    Those 5160REF they're using for LCR's might be the best in-wall speakers on the market. They rival a box speaker in terms of frequency response and the dispersion is nothing like I've heard before - absolutely amazing!!

      TheSmalderman Triad do excellent flagship in-wall's too, one's as good as the Kef reference in-wall's. And the new Perlisten S7i-C in-wall's are overall even better than both!! The only current THX Dominus certified in-wall speakers available to buy.
      You do need good subwoofers (for music and of course movies) when using in-wall's as their lower bass under 70hz isn't the best. But anyway Kef Reference in-wall's not the best but still excellent in-wall's.

      Jaguar - back boxes are not needed for any KEF speaker (or really any speaker for that matter!). The cavity in the wall acts as the back box, allowing the highest low frequency output possible. Just throw in some basic pink stuff insulation without the paper face on it into the wall and you’ll have a perfect speaker cabinet for a KEF in wall!

    Question: what is the reason for surrounds being so high? I understand there are multiple rows and in order to avoid obstacles like humans you might need to raise it up but twitter seem to be higher than ear level of a person sitting at the back. If it was lowered to the level of persons ear sitting at the rear couch would it sound worse?

    • @AudioAdvice
      @AudioAdvice  2 года назад +1

      Great question. For most theaters, we recommend the tweeters be just over ear level, which is usually around 50" above the floor or riser level. However, in most theater rooms this puts the tweeters towards the bottom of the screen. In this particular room, because of the riser, couches and 16:9 screen, the middle of the screen is quite a bit higher than the 50". If you want the sounds coming from the center of the screen, then you would try to put them in the center. For most speakers this does not work because the tweeter is too high and the listeners are off axis and miss some of the higher frequencies. Because these particular speakers have the UniQ driver with 160 degree dispersion in all directions, they can sit higher with no off axis degradation to the listener. So these were place approximately in the center of the screen and then matched across the rest of the bed layer. FYI that if you use the free home theater design tool at www.audioadvice.com, we actually have the software do all of the real time calculations and you will see that in the vast majority of cases the tweeters area lower than in this particular theater, so your question is a great one.

    • @athx0983
      @athx0983 2 года назад

      WhitrCrowUK - the speakers would not sound worse being at ear level, but there would be a lot of obstacles in the way such as other people, the bar, etc. This is the big advantage to UniQ as Audio Advice mentions. Any speaker can be lifted higher so that no matter who is in the room with you, every ear has a direct shot to the high frequency driver of every speaker. This all works because of the incredible off axis response of the UniQ driver. The additional bonus is that having the sides and rears higher really creates an even more immersive experience that feels even more lifelike. It’s really amazing!

    • @whitecrowuk575
      @whitecrowuk575 2 года назад

      @@athx0983 well I understand now it was to keep all speakers on same plane which is important and since behind the screen speakers been used this forces higher position of surrounds. In terms of Uniq there isn’t significant drop in spl off axis indeed.
      The only downside I would imagine is with narrower angle between Atmos and other speakers leading to slightly worse separation - but all depends on ceiling height but only a problem in rooms with low ceilings.

    Your explanation and rationalization of the sound is quite simplistic. It sounds like you have fallen for KEF marketing propaganda. Good sound is all about compromises (no such thing as perfect sound). Yes it is important to have good driver alignment, but it is far more important to have excellent time alignment. Those all in one drivers are often time and material compromised to get tweeter in that location. If you can hear a distinct source from separate drivers from let's say 6' away (closest speaker) then there is a fundamental issue with the speaker design.

    • @AudioAdvice
      @AudioAdvice  2 года назад

      We agree that sound does require compromises and trade-offs. This theater was so much fun and if we had time, we could have shot a 1 hour video talking about the trade-offs, etc. In these new KEF speakers, the performance of the material and driver is truly terrific. It measures incredible in terms of smooth frequency response both on axis and off axis. So they have done a terrific job with these speakers. But to your point, there are always tradeoffs. One key tradeoff of having high off axis dispersion is that you have more sound bouncing off of the walls and other surfaces so you have to be very thoughtful about acoustic treatment. Whereas there are other great speakers that have much more narrow dispersion that have less reflections. Thanks for chiming in with the trade-off point which is always a good one.

    • @athx0983
      @athx0983 2 года назад

      UniQ is the time alignment solution. It just so happens that to get the best time alignment, aligning the HF with the MF, to where the both have the same acoustic center, allowed for the best result. That’s what’s different in a UniQ driver vs any other version of a concentric or coaxial design. No person can actually pick out the different source of sound from a tweeter and a midrange a few inches apart. But that does mean that the drivers are not working together, so issues arise, generating a smaller sweet spot and limited off axis response. The result is a sound that doesn’t feel quite as real unless you’re in that exact sweet spot. What’s really cool is the continued research into psychoacoustics that is allowing us to discover how humans really hear, and how we determine a sound to be either real, or played back, and these findings help us develop every new version of UniQ!

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 2 года назад

      @@athx0983 they may have the same acoustic centre but at what cost? Looking at the GIF on the KEF website you can clearly see that the tweeter is on the axial centreline but, is set back from the cone mid point which will alter time alignment. But that is not the biggest issue by far I have with the driver... In order for the tweeter to reside in the centre of the mid cone it needs to be stationary (otherwise it would add significant moving mass to the mid which is bad, and vary the tweeter distance from the listener). Which in turn means that the mid cone design is compromised. It doesn't have a domed dust cap or wave guide most mids use. That cap plays an important role in the driver construction. Not only does it add to the rigidity of the driver (kind of important if you are worried about distortion) but it also forms a part of the sound wave. By the tweeter staying stationary that means the volume and shape of the mid cone become variable.
      Not to mention that tweeter has a horrible looking restrictive frame around it to probably aid mounting. On top of which the mid cone moving acts as a variable wave guide for the tweeter, surely that doesn't make for smooth frequency response. It is compromise after compromise to implement a design that has been tried before and gone away from. To what benefit? None provided you keep the tweeter close enough to the mid, the wave lengths are not going to cause lobing issues.
      The design also severely limits the size of the tweeter cone, before you even contemplate the issues caused by the frame over it. What is that doing for sound dispersion? Nothing good I bet. I have yet to see any speaker that doesn't suffer greatly once far enough off axis and I don't believe there is anything special about these that is suddenly going to defy physics and produce brilliant massively off axis response while being equally good all the way back to on axis. Before I resorted to gimmicks I would make frames that sat on the ceiling that point the whole speaker towards the general seating area to give the speaker half of a chance of sounding alright. OK it may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if ultimate sound is the goal it is a little price to pay.

      @@AudioAdvice i really dont wanna nitpick because even replying at this point feels rude because it is a nice and creative setup. I would just like to say the 3060 card released in Feb 2021 as to where all it's higher end 30 series cards (3070, 3080, & 3090) released a few months earlier in september 2020. The 3060 was the kind of "Budget version" released later. As a Home theater enthusiast this room looks like an absolute home run but as a PC gamer whose been building PCs for 20 years and owns a 3080 I recognize 4k with high framerate is impossible with this setup without manually dropping all the in game graphics settings. Even my friends with 3090s struggle to maintain 4k gaming on ultra settings without fps drops. At this point i'm not even trying to rag on the system i just think it's important to know for other consumers a $400 3060 is not a good fit for this. It's kinda like building a ferrari from scratch sparing no expense then throwing a prius motor in it.
