  • 4 inch longer blade to the log is needed. I think 240 is nice for camping, 210 for hiking, 270 for survival.

Dr. Wako, these Silky saws have another, very useful, purpose. They make absolutely the best firesteel strikers I have found. The sparks they throw off the back of the blade are simply superb - even with a firesteel of inferior quality. Thanks for posting.

I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I collect flashlights and also use them in the nature, but this video made me buy a silkysaw gomboy 270. What an awesome saw... I use it when I go camping or fishing for making firewood, clearing branches, fallen trees etc. It looked impressive in your hands, but I was so happy when I received it and used it practically. Awesome piece of equipment, it stays always in my car now.

Your English is broken but you explained more in the first 2 minutes of why the Gomboy is the best then what most if not all native of the English speakers that I could find have even hinted at.

  • @virtuovice
    @virtuovice  11 лет назад +22

In my experience Medium teeth can be caught by wood sometimes while Fine teeth go smoothly. But the cutting speed is much faster on Medium teeth. So I prefer Medium teeth for 210 and 270. But for my PocketBoy 170 to cut thin and soft wood, Fine teeth feel easier. I have BigBoy in Large teeth. Its sawing motion is long and even Large teeth are not caught. It cuts very fast. So in case of 270, I would prefer Large teeth. They say Large teeth are for raw wood and Fine teeth are for carpentry.

This is the first time I've seen the 3 sizes of the saw I've been thinking on achieving. The lack of the double notch in the 2127 leads me to the 2124.

I go to a rifle range to adjust scopes a couple of times before the season. I go to a clay shooting range to practice for the official test which we need to pass every 3 years to continue to hold our gun license. Many old hunters loose their license due to the failure on the clay shooting test. Thanks.

ありがとうございました This is an excellent video. I do not take saws backpacking. I would only use it for car camping or canoe camping so the 240 is the one for me. I don't think I am strong enough to saw through the bigger logs with the 270 but I would enjoy trying! I have subscribed. I am going to look through your videos for knives that will let me create smaller tinder and use to split the smaller limbs by pounding the knife through the wood.

Rifle license is said to be tougher to keep than shotgun license for old people. We need to take 3 positions, prone, sit, and stand. I have never experienced the rifle test because I have not had a rifle license yet. To keep my deer shotgun for now, I need to pass the clay shooting test. After having rifles, I need to pass the both tests if I need both shotguns and rifles. Japanese gun license system is ridiculous even to me. Thanks.

Large teeth can be caught by wood fibers in a bit higher probability than Medium teeth. But Large teeth is substantially faster to cut a thick log. To a raw wood Large teeth will be recommended because the fibers are soft. But we usually cut dry wood for fire. Anyway I will compare Large and Medium in 270mm in a couple of weeks. 240mm is the right length anyway for regular outdoor purposes. I need 270mm individually for a survival/rescue purpose in an assumed huge quake. Thanks.

I'd say they're not better, just different. I find the sawvivor holds up better than folding saws in very cold temperatures, due to the way it's braced (i've snapped a couple folding saw blades in cold weather by having them bind and bend in the log. On the other hand, that top brace often gets in the way when you're trying to process a log. There are plusses and minuses to both.

Chamm530 One trick for scaring bears with bells is to take those little Christmas "jingle bells" and put them on your shoe laces. That way, with every step you make noise. Bears usually avoid contact with humans.
You can tell if bears are around by looking for their distinctive piles of bear manure. How do you tell the difference between bear manure and the manure of other animals? It's easy. The bear manure has a bunch of little bells in it.

I really enjoyed your video. Very nice job. I will buy the Gomboy 270. Where were you when this was made? I think there are Brown Bear on the island of Hokkaidō, but perhaps you were elsewhere?

    Great video...
Love how the guy talks [his accent]
Reminds me of the scene in Blade Runner
Where Harrison Ford walks up to the Oriental guy ..... and he says...
    "YU BRAID RUNNER"?
One of my favorite movies of all time....they REALLY should have made a sequel

Silky saws are in a league by themselves, nothing is even close to them . I own two with a third one in the mail.

Would you please tell me where I can get that AWESOME hatchet that you have? Is it Tamahagane?

I ordered handle checkering and the traditional style sheath. They cost almost 100 dollars except for the hatchet itself. Thanks.

virtuovice Than you very much DR Wako! I have been a HUGE fan of Japanese steel for years. This type of design in a hatchet would go great with my Gransfors Scandinavian Forest Axe.

no. You hear, that he does not use the saws in the right angle. The sound is not the same. He does not use all saws in the right angle. So you can t compare this 3 swas in this video.
