  • A look at the train movments at Charing Cross and then a train trip to Dover Priory.
This is a pleasent trip running through pleasent countryside then along the coast into Dover. (Actually the passenger {my wife} went on to Deal)......We were on holidays from Australia. She loves returning to her hometown.

    Very nostalgic.
I remember the so-called Jaffa Cake livery. To this day I don't know why they were painted in that colour scheme. I remember the Monastral blue and grey British Rail livery that preceded the Network SouthEast tricolour scheme.
Those slam-door trains looked particularly archaic by the time SouthEastern retired them from service in 2005.
I recall the familiar blue patterned upholstery of the seats and how the headrests turned black or even dark green with the accumulation of grease! Happy days. Apart from the inherent hazards of doors being opened whilst moving, the poor souls who maintained the railway had to contend with train toilets flushing directly on to the track below. All that has stopped thankfully with the current generation of sliding door trains.

The CEP's were very good units, in my mind they looked at there best when green before they were upgraded but they great units at any stage. A very enjoyable film thanks for posting.

At lot of the seats and the headrests were broken off and they never fixed the problem EVER !! The droplight light windows at the top didn't stay closed sometimes but if you got an old cigarette packet you could shove it in to jam the window shut !! A damn nuisance in the winter when it was cold !!

Having lived in Dover a number of years, I've travelled that route many a time. Was interesting to see all the traffic parked up near Dover Marine.

Good retro video there. I did travel from London Charing Cross to Dover Priory on February 23rd 2002 as part of a rail/sea day trip to Calais. As I have been on this Kent route many, many times, it really is a pleasant trip leaving from the capital's most central terminus and its stunning views over Hungerford Bridge.

Fantastic! Loved watching the slammers pulling into charing cross, with all the commuters swinging the doors open before the train stopped, those were the days!

Another world. Sadly ! Remember the Jaffa-cake CEPs well, the old VEPs, EPBs, happy memories of working those reliable simple, if a bit noisy, units.

Happy memories. The 21.00 London Charing Cross to Dover Priory was my regular way to get to Paris, via the 02.00 sailing and the 05.20 off Calais Ville (which was either a pair of BB67400s or a single CC72000 to Amiens, for a BB22200 or later a BB1500 to Paris Gare Du Nord). The trains to Dover were normally a 4VEP (Class 423) and 4CEP (Class 411) pairing, but unlike the videographer, those in the know, opted for the 4CEP for a much more comfortable ride and better seating !
