    Awesome engines ! First boat I ever owned was a 1985 Ski Nautique 2001 with a 351W. Engine was all original with over 3k hours. Ran like a champ. Out pulled my buddies malibu skier with a chevy 350 all day long. 351W is a torquey beast. Very cool engine, the PCM marine engines are reverse rotation or RH rotation. Awesome job !

    A most excellent series that obviously took a lot of time to produce. Impressive attention to detail on the 're-fresh' (changing just the wear parts, not sure it's really a re-build). It's a shame there are so few views on your high quality video series. Thank You for making it.

    The 351W was a very good small block truck engine. Beefy bottom end, thick head castings, nodular iron cranks. 350 Chevy engines of the same time period had gotten so thin in their castings that heads and blocks cracking were common.

      @@JacobVillemain Great Re-build project, thanks for posting. I actually have the same engine and was on the brink of trading it off and going retro outboard. After watching this I am more prone to doing a rebuild. That said can you elaborate on what would be a ball park number for a build like what you did on this one? csherrer1@gmail.com Thanks.

    I would have dressed the oil filter, oil gallery, blue printed oil pump, and main(s) holes. Dress the crank holes and taper crank counter weights.
    Do they port the heads? I know they use a very conservative cam spec.

    I don't know jack squat about building engines, but I found this series incredibly educational and easy to follow. Out of curiosity, what would be the ballpark cost to a consumer to have you rebuild a marine engine? I realize that this was a pretty clean motor and most parts were still in good shape.

    Nicely done. I have somewhat inherited a boat with the same motor in it. Signs indicate water has made it's way into the oil, and it's become clear i'll need to pull it and rebuild if it's ever going to function again. How much time do you think you put into the rebuild? I sure would like to have some of the equipment you've got in your shop, great set-up.

I'm no expert so curious as to what you think would help wake up this motor a little. I have the factory High output which only put down 285hp and want to get into the mid 300s

    • @errbodyknowsdarules
      @errbodyknowsdarules 4 года назад

      Assuming your engine is reverse rotation? You'll be limited on available blanks for anything greater than .460 lift and 212 duration on a flat tappet cam. Does the HO come with GT40 heads? If you're LH rotation, I'd skip the P head swap, include intake and aluminum heads with a hydro roller cam.

    Awesome video from start to finish. I have a 97 ski Nautique with 351 GT40 engine, and I need to do the same thing. This was very helpful. Something I was wondering, are all the parts readily available (rings, bearings, possibly pistons)? and are they available for the GT40 engine as well? I have found some things for the GT40 engine are hard to find. Thanks.

    Really impressive work. Thanks very much for the video. I'm curious. I have a 351 in my newly purchased 1978 F150. Out of the factory, I think these engines were rated at a little less than 200 horsepower. Assuming you're no longer constricted by smog controls, what kind of power power can you get to and still have a smooth idling/performing engine. Can it get to around 350 horsepower?

    • @JacobVillemain
      @JacobVillemain  4 года назад +2

      I use the I-C-E method when adjusting valves.
      When the Intake Closes, set Exhaust. Then use the inverse to set the intake; when the Exhaust Opens, set Intake.
      Balancer position does not matter using this method.

When the motor is running the crank turns clockwise so i'm guessing it needs a regular cam and not the backwards cam. thanks!
