    I love your videos. I'm doing the same to my Roland Acoustic kit. However, where do I find the material to make the choke? I'm not sure what the "tape" is called that you put on the rim of the cymbals all the way around? What is this called and where can I find it? My Ride that comes with the Roland kit has a three zone connection that is connected to the cymbal by a USB connection as opposed to the jacks that are typically found on the kits. Any suggestions for this once I start to replace the Ride? Again, thanks for the videos and the education. Keep drumm'n!

    Great DIY project. Can you please explain why you put the Myrk or goedrum membrane switch on the top of the cymbal and why it should be useless? Jobeky place they membrane switch under the cymbal. You have mentioned it in the hi-hat DIY and in your first ride attempt.
    Thank you very much and go on:-)

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  3 года назад

      Thanks! Do you own a jobeky cymbal? I’ve tried both myrk and goedrum membranes and as far as I know in my experience these membranes need to be hit directly to be activated/triggered (edge/rim sound). They are not like piezo triggers. Both myrk and goedrum specifically instructs to put it on top. Otherwise you’d have to have metal bending hits to trigger them if you put them under. 😅
      Altho for choke/mute purpose, it would work however you want to place it. Under/over, choke should work.
      So not sure about what jobeky is using. And how effective the underside membrane is.
      I tried it before, just a quick test. Did not install it. I was just curious too. yeah it doesnt work.

    Unfortunately my go edrum rubber rim breaks. I have the bell trigger as well. Really gotta pin point your strike. My ride uses the dual box. The single zone metal box doesn't hold the adhesive well for the piezo.

      @@ProjectBeats_ yeah I noticed your hack by taking out the foam pad and just taping the trigger on the bell. Definitely gotta try that my dude

  • @AdamRobertshaw
    @AdamRobertshaw 4 года назад

    Heads up dynamics are not part of the membrane, it's the piezo which works with the membrane. As you can see the disadvantage of piezo bell over membrane bell removes all subtle dynamics as you have to hit the cymbal enough to trigger it off. Plastic project boxes as we discussed before will always be an issue on a brass cymbal because of the warping of the brass cymbal when hit.

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  4 года назад +1

      Thanks! I realise. Trigger box with the piezo acts as the “main controller”.

    • @AdamRobertshaw
      @AdamRobertshaw 4 года назад

      @@ProjectBeats_ yup - all dynamics come from the piezo - have 2 subdivides the sensitivity across the cymbal (you'll notice Roland do not use piezos in their bells because of this). I think a lot of your comments and concerns with the Myrk- Membranes are being addressed in the new version coming out later this year - working out the cleanest way to chain membranes and connect things (especially for the bells - people find this hard to resolve), and making it easy for low volume conversion which seems to be what everyone is doing nowadays! :)

Aren't in a dangerous position beign right were we usually strike? How can i proved if i wann do the same thing with a regular cymbal (a non low volume one)? I have to keep wiring in the top and hide them under the padding, or place everything in the underside?

      Myrk percussion is in UK he has membrane. you might be able to get from him. That’s what I used for bell and edge in my first build. ruclips.net/video/UKfHCBNN2Kc/видео.html

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  3 года назад

      Haven’t tried regular cymbal. But I think I would go with covering the entire bottom with some type of foam, myrk edge membrane on top, myrk bell membran on top, drill holes so all wiring is on the bottom side. I’d still use u-rubber channel to hide the edge membrane and help with vibrations. Then trigger box under or if you know how to make one. You might be able to find diagram for the electronics.

    • @IllGib
      @IllGib 3 года назад

      @@ProjectBeats_ In the end the same as you did, but i have to add a couple of holes, minding to stay away fro the bell area or else the cymbal could fall apart :D I lost a couple of cyms dues cracked bell border in my years in drumming.
      Yes i can buy the myrk ones as they're in Uk, but GoEdrum doesn't ship here, i'll have to go with regular piezo instead of a trigger box.
      I asked if it's possible to use only piezo instead of switch 'cause i seen one diy were he used a piezo in the border area, but i guess he tinkered a lot in the module to reduce crosstalks.
      I seen some even using metal plates as switch, they solder a cable on the plate and the mass on the cymbal, it's a smart and even cheaper option if it actually work.

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  3 года назад

      Crosstalk between what?

    • @matenorth
      @matenorth 3 года назад

      @@ProjectBeats_ Between the bell and bow piezo. Since the inputs on my td-4 (haha) expect switch for the bell in order to get the true 3-zone function, i had to connect the bell as an independent single zone trigger. Unless goedrum has modified the circuit of their system to trick the module into thinking its receiving on/off messages from your bell piezo. You even mentioned in your previous ride conversion video that you would get crosstalk if you weren't using a switch.

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  3 года назад

      I see. If you try playing 3 zones on actual e-ride. When you play bell, you will naturally hear the bow, as bell would rely on bow to trigger (main trigger of 3 zone) especially for dynamics. I since learned main trigger is actually doing the dynamics so it has to be there when you play bell. It’s just more accurate and cleaner when using bell membrane. But if you are hearing bell when playing bow then there is a problem. This never happens to me tho. I adjusted the bell sensitivity higher for my setup since I’m using 2 piezo (1 bell 1 bow) which is not ideal but this setup is super convenient so I went with it. Piezo bell needs higher sensitivity. I’ve no problems with crosstalk tho.

    • @matenorth
      @matenorth 3 года назад

      Thanks for the reply. Both piezos of my ride are super sensitive even with maxed out threshhold and super low sensitivity. The guy that built it (gear drum) recommended a threshold of 30 for the bell but my module is not capable of such a high value. I think i'll try to physically dampen them. thanks
      PS I read somewhere on your channel that myrk will release some bell membranes that go under the bell surface. Is this true ? Or possible?

    • @ProjectBeats_
      @ProjectBeats_  3 года назад

      I don’t think they will ever build an underside membrane. It should be on top. Membranes work better that way. Piezo underside, membrane on top.
      I heard they will update the bell so that it’s easier to build. Kinda like a plug and play setup. W/o having to build it up. It’ll still be on top. But I have yet to see any update on their ebay shop. Also waiting on what they would release.
      If the bell is too sensitive and you are getting bell even when not hitting bell. Maybe try to add a thicker foam between cymbal and bell piezo.
