Alchemy in Elden Ring: Lupus Metallorum (Grey Wolf)

Within Elden Ring, wolves are associated with Empyreans, individuals capable of being vessels for gods. This assigned wolf becomes the Empyrean's shadow, gifted to them by the Greater Will to keep them on the path to becoming a vessel. If the Empyrean revolts against the Greater Will, the shadow is said to go mad devouring their Empyrean. If the Empyrean can defeat their shadow, it allows them to defy the Greater Will and usher in their own new age. By besting their shadow they evolve into the next stage of their being.
The Grey Wolf is associated with either the success or failure in the creation of a philosopher's stone. The philosopher's stone to some represents the elixir of life. In Elden Ring, a philosopher’s stone could be a viable vessel suitable to handle the power of an outer god. In this way, it grants the outer god physical form of life.
The Greater Will gains Empyreans via Marika's divine bloodline, creating new candidates until it finds the filius philosophorum (philosophers' child). Another name for the philosophers' child is the child of the sun and moon (Godwyn & Ranni both descendants of the divine bloodline), and in some literature said to be equal in power to the philosopher's stone. The outer god merges with the vessel (filius philosophorum) which can transmute their form, like Malenia transforming into the physical embodiment of rot.
