If you want to know whether or not you can use the Apple Vision Pro with a Windows computer or if you can hot swap the battery, this is the episode for you. Afterwards, we talk about how the new App store rules in the EU before wrapping it all up with trivia.

I'm a flight attendant and my advice is to simply let the FAs know that it's okay to tap you on the shoulder, that way you won't miss service. We deal with people wearing sleep masks all the time. It's really not that different. Also, you'll only be allowed to use it in cruise, just like a laptop.

I'm more surprised at the fact that Apple probably has been preparing for their Vision Pro for quite a long time. I think one of the big reasons why their user interface and integration is so seamless is because of all the Face ID data that they've received. When Memoji's first came out, it was a feature to laugh at, but looking back, it was probably the foundation for many of the features the Vision Pro has today. Pretty cool imo.

    • @shapeofsoup

Let eye tracking be the default, no controller, input method, then add controllers of all different shapes :) we already have keyboards, add a “mouse” like quest pro, add a rifle and pistol gun for games or racing wheel, add a pen for drawing…

The best thing of Vision Pro is not the headset, it’s the eye tracking interface! As you mentioned in the podcast, having a keyboard and looking at one window and replying there, and just switching to google docs and typing there is very useful and fast. If MacBooks came with a similar eye tracking we could have interfaces without mouse or touchpad, just add a “confirm” and “right click” buttons to the keyboard and boom. I think the “what’s the killer app?” argument is interesting. Because we only talk about that when a product category is new, and we forget about as the product ages.
Because, I don’t see the smartphone or the tablet as having a “killer app”. It’s a combo of everything you can do. If you had to choose one, it’d prolly just be the web browser.
So I see the focus of the Vision Pro needing a ‘killer app’ to not be a super useful question

I think a fix for the keyboard issue is to sort of dynamically unbind eye selection when the keyboard is out, allowing the user to hover over a key and select with a pinch (as well as allowing the ability of using 2 hands for pinching on the keyboard simultaneously). But also having swipe feature where you pinch on the first letter, swipe around and release on the last letter. It might take some practice, but if the keyboard is able to be moved, resized and geo-locked, people would get a hang of where every key is in space and probably wouldn’t have to look at the keyboard, as well as type significantly faster

Hahah. Here, Marques is like a man put on exhibition. Loved the way he[Marques] stayed silent just shaking his head when Andrew and David were discussing whether they can see his[Marques] eyes or not lol

He was in headset somehow messed up with my reality lol.

I feel so sorry for Marques when he realizes that head mounted displays often don't work on airplanes, nor in any moving vehicles. (The headtracking goes crazy.) I imagine there could be an "airplane mode" that disables head tracking, but that too would suck, just in a different way. Actually, the camera-based, inside-out-tracking should still function, so only the accelerometers would need to be disabled. That could work.
Try it in a car, Marques!

On the lack of ability to 'multi-task', I just wanted to say that IMO we do WAY too much multitasking in this decade - so much so we don't know how to focus anymore. So this may help people feel a bit more grounded as they are focused rather than distracted. Just thinking about the psychology of what multi-tasking means to our cognitive load 🧠. Thank you so much for discussions like this - I love all of you!

The eyesight would be so much cooler and more use-able if they just let you replace the eyes with custom ones. Trying to do your actual eyes puts it in the uncanny valley, but if you could replace your eyes with like anime eyes or ASCII eyes like a hacker in a sci-fi movie, or cute animal eyes, now the eyes you're using would become like a new type of fashion accessory.

I can see V2.0 having a "lock task" feature where you can lock external inputs (mouse, keyboard, etc.) to certain apps. That way you can type or scroll a website without having to maintain focus on that specific thing. It could be a simple button where you lock or unlock the window.

Most people work in 2d, but 3d artists actually work in 3d, and for that VR actually makes an insane difference if you create software that utilizes that. Small examples are Adobe medium / quill but there’s so much potential for this to be a game changer for people who are trying to work in 3d, which will increasingly be relevant in an increasingly spatial 3d world.

Just make your single monitor big enough that you can have both apps open next to each other. I switched from two monitors on my desk to one ultrawide and it's so much better without the seam separating my two workspaces. I'm kind of shocked nobody has thought about this.

10:33 also you have to consider if someone is walking around do they deserve to know you can see them? This way people around can know “Oh, you see me?”
“Cheaper” versions will prob just have an indicator light to show the same thing for the same reason.

On the Apple v EU section, another issue that isn't being talked about in Apple's whole walled garden with app store stuff is that they even wall garden the devs - you have to develop ios apps on a mac or send your code out to some service that will compile it on a mac. Whereas dev environments for android can run on win, mac, and linux.
