  • The term "Devil's Den" elicits a variety of unpleasant images. On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, this jumble of boulders in South Central Pennsylvania played host to one of the fiercest struggles of the American Civil War. Join American Battlefield Trust Chief Historian Garry Adelman as he explores the story of the battle, the boulder-strewn landscape, and why this area became known as Devil's Den.
    This video is part of our battlefield tour series commemorating the 158th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. You can view the entirety of the playlist here: • 158th Anniversary of G...

    As a Canadian I didn't have any interest in the civil war period. One visit to Gettysburg on a motorcycle trip and this place got under my skin.What an amazing town. You can really feel the history there. I have been a civil war buff ever since I rode through this area and walked through the Devils den area .I highly recommend traveling to this area but look into it before you go, there are multiple ways to see the battlefields.

    People say they don’t want the Confederate statues in their cities. I couldn’t see them having a problem of those statues included on the battlefields where Southern men fought and died. Please consider all those statues placed on the battlefields for people to see our American history.

    • @MrChewbone69
      @MrChewbone69 2 года назад +1

      I have always said that although historically significant, absolutely NO US Civil War military statues belong on display on village squares or greens or traffic roundabouts...its just not proper, regardless of what side they are from...That said..I believe that any removed "Confederate" statues be displayed prominantly on the actual NPS military park service historic battlefields for everyone and anyone who wants to enjoy them.

    Took my (8) yr. old Niece up there to DEVIL's DEN with a WONDERFUL!!!!!! Gettysburg Tour Guide. She looked around and walked around a bit, looked at the TOUR GUIDE and said to him:
    "Why would they come up here? This was a SUICIDE MISSION!!!". The Tour Guide tried to explain their reasoning and she repeated her words.
    No, she was only (8) yrs. old at the time with NO FORMAL MILITARY TRAINING!!!! The Tour Guide turned to me, and said "WOW! This Little girl is very, very intelligent! The troops could have used her then...."

    So that we can get as close a feel as possible, to attempt to see it as clearly as possible.
