This. Also, this is exactly the way I'd recommend practicing sub strafing: when you do an egg throw or drop an egg into the basket, you effectively are able to "sub strafe" out of that, that is, when you complete that action, you are able to immediately start moving at full speed in any direction. Sub strafe when you're picking up eggs so that both sides are symmetrical, and you'll soon get the hang of it. It's how I practiced how to sub strafe. I also have a handcam sub strafing video on my channel, if anyone's interested in that.
Substrafing was one of those things i figured would take too much effort to bother learning something that could only help situationally. but this video actually explained how and why in a much better way, thanks for this
Wow! I'd never even heard of sub-strafing before, but you made this so easy to understand that I already completely get it! I'll definitely be trying this, as I'm struggling in S and this could be the edge I need. Thank you!
Another variant that I still don’t have myself - ledge cancelling. Sub strafing right at the top of a ledge allows you to transition smoothly from the wall to the ground above. I still don’t have it down perfectly, but it saves so much time. Also, Salmon Run is a great way to practice.
I don't really bother with doing this much in splatoon 3 now because they made it much smoother than in splatoon 2, but it definitely can be good if you get the timing down
Question for you chase do you have your dodge roll mapped to something other than the b button? Cause I find it hard to use dodge roll while aiming. So I changed it to my left bumper
As a new Splatoon player, I've ignored sub-strafing for quite some time now just because it's so annoyingly hard to get used to. Seeing your video just became the needed wake up call I needed. I'll probably practice this in salmom run since that's where I practiced squid rolling (which is quite a pain to get used to as well ngl ;-;)
I find that squid rolling and sub strafing works best when collecting eggs near the basket anyways, so I'd definitely recommend doing it there. Also, it might be good to know when to sub strafe vs. squid roll when it comes to collecting eggs too. When you're too close to the basket, a squid roll is too far and the lag makes it slower than sub strafing. You could still use it to avoid chip damage like flyfish or stingers, but often it's better to just substrafe.
Very happy you made this video. I've been wanting to apply sub strafing for forever, but can never do it in the heat of the moment in ranked, only in salmon run and speedruns 🤣
Another cool thing that can be tricky to learn but is super cool to pull off is sub-strafing into a squid roll. It allows you to do cool tricks like squid rolling forwards and also allows you to do it in situations where you don’t get the chance to build momentum.
i hope more people learn what sub strafing is. mixing both the roll and strafing is great to confuse opponents and have the best movement the game offers.
I had never heard of this technique before, and I've been playing Splatoon since the first game! 🤯 I've experienced it being used against me countless times, however, but I didn't understand what was happening until now and had always just assumed that my opponents rapidly popping in and out of their ink while switching direction at seemingly impossible speed like that was just something to do with my internet lagging. LOL. I'm going to try and learn this technique myself now that I know about its existence.
"For some reason shooters are able to dip in and out of the ink two frames faster than the rest of the weapon classes" This was a specific buff to shooters to counter dualies back in Splatoon 2, back when dualies were dominant. Not sure why they decided that was necessary, but it's nice to know the context. It also made shooters a lot more nimble and fast-paced than in Splatoon 1. The Splattershot Jr. feels so much slower in that game coming back from Splatoon 2/3.
i actually learned how to substrafe playing explosher in 2 after watching Brian do the same thing. i threw so many point sensors on accident 💀 learning on explo was easy because of how slow it makes you, it forces you to learn quicker movement to save time
I got used to sub-strafing while playing a lot of Salmon Run in Splatoon 2. not only does it boost your survivability, but collecting eggs becomes much more effective. For example, if there's a bunch of eggs 3 meters from basket, you can deposit them much faster if you use the technique rather than slowly and clumsily swim from side to side.
I've never tried to do this much because i could never find anyone explaining when to actually use it but also i do largely use shooters so main strafing was easier to muscle memory as i was learning the game. I think i'll try the same thing of drilling it into my head though since it's the main movement technique that i don't have much grasp of and it always gets mentioned
At the begining it was a litle hard to force my brain to do it all the time but what helped me was doing these in salmon run since you are not fighting other players you can try it to avoid salmonoids
btw when you are squid rolling, your landing position and trails are almost locked, makes it extremely predictable. squid roll is also much slower than substrafing. Not to mention that you can't do a *little* stall/stop/reset momentum (to possibly jump over a ledge)/fast multiple turns with squid roll. That's why i don't nearly consider squid roll as an essencial skill or good in 1v1 scenarios
BRUH. This could've saved me from so many deaths when I wasn't fast enough to do a squid roll to avoid a splat bomb. Thanks for info. And shooter privilege wins again 😭
Im curious about the utility of sub strafing with charge hold weapons. I play Nautilus, so I'll charge a bit and dip back to hold enough charge to fight back in in many of the cases you showed, so I can't really dodge around strafing without losing my ability to fire back. In what situations would sub strafing be useful for me?
sub strafing is one of those things I know how to do but have a hard time executing bc it’s not intuitive or fun for me to do. with enough practice I might get used to it but it’s still a pain for me atm. it’s something I struggle with bc I want to get better at this game
i got a question that i hope you'll answer. as a dualie player that's never learnt how to sub-strafe. should i learn how to main-strafe, sub-strafe. or both? (mainly use tetras, squelchers idk if thats helpful but ima say it anyway)
I confused on the commands. Do you sub>swim>release sub or hold sub? Holding sub ties up my trigger finger from shooting while releasing throws a bomb if I mistime my button presses. I'm curious if pros use multiple fingers on triggers or they never misinput
with me, i swim>sub> swim again, while still holding sub. only let go of sub once youre already submerged in the ink. then when swimming, thats when you shift your finger from R to ZR. That's how I do it anyway
Sub strafing seems like one of those things that are way too annoying and take too long to learn for basically no reward and the reasons to learn in it this video don't really do much to say otherwise ngl
If you wanna stay at a low level then you're right! All top players sub strafe, so if you want to actually get better then I'd learn it. It's really not hard to learn, you're just pressing a couple buttons
I know this tech for years, but never used it in a fight, mainly because I use backline weapons like Charger and Splatling and with them preparing my shots. But I start using it more in Salmon Run (mostly for fun) and last time in Clam Blitz as I used the Rapid Blaster, I had use sub-strafing if I not got killed before. 😆 It happened, because I try to mix-up my opponent (shoot, dive in ink, move & repeat). In the middle of a fight my finger goes to the R trigger, because I wanted to retreat. In that moment I know the Salmon Run experience shine through.
Two important uses for sub-strafing that I didn't mention:
- Picking up clams in Clam Blitz
- Picking up eggs in Salmon Run
Not mentioned but, sub-strafing is a game-changer for Salmon Run. You can deliver eggs so much faster and U-turn away from sudden dangerous enemies.
This. Also, this is exactly the way I'd recommend practicing sub strafing: when you do an egg throw or drop an egg into the basket, you effectively are able to "sub strafe" out of that, that is, when you complete that action, you are able to immediately start moving at full speed in any direction.

Fun fact: Ultra Stamp throw mode can "sub" strafe aswell. Just like how you normally substrafe, you can do it with Ultra Stamp
special strafe lol
@@snowballtheanvil we have Main Strafe, Sub strafe and now Special Strafe lol
You can also do this with ink storm, wave breaker, tacticooler,
Why don't we call it stampstrafing then?

can't you also ledge cancel by going out of and in swim form as you reach the top? is there a difference?

This is very useful for me since I use the octobrush and tri slosher and they can’t mainstrafe like shooters thx!
Very good video Chase!
As a dualie main, sub strafing is legit 90% of our movement
dang this video looks hella smooth

Sort of accidentally learned this in Salmon Run, and it's become incredibly useful! Thanks for the extra tips!

No, I just move my finger to the sub button when I want to strafe
i struggled with implementing substrafing in S2, switched to S3 and now i substrafe like wayy too much XD is that a good or bad thing idk
Armor noise just means you take LESS damage not NO damage right?
