when this first dropped it was unreal. nobody knew who he was or what he looked like. there was 0 marketing and he 100% blew up based on word of mouth alone. it was just dropped on the internet and ppl made their way to it. he actually had a retail clerk job and would go into work hearing ppl talk abt his music but nobody knew it was him. also u made the right call listening to the originals version! the trilogy version has an extra 10th track for each mixtape and theyre all actually really good imo so if u feel like making a video on that after u finish thursday and EOS i’m here for it
Be sure to play the bonus track for each tape! People have had first listen’s and do them separately from the project or just include them like they’re the closers

I didn’t get why he didn’t immediately explode, but darkness doesn’t speak to everyone.
You gotta keep in context that this came out in 2011-2012. Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Miguel each were putting out mixtapes or albums that were so unlike what else was happening in R&B at that time. But Weeknd stuck out in his way because at the time, he was known as Drake's hometown homie with the great voice, but he pretty quickly became his own brand as Wicked Games blew up. Now that we're in 2023, the mixtapes that made up Trilogy sound dated sonically. So I try to help reactors keep in mind that you have to listen to music from this era from the context of the time period and how groundbreaking it was.
You gotta listen to the bonus tracks that were added on trilogy (the remaster compilation of the 3 mixtapes). There’s 3 bonus tracks, each is after the 9th track of each mixtape. They are so good they might as well have been on the originals. Sidenote, the difference between the remastered versions and the original tracks aren’t as big as you might imagine, there are the few big changes here and there but overall the remaster carried over a lot of the samples.
