I replaced a 10 year old MBP with a SP7. I wanted one device to do it all. Pen, touch and mobility. As a tablet, it is good enough. It doesn't feel as futuristic as an iPad. Don't believe the marketing hype you need a laptop and a tablet. If the iPad ran Mac OS I might have stayed.
1 is a computer that can run desktop software and act like a tablet, 1 is designed as a content consumption device first. While it can run powerful apps it often requires many more workarounds. All ipads can run iPadOS, no one really needs a "Pro" ipad. I can see why sketch artists would want an iPad for creative work, I struggle to understand why video editiors would want to work slower on an ipad.
I haven't used the iPad pen or note taking before, but what I have seen in other videos, the iPad is a superior note taking and even book (ibooks) reading device. I have the pro 5 and I love, however, the pen can be janky sometimes, and it gets pretty hot as well as the battery can die quickly. I did got fully digital for my notes, but last few months I have been taken paper notes then transcribing them to digital.
I have a SP7 and I'm getting the iPad Air 3. The SP7 is a good laptop but not the greatest tablet. The battery life seems to slowly get better the more I mess with the settings. I'm going to use the iPad mainly for notetaking and things like that, that I wouldn't do well on the SP7 because of the lack of apps Windows has compared to the iPad. So basically, I'm going to use both devices and use the iPad as a complimentary device.
That is the way I'm going these days. However, with the fact I'm at home 99% of the time, the Surface Pro isn't getting as much usage as I thought I would.
Hi, do you think that when taking notes using white screen on the SP7 would consume more Battery because of brightness while the iPad was on dark mode? Can the SP7 be set on dark mode? Did you do that?
That's a good question, I need to verify but I think that Apple spent a tonne of time optimizing iPadOS and there are certainly limitations in the iPad as a consequence. The Windows machine has full multitasking and background tasks are not limited, while the iPad OS can aggressively shut down tasks in the background. I probably would spend more time limiting background applications on the Surface Pro if I wanted to get more battery life out of it.
@@LinChearReal perfect. I will also use dark mode, since I like it more. I'm expecting my SP7 to arrive tomorrow. I've seen a bunch of your videos 🤭 I wanted a laptop that I could use to read in tablet mode but I wanted it to be light weight. I'm doing my master degree and thesis and I'm the type of person that opens 100+ tabs while studying hahahaha
really getting confused in choosing between Ipad and surface. I extremly intrested in having fun with using machine like tablet but still I'm thinking about doing some some little programing with machine however I had a business laptop for working and I got tired of watching windows os all the time
First, the SP7 is a computer, so how did you program it? Was it on battery saver? What was the performance setting (balanced, high, or ultimate)? What was the screen's level of brightness? Second, I get over 7.5 hours of continuous RUclips playing on my SP7 and it lasts all day when I use it for notetaking and/or Microsoft Office apps. Third, Brad Colbow (a digital artist) said the exact when he compared SP7's Pen and iPad's Pencil. Fourth, my 10th Gen i5 SP7's Geekbench 5 scores (1220 single, 4500 multi) are better than my ASUS 8th Gen i7 17-inch laptop. Fifth, the SP7's single score (Geekbench 5) is higher than the iPad Pro's, but lower than the iPad Pro's multi-score. Sixth, why compare it unplugged? People who work for a living are always near an outlet.
hmmm this feels like I've seen this comment somewhere before.....😅 Why compare it unplugged? That's how I would play my movies. I was also playing the iPad Pro unplugged, so I gave the Surface Pro 7 the same treatment.
waiiiiit a minute. You couldn't hear the background music in this? or was it too loud. Anywho, awkwardness is my middle name. Thanks for the feedback though.
The battery performance is pretty typical of a laptop for the Core i7. As seen in the video, 1.5 hour movie and 20 mins of youtube will bring you below 50%. I typically get 5 hours doing non-trivial computer work, which is alright for when I am away from my desk for a short period of time.
My i5 SP7 get 7.5 hours of continuous RUclips playing. My battery last all day using Microsoft Office Apps and OneNote for notetaking. There is plenty of information on the internet discussing ways to optimize the SP7's battery life that he hasn't bothered to look into...
@@RK-um9tu This comparison is mostly out of the box with minor tweaks for both devices. The iPad Pro was completely unoptimized though. It might be interesting to see what effort I need to get into to stretch battery life.
@@LinChearReal Understood, but no one spends that amount of money to have their device underperform or perform poorly. This is why discussion boards and chat rooms exist and Apple or MS offer technical assistance. Also, comment sections clearly reveal that the majority of people interpret these videos as if they represent (near) optimal performance, not straight out of the box performance (especially when the distinction is not stated repeatedly throughout the video).
You're not wrong. If the SP7 was my only device, I might deep dive to "fix" it. But since I have an alternative tablet, I just use that. I use the SP7 for what it excels at by default, which is a very lightweight portable computer. Shorter battery life isn't too big a deal in that scenario, because it's more comfortable working by a desk with an outlet nearby.
The new iPad Air would be great for quickly sketching. You may not like the glass and plastic stylus in which case you’ll need a screen protector for texture.
Love your comparison. Love your video layout. Overall love your channel, keep it up, looking forward to watch more of your videos. :)

appreciate the feedback!
This was a new and refreshing comparison that i enjoyed good job peace

Great video! really useful information. looking forward to more content. thanx
Thanks! Glad it was informative

The bounce of the microsoft stylus is kind of off putting.

the pro x would be a better comparison since they both have an arm processor

Is there a significant diffrence in performence, in the surface, if its charged?
I'll have to look deeper into that. I just uninstalled Fortnite.... 38GB download again :D
Good review but jesus christ Lin put some background music on low. It gets too awkward sometimes lol

You've done a nice comparison, here. Btw, what's the battery performance on the surface pro 7?

Buy both, best of both worlds then.
If you need a pc, then the winner is SP7.
