To those who say "he can't sprint," he is a distance runner! Workouts like these are unnecessary for Marathon training (although you can do strides after easy runs). Going down to doing 1000s @ 5K-10K pace is sufficient to boost vo2max. These videos are just designed to help beginners understand some easy workouts about the sport. Do you really think a sub 2:10 marathoner would do such an easy workout? Hell no!

Then what, a 10 mile cooldown?

Guys, don't be all messed up. We have 3 types of muscle fibers; fast twitch, moderate, and slow twitch muscles. The fast muscles are good for sprints but they can't last long distances. Slow firing muscles are long distances but can't be used for sprints. That's it!

for a marathoner, these reaction-time drills are pretty pointless

Good video. I have a question though. Why only 3 or 4 50 meter sprints? Wouldn't he want to do several 50's ( 20 +) like interval training or maybe that's not the point of these sprints? Anybody know? Thanks.

The point is to work at maximum speed. Humans don't have 20+ max efforts in them without a really significant drop in performance.
Also, this is something that Hall might have done once a month to stay athletic and just to be sure that all the energy systems are being touched.

2:03 Anyone notice that his left foot was forward AND his left arm up? It should have been the right arm, no?

I have nothing wrong with Ryan Hall sprinting seeing as he is a 4:00 miler, which is most people's sprint, he also ran 50 point in the 400 so no one here can really talk. But I didnt post on here about that, I cant believe this is a workout he does, this seems absurdly specific. This is a sprinter reaction time workout. When I make my runners do this its to make sure they can kick off of any foot at any time. Ryan hall doing this seems silly
