Thank you for the video. I have a one I have to rebuild for a machine next weekend when I'm off and I really appreciate the level of how you broke it down. If only my motor was as clean as that one , lol
My friend owns his own brick laying company . He has a mortar mixer powered by a 8hp Briggs @Stratton horizonal shaft engine. Those engines would last one season then would give up the ghost. Nothing against B@S but that mixer was run under distress for 10 hours a day, requiring a new engine every year. I asked him one day while he was changing oil in the mixer why he didn't buy a Honda and forget the buying of a new engine annually? He said they, the Honda, was too expensive. I laughed at the tight bastard and more or less hounded him, shamed until he bought a new eight horse Honda to replace the Briggs. That was seven years ago, same engine he bought brand new is still on the machine. It doesn't look like Honda covered over with mortar soup. He changes oil in that machine every Monday morning , casually thanking me for the tip.
The middle compression ring does have a taper napier facing...and the letter "R" inscribed.... on the top side (left side of break) Very good video... regards from Ireland.
Good explanation. maybe one thing to add....If you put rope into the bore through the spark plug hole to torque the flywheel nut, make sure the valve rockers are loose. Otherwise there is the potential to bend the valves if one of them end up in an open position whilst the rope packaging is under pressure.
A++ thank you for this excellent video. I did have this quick question how does oil make it into the gear reduction? Box didn't seem practical that that little flipper finger would move enough oil to keep it cool, but what do I know?
@@brianchristopher4493 there are holes at the bottom where the oil from the crankcase will flow through. The gears at the bottom will then pick up the oil for lubrication.
If those ringcompressors had a Teflon inner face they would less likely scratch the surface of the piston. This introduces piston faults before the piston even gets scratched by moving in the bore, one reason I just do it the hard way by guiding each ring into position.
I wish I had listened harder the first time I watched, regarding your warning of stripping the rocker studs 😮 I was have the worst time setting the clearance, nothing seemed to work. Then I discovered the stud had come loose and backed out. In my confusion I just made to jam nut tighter. Buying a torque wrench today too. Jeff, where do you find OEM Honda parts. It seems impossible to find them. Thanks again for your hard work and for sharing.
DRILL a hole in your table for the crankshaft to fall into so you can assemble the engine on it's side instead of fighting to hold it up while installing parts.
Hi Jeff, The flywheel is keyed and can only go on one way but the fan can fit on the flywheel in three different position with the dowels. Recoil assy can only fit the fan in one position. The fan and recoil assy have the slots that line up with the holes above indicating TDC. How do you know which of the 3 positions the fan attachs to the flywheel. Thanks Great video just confused about that detail
On the rear of the fan there should be a dowl. It fits in the hole on the flywheel. If it is not in the hole the fan will not lay flat on the flywheel.
Hi! Excellent video, thanks!! This is how it must be assembled. When assembling china made clone so called 188F, no torque wrench is needed, just tons of red thread lock 😄 and 1 meter long pipe to tight it better😄😄
Only bad thing i have had with the honda engine and yhe harbor freight predator honda clones is the exhaust studs breaking of. On nee engine's i pull them and put hatder grade bolts in an not have any problems
Where did you get that assembly tray for the GX engine that holds all of the bolts and parts while disassembled? I can't find one. Was it 3D printed? If so, can you share the files? Please? I have a North Star 4000psi 4gpm commercial pressure washer I need to repair, and it has a GX390, and CAT DX66 pump. That tray would be super useful.
found this video very interesting and informative, have a question, my engine hass massive kick back when i try to start it, i've check valves how many time. is there a way to check the decompressor or a specific point to set the valves with the decomp not engaged?
A failed compression release will make it really difficult to start, but shouldn't cause kickback. That would usually be a spark timing issue, such as a sheared flywheel key. An engine I repaired with compression release failure was "190F" (Chinese GX420) on a Westinghouse branded generator. It had remote start, which apparently automatically cranked until the starter burnt up. After that the starter rope only lasted a handful of pull starts. I replaced the starter cord, tried to pull start, and immediately decided that the broken rope was a symptom rather than the failure. If you pull the valve cover and pull the engine over slowly it is easy to see the compression release bump the exhaust valve slightly.
Would you be willing to share the file for the 3d printed organizer you guys created? I teach small engines and auto and that is the best form or organization I've ever seen!
Im working on rebuilding a gx340 that had water in the exhaust. I honed out a rust stain on the cylinder wall, i can only faintly feel it with my fingernail. Enough that im going to try run it with new piston rings. But i wonder what the wear tolerance is on the piston? The measurement shows 87.5mm on the top above the top ring. And right at 88mm on the skirts. Would you bother running it with new oem honda rings with those measurements? Not looking for top performance, just to run a water pump
heyy i wanna use this engine for a gokart i have this from a electric generator where can i find a transmission for it? cvt or a sequential prefer the sequential ofc 😂
Something like this? Mophorn Torque Converter 4-7HP Go Kart Clutch 1Inch Replaces Comet TAV2 Manco 10T 40 or 41 and 12T 35 Chain Drive Belt (1" 10T 40/41and 12T 35 Chain) a.co/d/jlkEn1P Not sure if it the correct fit.
Sorry, I just saw this. I just had to watch that part a few times, I just rebuilt (valve dropped and penetrated piston) and it started on first pull. I just followed along in your videos, thank you again!
Great video! I have a question I hope you can provide your thoughts on. I have a crankshaft on my GX390 that is that is .0004 beyond (4.1416) its service limits (1.415). This condition is only on one spot...all other measurements are at or above the service limit. This engine drives a generator and I dont believe the cranks are not available currently. The engine ran great, but I hate putting this back together with this condition. It does have an out of round condition on the journal of 0.0017 worst case. There are no oversized bearing for this motor. Any thoughts/advice on using this crank?
I am quessing this is the rod journel? If it is possible you could replace the connecting rod. That will eliminate some of the rod to crank clearance. Being 0.0004 past spec is very little, I would think it would still run fine.
When you say flywheel bolt do you mean the nut the goes into the crank and hold the flywheel on? Second is it the bung at the bottom of the crankcase? You can email me direct at jtkasprick@gmail.com
I think you are referring to the extension on the torque wrench. A straight extension will have no effect on the torque wrench setting. Adapters will affect the torque wrench setting if the distance changes between the fastener and the torque wrench handle.

We have a bunch of mortar mixers and the Hondas don’t last any longer than a Briggs. That’s why I’m watching this video 😂
Really really impressive how you guy worked on it. Keep doing more videos like this. Regards from Spain!!

If the engine is not going to run right away, why do you not use assembly lube on all moving parts?? as it has very high "cling" properties!
Very good job man
Do you have a file or link for that nice tray you have made for organizing the fasteners, would make things a lot easier!
