Apple Vision Pro 48 Hours Later: An AR/VR Newbie's Perspective

  • The Vision Pro feels lighter than I expected and the materials feel good to touch. The solo knit feels premium and the dual strap feels like the nylon apple watch bands. The front glass of the vision pro is super reflective and the light seal and light seal cushion both attach to the Vision Pro magnetically. When you pick up the headset, I’d pick it up by the strap, or the metal body, not by the light seal or cushion because it will detach and potentially damage your vision pro. So just keep that in mind. Overall, the entire product feels premium.
    Okay, so when you first put it on, you do this exercise where it wants to scan your hands and have you stare at different dots on the screen to calibrate the vision Pro to you. Afterwards you setup a persona. And I took like 3-4 tries before I got a persona that I was satisfied with. It does look and act like me.
    Okay, once setup was complete, I thought it was crazy how the UI was, all the VisionOS elements are super sharp, and you can really see the depth of objects, and their proximity to you. It’s cliche to say this, but this is something you have to see to believe. The video passthrough though, the “reality” you see in the vision pro, are obviously cameras. It looks like if you strapped an iphone camera directly to your face. The video passthrough is so soft and noisy in low light, you can tell it’s a video feed. But during the day, or in a brightly lit apple store, it looks closer to reality but the cameras still can’t replicate all the light and colors your eyes see and the dynamic range is obviously a camera feed.
    The Vision Pro can play 3D movies with some services like Disney+ and Apple TV supporting it, and watching 3D movies actually feels as immersive as what you used to see in theaters. Way better than the 3d implementations that was on 3D TVs back in the day. But I also enjoyed watching regular 2-d content on it. You can resize the window to be as big or as small as you want and drag the window wherever you go. It’s really cool. And you can drag 2 different windows by pinching different ones with each hand. Apple has built in immersive mode, which changes your entire view into an amazing backdrop of nature including some national parks and the moon. And visually, it feels like you’re in that environment.
    You can pair the Vision Pro with your mac. And when you do that, the screen on the mac goes blank but it’s visible in your Vision Pro. But you’re only able to mirror one MacBook display with no multi-display support. So you can’t run a bunch of desktop apps at once with “virtual monitors” but you can use Vision OS apps alongside your mirrored mac display. The mirrored display feels like it was always in vision pro the entire time. Seamless. You can continue to type with the Mac keyboard, or through Vision Pro. The apps do stay where they are. So if you leave the room, they stay in the room you were in. When you stand up, the objects in front of you turn transparent, so you can easily see the items around you. But currently, as is, the app ecosystem of the Vision pro isn’t extremely robust with productivity Apps. It has microsoft office products, but no google docs, sheets, slides, or even RUclips. This is definitely something I’ll have to check on again in the near future.
    On day 1, not gonna lie, I struggled. I was so used to doing things a certain way with how I interact with my computer, my phone, or a tablet. That learning to use a computer in a 3d space was completely different. Typing is annoying on the vision Pro. You have 4 options to type. Use voice to text. Use your eyes to select each letter, or move the keyboard UI close enough to you that you can “press” the key. But it’s strange, because you don’t feel a physical touch. And lastly, you can just connect a bluetooth keyboard, which to me is the ideal way of typing on the Vision Pro. But nothing beats that day 1 adjustment period because you have to take in a whole different way of using tech.
    So at this point it’s conclusion time. What do I think of the Vision Pro after 48 hours? Well, it’s a unique experience that when you try for the first time, it has a crazy wow factor to it. And as you continue to use it, you get frustrated because it’s a new method of input, but once it clicks, it clicks. As an average everyday consumer, should you get this version of it? Probably not at this price point but if you’re near an Apple store and want to see something really cool. But I’ll save my full opinions on a long term review. Like maybe in a month or so.

    If you don't use magnetic lens inserts and want as large of a FOV as possible, get a light seal with a 1 in the second position of the number. So a 11,21, or 31. The first part of number is basically narrow, medium, and wide for your face. The 2nd number is depth with 1 putting your eyes closest to the lenses and 9 being the farthest away (most binocular effect). The last part is bridge, which is W or N for wide or narrow where your nose goes.

    I demoed a unit and yes it was amazing. But they really haven't sold me on how it can be really used day to day. Plus, remember the $3,500 base price is just the unit (they have higher priced models with more storage). There is also paying for extras like, battery case, a holding case, warranty, tax, ... Folks say that the price is more in line with the mid-$4K range. I say, wait till the next generation after the first adopters have really tested this out. At least it will be fun to follow for this year.

    You immediately earned yourself a loyal subscriber because of your brutal honesty (they way I like it). It's refreshing to see someone just "use it" instead of praising it to heaven because they paid so much for it and fight to justify the purchase, you don't - you're just calling it like you see it, nice!
    Now, I have a Quest 3 - Quest is new to me, I never had one before, but I had an HTC vive that also had pass-through, but it was noisy like a barbie-camera from the late 90s, and pretty much useless, other than that VR was an awesome experience, kinda like you experience it now.
    Your interactions with the passthrough + hands controlling kinda inspired me to try mine again, because I wasn't impressed enough with the hand gesturing, turns out it's a little better than my first initial impressions gave them credit for. Now - the Apple Vision Pro has a MASSIVE resolution in comparison to the cheap Quest 3, but from I can tell from peoples videos, the light-sensitivity issue with high ISO and equally high noise - is about the same. Quest DOES have a little higher FOV (like in the 108-110 realms, while the Vision Pro is more like the HTC Vive, around 90-ish FOV, but Apple won't disclose that yet, but people report the familiar "tunnel vision" syndrome.
    I like the fact the virtual keyboard seems very useable in Apple Vision Pro, as you can have it near you. That's a HUGE handicap that Quest 3 is struggling with as the distance from they keyboard and user, seems to be impossible to control, so you sorta gotta trick it, and push it aside, with your hands. This works, and the keyboard becomes useable, but giganting and kinda like a novelty-toy-keyboard.
    Also I dunno if You have noticed the same thing with the Vision Pro, but in Quest, even though the hand gestures works fine for what it is, I tend to "snap" click a little too much when I get eager and surf lets say Imgur a little too much, eagerly swiping down or up to watch more video-clips and images, sometimes it goes a bit too fast, and I tend to "accidentally" snap-click on too much, does this happen for you?
    As for the useability of Pass through and using it as a surf-ipad thing, it works fine. I tend to use my Quest 3 in Bed A LOT, it's very comfortable to just lay back, and surf on a giant screen, while having an additional chat-screen where I chat with my buddies while surfing or watching youtube videos, for that - it's great.
    I get around 1.5 hours video time, and 3 hours chat-time with the built in battery. With gaming intensive 3D games, it quickly drops to just an hour.

    I purchased mine the day after launch. I preordered them and Apple helped with initial setup. It was a great experience . I was able to download my editing app to the vision, pro, and that has been great. It is unfortunate that final cut pro isn’t available on the vision pros yet. But like you said, this is a Gen zero product and it’s only going to get better from here. Compared to gaming goggles that are out there. That’s what people need to realize is that these are not gaming goggles these are spatial computing. This is the future of computing right here where you’re taking your computer around on your head and not carrying up laptop around. You don’t get the screen door effect like you do with gaming goggles either. The refresh rate is so fast that you can look left and right and everything is pretty seamless. The only thing that I’ve really noticed so far with the use of mine is low light situation. It doesn’t register your hand movements as easily as it does in good light environment.

      ‘Spatial computing’ is just apple marketing and you’re falling for it. The AVP is an amazing device but it’s still a VR/AR headset like a quest 3 or ‘gaming goggles’. The reason AVP doesn’t have a screen door effect is because it costs 3500 - if ‘gaming goggles’ were sold and made at the same price, they would have the same performance arguably better

    It's clear this product is creating problems to solve and by the looks of it, it's solving them a bit clumsily. As an advocate for VR who has 4 headsets, most of what I've seen out of this has pretty much been done before minus good passthrough (Though, I haven't tried the quest, I have seen people on street corners and in parks with them). I've done computer work in VR, it's not appealing since it adds a level of difficulty and strain to an otherwise easy task. I've watched movies in VR and that is great, especially during Covid where I could get together with other friends in a virtual theater and watch movies together with them (Ready Player One in 3d was a blast.) And I've spent most of my time playing games and having experiences built for VR. It's just all been done before and we've had this stuff for years. I don't see this product bringing anything new to the table.

    • @Erikjust
      @Erikjust 4 месяца назад +1

      I think gaming is defiantly where the future of VR is.
      If you can make a VR headset a little like the one shown in ready player one.
      Maybe with some gloves that have inbuilt pressure control ala if i pick up a gun in my VR shooter, the gloves will make it feel like i am actually holding a gun.
      That might be the future.
      Also if you can make it work with regular games, ala i could play the original Starcraft and with a patch i would basically be able to replace the mouse and keyboard with my hands and have it work just as well if not better.
      There might be something there.

    I think they're ripping people off by not having a usb-c port or input port of any kind since it's not possible to air drop large files and I feel like they want to force people to use icloud which is very expensive for what it is. They did advertise it as a spatial computer, and we all know it at the minimum a computer has to be able to store, retrieve and process files. Is it why they claim it's a "spatial computer" and not just a computer? Anyway, I feel like I got ripped off and returning mine next week. It also can't play 180 degree video, has no 180 or 360 degree video player that works, all VR video on youtube will not work at the moment and there's a chance it never will.

    - bigger FOV
    - better pass through with low light
    - ability to use 2 Mac screens at once
    - ability to type with all your fingers in a floating space instead of just your pointers.

Then with my wishes, it gives them a good chance to say well to get these improvements we need an M4 chip or whatever it is by then to do the better low light/pass through, more Mac options, and better detection of all your fingers. Seems like it all makes sense from a marketing standpoint. Also will be interesting if they go with 2 models of this next time or realize there are trade offs with tech to start and they need to keep it pro for awhile to provide the better VR experiences compared to their competitors. I would think Meta is going all we need to do is have similar pass through to Apple next time and have better room detection, stabilizing of windows in space and they will have a much cheaper attractive option for customers. And Meta might be able to do that for $1k or cheaper in next few years.

    When you can make your virtual Mac screen 100ft across, why would you need to worry about having multiple screens? I don’t get why reviewers are focusing on that.

    • @sputukgmail
      @sputukgmail 4 месяца назад

      @@Jbs6187 but with 100’ screen (feet not inches if you want), you can have separate windows of different sizes and shapes anywhere you like on the desktop. That’s the point of having windows to have applications in, each window is its own “desktop” that the application can use. So every window of every application is effectively its own separate display - and you can move them and arrange them however you like on a huge single desktop.

    • @sputukgmail
      @sputukgmail 4 месяца назад

      I start to wonder if people know the difference between a desktop and a window…while on MacOS a window can be made full screen, it can also stay a window and be moved around and sized etc - so instead of having a different app on a different screen, just have the different windows arranged in different places. Now - the UI can be slightly different - the MacOS menu bar only shows a single app that’s “active” at a time, where as apps on different displays can show different menus at the top of different displays, but in practice, that’s rarely an issue. Oh…and some MacOS apps have a bad habit of hiding tool panes when they are not the active app, but I haven’t seen apps like that on MacOs for years - I think devs realised it’s extremely annoying when your tools keep vanishing.
      I get that some people use their devices differently - weirdly if I’m honest sometimes when I watch them, but as someone who’s been used to working with MacOS since the original Mac and with GUI since I had to create my own, I can’t help thinking people could learn to work this way easily.

      As for the shared watching experience - remember that would need multiple $3.5k if people are watching together - that’s probably not going to be a concern then for many people for a while, so they can take a while to have developers put out things like that (note, it wouldn’t be Apple writing them).
