Such a treat to see Matt Atkinson demonstrate the loading and firing of the gun at the end. I've watched countless times his battle walks at Gettysburg. Never fails to bring the atmosphere of fun with presentation.
I am absolutely powerless to not watch a video with Matt Atkinson. The man is a living legend. The great men who fought on the fields of Gettysburg are not the only mighty Americans who make that place what it is. It takes people like ranger Atkinson who captivate minds through history and story to continue passing these important battles to our future generations.
Ranger Matt! I love hearing him speak. He is wonderful at taking the history and telling it like a story that allows your imagination to carry you back in time. Thank you for the artillery lesson. Great perspective on how hard those artillerists worked and the risks they took.
Gary thank you for having Matt on the channel Matt is a true asset to Gettysburg and and the park service . Gary thank you sir for packing the energy you bring to fields of honor. Gary do you have plans to cover the medical cores of both armies ? The aftermath of battle may seized for both armies but the medical and surgical Cores I could not even imagine how tired they were. Thank everyone behind the scenes in camera that bring these videos to us that cannot be there. Which we could get Matt’s Email address
We have offered numerous videos over the years on medical subjects. Just search our RUclips channel. We cannot give out mats contact information but you might be able to reach him through the national Park service at Gettysburg.
Awesome. And such an appropriate comment by Gary at the end. 49:14 “History, and Democracy, is not perpetuated by osmosis. It is by us telling younger generations about our country and about our culture.”
Great to see and hear Matt with his warm accent. Must think of Chamberlain and his command on the end of the line. Latimer too. What a brave man and most skilled and dedicated. You knew you would be a target for the opposing artillery and those jagged pieces of metal could be lethal. One accounted for the arm of John Bell Hood. The greatest battle in England, during one of their civil wars at Towton (29th. March 1461) is called the "English Gettysburg" has the remains of two hand-cannons, which like the Parrots, had exploded. Wonderful to see the knowledge and care taken by the Battlefield Trust, the Park Rangers and the Gettysburg Foundation.
Binge watching these presentations cos of Gary's passion, and now a video with Matt Atkinson. Great stuff, LOVE Matt's passion, enthusiasm and knowledge. Awesome fellas.
Ranger Matt takes you around the barn, and what is found there, is total clarity about the fight he’s recreating! You might think it’s confusing HOWEVER, once he turns your light bulb on, you see the path back to dig deeper because he births a profound desire to learn more! A true credit to his profession and his passion! 👍🏻
Top notch stuff, getting to see GNPS staff, ABT, History Underground, Emerging Civil war and Adams county Historical Society all working together is like a History Super heros extravaganza !
Excellent presentation! Thank you! And that guy called Matt did a pretty good job as well😂😂. Really looking forward to the rest of your programs today!
Hello from England,I have over thirty books on the American CivilWar. Thank you for all your work and dedication, so very very interesting. Wishing you all the very best!
My neck is feeling a little sore from shifting from Garry to Matt - I think I have a little whiplash from the change in pace! THANKS to you all for this series of videos - still fun watching these a year later.
Great video, especially seeing the artillery implements up close. Seeing Matt is always a pleasure. He's a superstar as is everyone else who work to preserve our nation's history.
mi 62 years old live in new jersey its been a dream of mine to go to gettysburg just cant to ever get to go thank you for these vidios been watching them all week end
My Gettysburg dream team! So glad I found this video. Mr. Adelman, White, and Atkinson all in one go! Thank you for making these videos for us all. Being immune compromised from a battle with cancer, and having never been to Gettysburg, I’m glad I get these tours from my home in California. Thank you . Col. Doug Douds, first time seeing you on Gettysburg, and will be sure to check out more! Thank you for your contribution and service to these brave soldiers who lived and fell there.
Wish I could watched this live!! Matt is one of my favorites of all the NPS Rangers! Great speaker, and makes it fun, interesting and informative for viewers of all levels of knowledge. As usual the rest of the 'the crew' is great! Keep up the good work, and thank you!
Just super cool to see this! It reminds me of the ‘60s-70s when characters from one sitcom would appear on another. Like Laverne and Shirley showing up on Happy Days! ;-). Seriously, great to see Matt unexpectedly. Thanks to all for keeping history alive.
What I like most about your series on Gettysburg is the enthusiasm and passion you all bring to the table in the telling of this great American tragedy. I’ve been to Gettysburg 3 times now, and there will be a forth soon.
Finally Gary Adelman and Mr Matt Atkinson have teamed up, I feel like this is when Apollo creed and Rocky lock hands in a team effort! I know Mr Atkinson from the RUclipsr Stuffwriter.
I was in Gettysburg last week and just recently had the chance to play catch up with the 158th videos. Another excellent job from the history gurus in Gettysburg. Thanks all!
Just the other day I found myself wondering if Gary and Matt had ever met each other and boom, I run across this. A full day at Gettysburg with these two fellas would be a dream come true.
Nothing like seeing Matt a good old Mississippi boy, although, he may be having a tough day because the school in Statkvegas has a National 🏆 Champ....
Nice to hear about the "Rock Creek Mill Pond ... and over looking that is "Powers' Hill" ... and within range of Benners' Hill was the artillery on Powers Hill ... thank you Ranger Troy for that Battle field walk ....
I have fired cannons, a few 12lbers in real life. Took down a tree in Kentucky with it. I did all 5 positions on my own, it's alot of work. I shot 3 rounds and was pretty wore out lol.
"This is live television," he says. This couldn't have been any better had it been otherwise! Each one of these videos are better than the one before. Excellent!
I'm glad the ABT has stepped up with these videos for the 158th anniversary. Because there are a lot of buffs in town that are very vocal about their disappointment in the lack of NPS battle walks this year. A lot of us have used these battle walks to see old friends we came to know at such events.
The discussion about the loss of hearing was interesting. I have a friend who was in charge of an artillery gun in Viet Nam 100 years after Gettysburg. He is 80 years old and has constant ringing in his ears.
Please do one of these on the East Cavalry Field. My ancestors fought there on that day (9th Va Cavalry) but so little has been written or said about it. Please!
This was very interesting to me since I was a cannoneer in Vietnam almost a 100 years after the battle of Gettysburg. Artillery shells didn’t change much in 100 years. Their main purpose was still the same, explode into small pieces and take out the enemy. I carry shrapnel in my chest to this day. I still remember how red hot the shrapnel was when it hit me
Very interesting learning about the differences of how both sides used their artillery. (Sadly, the Union had better and more artillery.) Hopefully, discussions on this important topic will be explored further . Thank you.
I believe the site has two Whitworth pieces with hexagonal barrels and which belonged to the Confederates, which had longer barrels, longer range and extreme accuracy.
That was interesting, but I was actually referencing the clash before the actual battle. According to his records my mom had and family lore, the 6th was escorting a supply train to the Union troops in Gettysburg when attacked by Confederate cavalry in or around Fairfield.
I am interested in knowing more about what happens to those thousands of federal who are captured. What are the logistics, where are they taken, what does it take to guard, feed and care for them. When are they transferred South? Is it during the battle or during the retreat. If during the retreat where do they place them in the March?
I am not sure what the logistics on the POW's were, but I think what was left of Pickett's division were initially assigned to guard them on the march south.
Excellent question. From what I have heard, neither side had given much, if any, thought into providing for prisoners at the start of the war. No one thought it would last so long. Just a few months maybe. It looks like they learned along the way (in some cases poorly) and did the minimum required.
6:55 This next part says it all, the fact that the Union was Established In a tight grouping on interior lines only 3 miles long while confederates were spread out On exterior lines totaling 6 miles long with a town in the way
Such a treat to see Matt Atkinson demonstrate the loading and firing of the gun at the end. I've watched countless times his battle walks at Gettysburg. Never fails to bring the atmosphere of fun with presentation.
Thanks for having Matt Atkinson and his descriptive, enjoyable expertise!
@ Jacob Masters - Ditto!

Great history of the young Major! His portrait shows him sans a left arm.
Very interesting, greetings from Australia.
The discussion about the loss of hearing was interesting. I have a friend who was in charge of an artillery gun in Viet Nam 100 years after Gettysburg. He is 80 years old and has constant ringing in his ears.
Very informative and well done! I've done a few videos about some less known aspects concerning the Civil War in Knoxville, TN.
Thanks!
More detail here than in any written book plus one is on the terrain. Great job - you guys are american treasures - Hoora to the Col.
Please do one of these on the East Cavalry Field. My ancestors fought there on that day (9th Va Cavalry) but so little has been written or said about it. Please!

General John Buford was a distant relative and was from Ky. Most of my ancestors came from Europe in 1630 to Va and then down to TN.

Matt, what powder bag?? Kinda forgot to put the powder in, just saying . I know you were having pressure for just two minutes 😃
I would like to see a video on the 6th US Cavalry at Fairfield before the battle. My gggrandfather was wounded there.
We covered Fairfield this year! Just see the Gettysburg 158 playlist.
Thanks. I just joined and am getting used to the channel.
That was interesting, but I was actually referencing the clash before the actual battle. According to his records my mom had and family lore, the 6th was escorting a supply train to the Union troops in Gettysburg when attacked by Confederate cavalry in or around Fairfield.
Gettysburg 159 I'd like to see July 1-3 all civilian of the battle.
