When I was a kid, I usec to beg my parents to leave on the Mega Drive (Genesis) overnight because saving didn't work. I tried the final boss over and over and over again and never made it. Then, many years later, I bought the game on my new Wii and beat the boss. It felt like I finally closed a long open chapter of my life. Thanks for this great playthrough.
1. That end boss was a Nightmare. 2. Should have just turned the tv off but left the mega drive running 3. I did this with another game then pretended to go to bed..completed it at 3am and accidentally shouted YES!! YEEESSSS...then moved like lightning to turn everything off and jump into bed. Before dad came into the room ..then has to pretend I'd had a bad dream 😂
What an absolute treasure of a game. The music alone is phenomenal, but the gameplay is fantastic and a classic adventure. There really is something special about it. And geez that final boss with the conveyor belt was insane for me to beat. Monster Boy & the Cursed Kingdom did a remarkable job living up to this as well. It really blew me away and I hope we get to see more of the same.
Yes, i loved the game back in the day (and still do), the final boss is a typical westernization result (making western releases harder), in the original Japanese version there was no conveyor belt.
I randomly picked out this game as a kid. Never read a review, or seen a commercial/ad on it. Just stumbled on a masterpiece imo. Greatest feeling in the world.
Same here, just randomly bought in a shop as while buying myself a turbo controller for my birthday. The pad was awful, the game was ace. Never buy a Turbo Touch 360...
i was born in 83' so i was 8 when this came out...my mom took me to toys r us and i picked this out based on the picture....and this adventure is forever stained in my memory...Absolutely loved this game! Thanks for the upload
Never played this back in the day cuz we couldn’t afford a Mega Drive but I played Dragons Trap on the Master System over n over. Was my favourite ms game after ghouls n ghosts. Watching your longplay makes me think I really need to get a copy of this game. It’s awesome. Thanks for uploading.
I fairly recently found out about the Wonder Boy games. I wasn't interested in them at first, but then I played one of the games and soon I played pretty much all of the main titles in the series. I played the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 version of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (also the remake), Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (on PC), arcade and SEGA Master System versions of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, SEGA Genesis version of Wonder Boy in Monster World and Monster World IV. By far, Dragon's Curse (Dragon's Trap) and Wonder Boy in Monster World are my favorites. These are such good games. I loved Monster Land as well, but it's just too difficult at times and I could only do one perfect run of it. Monster World IV plays a bit differently and the Monster Boy game was maybe a little too long (I felt like some of the levels just went on for far too long), but I still really enjoyed those games. But what I think sets Dragon's Trap and Wonder Boy in Monster World as the best games for me is the sheer replayability and simplicity of the former and the overall tight design and callbacks/references in the latter. I still remember reaching what was basically the last dungeon from the Monster Land game and feeling a little uneasy but also excited to see it again. And then I reached the spaceship level with that godly music, good god. Biomeka was insanely difficult (especially since I only found eight hearts during the course of the game, equivalent to the amount of health in the previous game, I suppose), but I felt really satisfied in the end. Exploration was also great, finding hidden doors actually rewarded me with good stuff and some of the later enemies dropped enough gold that buying up all the gear wasn't really a problem. I think the secrets were better in Dragon's Trap, but Wonder Boy in Monster World feels less cheap in that regard (at least I didn't see myself re-entering the same old secret rooms to essentially grind for gold faster lol). I can only hope this game gets remade after the Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap and Wonder Boy: Asha In Monster World remakes. I would love to see it modernized at least a bit, because this game truly does feel to me like an overlooked masterpiece begging to be made well known.

1:53:20 Some people including myself think that the Prince is Bock Lee Temjin (WB, WBIML and WB3DT). Notice how when you save the Prince, it makes that iconic transformation sound. Now the reason why Bock is no longer the Hero in this game is the Dragon's Curse was permanent despite returning to Hu-man form hence the Horn on his head and Green Hair preventing him from effectively wielding any Legendary Equipment but can live longer hence his height. Notice he is completely unarmed and simply rams into Biomeka's cannon much like Lizard Man jumping to break blocks. And of course the curse made it easier for Biomeka to transform him into a Dragon (again). Also in the Darkworld Village, there's a Woman with Green Hair who says "He's probably attempting to collect the legendary weapons. It looks as though he's got all but one of them". The reason he has Green Hair and Different Armour at the start of Dragon's Trap is Westone didn't see the point in giving him his classic Blonde Hair and Legendary Armour when you literally play as him for 2 minutes. Of course these are just theories which are just for fun. The green hair could simply be a theme much like with Monster Lair and Monster World 4. (EDIT) Okay so according to the Wonderboy fan wiki, The Prince of Dark World is the son of King from the original Wonder Boy. wonderboy.fandom.com/wiki/Prince_of_Dark_World#:~:text=The%20Prince%20of%20Dark%20World,was%20in%20the%20Nightmare%20Castle.
Interesting theory, thank you, it does all make sense, i wonder if it's made more clear in the JP version, seeing how translations can be incorrect or can mean something else due language/culture differences.
Personally, I think it's the Monster Lair protagonist, who has green hair. If the first boss, the princess (Player 2 in Monster Lair) and the final stage theme from that game return, why not him?
Wait, so first, you are inferring that the hero from Wonder Boy in Monster Land and its direct sequel Dragon's Trap is the same hero from the first Wonder Boy game? How could you ever think that when the first Wonder Boy was a prehistoric man whereas the second Wonder Boy was a medieval knight, even though both heroes had blond hair, the first two games have nothing in common, they don't even take place in the same era, there must be millions of years between them, and that is, if they actually are related at all, which is very unlikely. Sega used the same sound effects in Sonic the Hedgehog and in Ristar, did you come up with a theory that Ristar is Sonic from these iconic sound effects? 😏 Actually, Wonder Boy in Monster World is a remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, not a sequel, it is not the same world, not the same people, not the same continuity, the stories are independent of each other, they are unrelated, just like Wonder Boy in Monster Land is not a sequel to the first Wonder Boy, they have nothing in common, they are not related. However, Wonder Boy 3: Dragon's Trap is indeed a direct sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster Land since it starts right where the previous game ended. Also, Monster World 4 is a sequel to Wonder Boy in Monster World, even though they have not much in common, it still continues the story of Biomeka. Actually, did you not notice that Wonder Boy in Monster World follows the same plot as Wonder Boy in Monster Land, that in the end you discover that the leader of the monsters is actually an alien from outer-space, did you seriously think that another alien from outer-space would come to the same world right after the previous one by sheer coincidence, wasn't it obvious to you that it was actually a remake of the same plot and not a sequel? 🤨 The reason why the hero of Wonder Boy in Monster World is a new hero instead of being the same hero as Wonder Boy in Monster Land and its direct sequel Dragon's Trap is because it is not a sequel from the previous games, it is a remake, a hard-reset, they erased everything and restarted anew, simple as that. While you are right that the hero from Dragon's Trap had green hair, he had no horn on his head, nor in his human form nor in his dragon form, therefore your theory is actually based on nothing concrete since I was able to very easily refute all of your points. Do you actually see any ressemblance at all between the hero from Dragon's Trap and the dark prince from Wonder Boy in Monster World? I mean look at the dark prince right here in this video, he has spikes on his shoulder plates, he looks more like Julius from Sword of Mana than the hero from Dragon's Trap, did you ever see a Wonder Boy wearing a spiky armor like a bad guy? No, of course not, they always wear heroic armors, you won't see any spike on them like a bad guy's armor, please actually pay attention before you come up with baseless theories, will you? Mario jumps to break blocks too, did you ever see Mario ram into a cannon to destroy it? The dark prince in his dragon form has nothing to do with Dragon's Trap, you didn't even recognize the final boss from the first Wonder Boy game with his succession of heads one after the other, it is the demon king who kidnapped the girlfriend of the first wonder boy, it is a reference to the final boss from the first game, it has nothing to do with Dragon's Trap. Where did you see this green haired woman from the dark village said that the prince is collecting all legendary weapons and he has got all but one because I just watched this video in which the player talked to everybody and I saw no one say that, I only saw a woman in dark village said that she wonders where the prince has gone, he has probably gone to the nightmare castle, and this is all that was said about the prince, nothing else, moreover your claim doesn't even make sense because there is only ONE legendary weapon, there is also a legendary armor, a legendary shield and a pair of legendary boots, but there is only one legendary weapon so why would the prince try to "collect all legendary weapons", and moreover he didn't get ANY legendary equipment and therefore the "he collected all but one" part of your claim doesn't make sense either. A brand new Wonder Boy was released in 2018 and, once more, it is a remake unrelated to the previous games in the series, Monster World was remade anew once more, it takes all the best from the classic Wonder Boy video-games, especially Wonder Boy in Monster World which is the main base for this new remake including the transformations from Dragon's Trap and the pepelogoo from Monster World 4, and use it to make a completely new Wonder Boy video-game featuring a brand new hero (he looks like Shion but he is not Shion) in a brand new Monster World, the name is Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, it was released in 2018 for PS4, X-Box One, Switch and PC. 😉
@@pantheman2842 Yeah? Then tell me, was the protagonist from Monster Lair the prince of an icy village of dark people? Did he have a horn on his head? Did he wear a spiky armor? No? As I thought. 😏

L2Nuku yea I played when I was younger but could never find the one of the pygmy items in the ocean. When I got in college I beat the game but definitely didn't make it look this effortless.
@@Jburneyjr What do you mean "a Mass Effect type of system"? 🤔 And if this player made this game look so effortless is because they trained a lot and know it by heart, you can make any game look effortless when you played it enough to master it. 😉
Nice run dude! The first time I played this game was on the Master System. I got it for the PC Engine Duo as well. It's a great game no matter the platform and I really love the Genesis version. This game and Wonderboy in Monster Land on the Master System are probably two of my favorites. Wonderboy in Monster Land has FM sound on the Master System. I wished this game on the Master System had it too but it doesn't. Maybe some day someone will make a FM patch for it like they did with the Master System Sonic the Hedgehog. Alex Kidd in Miracle World could use that treatment as well.
Oh hey Gary, thanks, i played this a ton back in the day, i kinda surprised myself that i still knew to find everything lol, and i agree with you, though the SMS port could've been better, it feels rushed, if they sat down and took time for the port it could've been like WB3 in terms of quality. I still need to finish WB3 (The Dragons Trap) on SMS some day, that's a great game aswell. I'm probably going to do a playthrough of Monster World 4 as well (unofficially named Wonder Boy 6), i used to beta test the first translation patch for it (1999/2000 or so?)
I remember the last boss, couldn't change the game to get another one unless i finished it...rewatching it, i undersstand that i probably didn't have a good use of magic (had none set)...even though you have some magic, it still seems like it's a challenge. I'd beat the game easy today though. Very nice game.
@@derekwhite4312 Hey you're welcome. Yeah you would think 1 more heart fits in, but if you try to get 1 extra from the secret shop, the store owner will say that you're maxed, even if you buy that heart first, then getting another from a chest will do nothing.
@L2Nuku thank you! Randomly remembered this game last night somehow from when i was prob 4 or 5 LOL thought it was a fever dream and memories came flooding back as i watched. Including that young me never knew how to get that damn chest lmao😂 so thank you! Awesome video!
I like this one better than a certain other guy's uploading of the same game. The other one never collected more than 5 hearts' worth of maximum health, and seemed to be hung up on rushing through as fast as possible.
I just got this on the mini system. Can someone please tell me how far u have to go before u can save ure progress i killed first boss but game won't save keeps starting from near beginning at the inn when I get killed by the bats and red bouncy ball things.
It's its own thing, it's the 5th game in the series. It does have a few throwbacks here and there, for example the start is just like Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
i believe the demo that plays after the titlescreen shows you one, certain places/deathends look very suspicious as well, and i always loved to explore for secrets in games :)
1:35:28 What? I thought the little empty patch in the vines was an hidden little door, what was the point of making this little empty patch in the vines if the door was actually in the middle of the vines? 😕
1:46:27 Nooooo, what are you doing?! The princess is eagerly awaiting your return at the surface and you just use your return magic to ditch her and go to the granny at the inn instead, do you want Shion to end up a virgin boy?! 🤣
1:47:46 Look, you walk right past her and you don't even talk to her, you bluntly ignore her even though she is waiting for you! I mean, if you are more into the granny at the inn, that's your preference, but still... 😅
1:53:57 Damn! How much I hate this boss! It made me hate the entire game because it is unfairly difficult, it feels as if the developers wanted to punish you for playing their game, I hate this boss so much! 🤬 I read that Wonder Boy in Monster World was released in America before it was released in Japan and that american players hated the final boss so much that the developers made it easier for the japanese release, this is one of the rare games whose japanese version is easier than western version. And when I think that in the sequel, Monster World 4, this alien biomechanical final boss has been turned into the leader of a religious cult... 😓 I mean, I remember how mind-blown I was the first time I played Wonder Boy in Monster World and I discovered that the mastermind behind everything was an alien from outer-space! And then I played the sequel, Monster World 4, and I was surprised how much everything was different, Monster World was turned into an arabian nights setting, Shion was replaced by an unknown girl, and Biomeka had become the leader of a religious cult, I mean, I remember that I had some fun playing the game but it was not enough to motivate me to finish it, I really couldn't get myself into such a radical change of setting, I didn't recognize anything from Monster World, everything was too different for me to appreciate it even though it was kinda interesting, I didn't feel in Monster World anymore and I quit. I still would like to watch you play the sequel since I watched you play Wonder Boy in Monster World, are you going to play Monster World 4? 🙂
Played and beat this game when I was a kid. Was endlessly frustrated by these chests and areas with no obvious way to reach them. Looking at all these damned invisible doors and feeling cheated lol. How the hell was I supposed to know about that or figure it out?
i believe the demo that plays after the titlescreen shows you one secret door, certain places/deathends look very suspicious as well, and i always loved to explore for secrets in such games for more.

Ever since I played this, I've only wanted to live in Childam.
Treasure chest at about 4 minutes in..... I remember you needed to get it by going underwater I'm just struggling to figure it outI
0:32:32 to 0:33:10 shows you how to get it, you will need the Trident first (obtained after 2nd boss, when talking to the village elder)
@@L2Nuku much appreciated.... I knew I was forgetting something 👍👍
Bought this game probably 1995ish at phar mor for $5 bucks. It was a used rental. Back then we didn't have the internet, you didn't even know what most of these games were going to be like besides looking at the box
Wow, that's a steal for that time, hope the box and manual weren't too beat up ^^
This brings back so many memories. My brother and I used to watch my dad play this game.
Nice :) Did you ever play it yourself?
L2Nuku yea I played when I was younger but could never find the one of the pygmy items in the ocean. When I got in college I beat the game but definitely didn't make it look this effortless.
hehe, yea i may have played it a bit too much in the past xD
L2Nuku haha well keep it up. I usually don't play one player games too much after beating them unless they have a Mass Effect type of system.
@@Jburneyjr What do you mean "a Mass Effect type of system"? 🤔
And if this player made this game look so effortless is because they trained a lot and know it by heart, you can make any game look effortless when you played it enough to master it.
Hey thanks for the guide. Really seems like there should be one more heart container
@@derekwhite4312 Hey you're welcome.
Yeah you would think 1 more heart fits in, but if you try to get 1 extra from the secret shop, the store owner will say that you're maxed, even if you buy that heart first, then getting another from a chest will do nothing.
Thank you finally i know how to get the middle ocean chest :D
hey, you're welcome! :D
How do you get the chest at 4:08?
@@Bb186fo 0:32:32 to 0:33:10 shows you how to get it, you will need the Trident first (obtained after 2nd boss, when talking to the village elder)
@L2Nuku thank you! Randomly remembered this game last night somehow from when i was prob 4 or 5 LOL thought it was a fever dream and memories came flooding back as i watched. Including that young me never knew how to get that damn chest lmao😂 so thank you! Awesome video!
@@Bb186fo awesome and thanks ^^
Wonder boy 3 is the best one of all 3. Playing this game since 89. Awesome game
that next one to my line up
I like this one better than a certain other guy's uploading of the same game. The other one never collected more than 5 hearts' worth of maximum health, and seemed to be hung up on rushing through as fast as possible.
Oh, were they speedrunning by any chance? If not than yeah that doesn't seem a good idea to make such a rushed video ^^
I wanted to see what the dragon village inn keeper looked like.
Nice video this game was tricky so I followed along
Glad it helped ^^
I just got this on the mini system. Can someone please tell me how far u have to go before u can save ure progress i killed first boss but game won't save keeps starting from near beginning at the inn when I get killed by the bats and red bouncy ball things.
The game saves every time you sleep at an inn :)
@@L2Nuku oh rite but do u have to start back at the last Inn u slept in because that's very far back
@@martymartin2894 normally yes, but since you play on the mini system you can also make save points in the mini menu
@@L2Nuku I tried that and it saved on a save point but then I couldn't select the square with the save point
@@martymartin2894 ok, not sure what that is about, but yea those are the only 2 ways to save
So is this a remake of Wonder Boy in Monster Land, or is it its own thing?
It's its own thing, it's the 5th game in the series.
It does have a few throwbacks here and there, for example the start is just like Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
1:37:50 and 1:48:40 Best music in the game right here
That's from Wonderboy 3, Dragon's trap. It might've appeared in the older, arcade versions.
@@Koquanne It sure did! Even the other version "Dragon's Curse" from the Turbografx 16
How are you supposed to know about all of those invisibles doors underwater?
i believe the demo that plays after the titlescreen shows you one, certain places/deathends look very suspicious as well, and i always loved to explore for secrets in games :)
FUN FACT:THIS WAS SHION LAST APPAREANCE
1:21:39 Damn! So far this little dragon is the only companion who actually was helpful against monsters!
1:35:28 What? I thought the little empty patch in the vines was an hidden little door, what was the point of making this little empty patch in the vines if the door was actually in the middle of the vines? 😕
1:45:17 Wow, you are being beaten badly and when I think it is not even the actual final boss... 😅
I read that Wonder Boy in Monster World was released in America before it was released in Japan and that american players hated the final boss so much that the developers made it easier for the japanese release, this is one of the rare games whose japanese version is easier than western version.
And when I think that in the sequel, Monster World 4, this alien biomechanical final boss has been turned into the leader of a religious cult... 😓
I mean, I remember how mind-blown I was the first time I played Wonder Boy in Monster World and I discovered that the mastermind behind everything was an alien from outer-space!
Bellissimo amo Wonder boy👍metto like al tuo canale te lo meriti😉
Thanks :D
Can't believe I beat this when I was a kid...
We had a lot more time and patience as a kid ^^
Where do I find thunder magic in this?
On these places: 0:37:14 - 0:54:51 - 1:46:59 i think that's all of them.
I found it
Didn’t make sense after you beat the #Spnix to get granted the the power but never available
@@Grayman831 yeah, I think it's a bug
EVEN BETTER! Just found a chest that gave me each of the powers!!!!!!
Where do you get the Pygmy Sword?
here you go: 36:42 - 37:08
Brilliant, thank you. I am now a new subscriber :-)
@@JutmanCustoms yw and hey thanks ^^
My favorite game as a child and maybe still today. The ONLY thing I don't like is the anticlimactic and abrupt ending.
@@lost50 I think it aged really well, except for the final boss difficulty in the western releases.
how do you play ocarina?
46:46
Played and beat this game when I was a kid. Was endlessly frustrated by these chests and areas with no obvious way to reach them. Looking at all these damned invisible doors and feeling cheated lol. How the hell was I supposed to know about that or figure it out?
i believe the demo that plays after the titlescreen shows you one secret door, certain places/deathends look very suspicious as well, and i always loved to explore for secrets in such games for more.
14:41 "The Princess is open, why don't you go inside?" 🤣
Hmm yes lore of wonder boy series momentum 100
Hi. I suscribe your channel. like
Hi, thanks, glad you liked it ^^b
19:27 ... nice
I see what you did there ;D
um correct me if i m wrong but this video says 100% so why are you not getting ALL WEAPONS that is part of 100% just saying
It's kinda divided what a 100% playthrough means, but in this case it's about completing the game with all secrets found.
Not me screaming internally for you to sleep at the inn after beating 2nd boss 😂😂
And then you troll me by skipping the inn in Dwarf Town and sleeping in Castle Town lmao
no 60 fps...
Yea, this game runs at 30fps, my fault, i copied the title from another upload and only change the title, fixed now ^^
EDIT: not the case, was 60fps before, checking what the problem is
i looked into it again, and yup the original file was 60fps, it was 60fps on youtube aswell but for some reason it changed to 30fps, i'm going to see if i can restore it back to 60fps
fixed
You didn't finish the game..
Funny.., what makes you say that?
@@L2Nuku after killing the final Boss you can fight again vs all the Boss, in the space. You didn't know?

It can be annoying in the Ice palace yea, but other than that i personally didn't have much problems with them
