Demons and Wizards is an absolutely terrific album. It's my favorite Uriah Heep album. They can rock hard as well as play acoustic music. They've been through some lineup changes over the years but this is classic Uriah Heep. They are still active today and their current lineup is quite good. Living the Dream and Wake the Sleeper are a couple of terrific recent albums.
As somebody who loves a multitude of different musical genres, I have to say that without hesitation, Uriah Heep's "The Wizard" is one of my all-time favorite songs across all genres, generations, and centuries.
my first concert. 14 years old. blew my young mind. must have listened to this on vinyl 100 times before I saw this magic unfold on a stage. Thanks for the memories.
Uriah Heep has been around for 51 years now. They are still performing and releasing new material. So it is hard to pin down just a few songs from a 51 year career, like 25 studio albums, countless live albums and compilation albums. I am 60 years old and have loved them since i first heard them in 1972. Incidentally, The Wizard was the first song I ever heard from them! I wish I was discovering them like you are now. I envy you and what the next few years of hearing UH for the first time holds for you. Enjoy!
Demons and Wizards is an absolutely one of my FAV albums from my High School day cruising with my best friends listening (and tripping on LSD) on an 8-Track in the car . Thanks for the memories you two...TribalSkyes.
A very big fan of Uriah Heep myself, I remember first hearing them. Heavy organ, thick guitar and incredible high vocal harmonies. I was hooked. So happy to see this reaction....one that I experienced many years ago!
You should definitely do "Easy Livin'" from the same album. Then there's the title track from the album "The Magician's Birthday" and from the album Sweet Freedom the song "Stealin'". The keyboard plyer, Ken Hensley, released a solo album in 1973 called "Proud Words on a Dusty Shelf" that you might enjoy. I mention this one more for your own reference. Whether you do a reaction or not is up to you but if you are digging Uriah Heep you might enjoy Hensley's "Proud Words" The album covert art for Demons & Wizards was done by Roger Dean who also did quite a bit of work for the prog rock legends Yes.
I discovered this FANTASTIC band in 1970. This album features the classic lineup. Unfortunately we lost two members in 2020, Lee kerslake and ken hensley. Another favorite of mine. Incredible!!😀
Good ups. 1970 had the first 2 Black Sabbaths, the first 2 Atomic Roosters, first Uriah Heep, first Lucifer's Friend, first Sir Lord Baltimore, the fourth Deep Purple and more.
All great bands and great albums. When I first heard the haunting, wicked intro to Death Walks Behind You I was an instant fan of Atomic Rooster. That whole album is seriously killer. Same story with that Classic intro to Gypsy, Uriah Heep blew my young mind ( I was 15 in 1970, 65 now). And of course Sabbath and Deep Purple, what a time to experience life and music.
I love your reaction to this song. I listened to everything when 20 years old. Beatles, Creedence, Gary Lewis etc. Then I heard Uriah Heep with the heavy guitar, keyboards and the harmonies. I was floored!!!!
There's some songs that scream "this needs to be playing during a D&D campaign" and this is one of those songs! Great stuff! 👍 P.S. this is a complement 😜
Love this whole album! Circle of hands is one of my favorites on this album. The bass player on this album Gary Thain was so under rated. He was one of those bass players that played melodically and was a major part of each song. My bass playing is very reminiscent of his style. Thanks for the video! Keep'em coming
I'm glad you two enjoyed the song. I've been a life long Heepster and still enjoy them to this day. From the Demons and Wizards album you might also enjoy Rainbow Demon, Circle of Hands, and the Spell. Cheers.
Your mom has taste! Uriah Heep are, especially nowadays, most underrated and I often wondered wy all reactor do Purple or Zeppelin while avoiding Heep like a forbidden fruit :D Anyway I would have opted for "July Morning", the epic "Salisbury" or the riffy metal forerunner "Gypsy" (I still love The Wizard anyway) - thankd for doing UH and a hug to your mom! ♥ Btw there is another exceptional band that is totally ignored - try some Saga, maybe "Don't be late", "Help me out" or "Images"?
This was the first Uriah Heep song I ever heard. Every night I used to listen (on headphones) for new music on radio station KLOS-FM in Los Angeles. One night in early 1972 they played this and it blew me away. It sounded so good. I soon acquired DEMONS & WIZARDS and loved it. Try "poet's Justice" or "Paradise/The Spell". You two are a joy to behold. Your authentic enthusiasm for your music discoveries are bringing back some great memories for this 66 year old. Keep 'em coming!
loved the reaction, tnx guys. in 1972 they made two amazing albums, demons & wizards and the magician's birthday. you really can't go wrong with any song from those albums...
My 3rd time watching this reaction - love your channel, and Uriah Heep was one of my main influences as a young guitarist back in the day. It's time for some more HEEP! Any song off of "Demons and Wizards" album would be awesome for future review - thanks!
Uriah Heep released their 1st album in 1970, Gypsy was already a hit in Germany with its legendary keyboard-intro-riff. English music press predicted a short career, Uriah Heep is still there with 1 original member, Mick Box on Guitar. They released 6 more albums with original singer David Byron, out of which Demons and Wizards is the best in its entirety, but somehow they are all good. For Nick as guitarplayer: a must know is the titletrack of Magicians Birthday.... the guitar solo will make you pick up your guitar and pedal and try to play it :-) have fun. Other great tunes are Look at yourself, Easy Livin, Circle of Hands, Sunrise, Dreamer etc. If you ask somebody in Germany about Uriah Heep 9 out of 10 say: oh, Lady in Black ... in turn off my radio, when they play this song :-)
This entire album will be on your daily playlist, I guarantee! But I try to presume. Magician's Birthday is another solid album, this band is why I went back to listening to albums because of the artwork their covers are awesome.
They are probably the favorite bands of all moms in the world, Uriah Heep, Moody Blues, Procol Harum (& of course Abba). My mom too btw. try (my prefeer) - July Morning or Gypsy Queen, so Black Sabbath vibes... Enjoy 🤘 I've seen them live, they're great
I’m 63 & spent many hours listening to this album in my early high school years. Great song - I play guitar myself and like the opening acoustic guitar here. I just discovered nicknlex yesterday, great stuff. I thought I heard Nick mention Germany, my family on my Dad’s side has been traced back to Siegen Germany in 1710 - my wife & I visited there in 2018 - last name spelled Knie there. Been in the USA 🇺🇸 since late 1700’s. Sorry to ramble on😀
Hi Guys . Keep on spreading the love . I'm really digging your reactions..I am so fortunate to have been in my early teens in 1972....so many cracking bands..for you to explore. Heep are one of my favourite bands..with Deep Purple , Sabbath ,Floyd, ELP, Zeppelin....and so many more. Check out the track.. July Morning by Heep ... it's on the Look At Yourself album.. superb. Your Mum has good taste Nick. Love and peace 👍✌️
Yet another fantastic 60's-70's group that took their name from great works of literature. Like The Doors, Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones.....Uriah Heep was a character from the Charles Dickens novel Davis Copperfield. These groups were a tribute to a time when literacy was something we tried to achieve, not belittle.
Cool back story about your mother. I'm 62, so all that classic rock is my roots. Keep in mind that at the time, that heavy sound (Zeppelin, Who, Cream, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath) was relatively new. All those bands mentioned were contemporaries, but they all had such a unique twist to those instruments, riffs and progressions. There was nothing like it before. Nothing to compare it to. For most of us hearing that music "fresh," it was all completely mind blowing, discovering new worlds of sound and imagery.
Love the 12 string guitar at the beginning. A good friend in 9th grade got me into this album. He only bought the album because of the album cover which was artwork by Roger Dean who also does the YES album covers. Been a fan since then. 'Poets Justice', 'Circle of Hands', and 'Paradise/The Spell' #nicknlexrequest are my favorites besides this track.
My favourite group, so thanks for this. Other songs you might like are Stealing, July Morning and Look at Yourself. Even their modern day albums are top notch.
I think I am an original Heepster. I’ve got to love your mom for her incredible taste in music. Being almost 70 myself, I was head banging with this band in my teens, probably right along with your mom. They were referred to being “Queen” of heavy rock. Individually not the best musicians out there, but collectively they created musical magic. I think I have 20 of the 25 studio albums they have done over their career.
Great reaction guys. Please do Steely Dan. They are a very unique band that I am sure you will love. The song Kid Charlemagne has one of the greatest guitar solos. Peg and Black Friday are also great songs.
I've literally only heard one Steely Dan song before and Nick hasn't heard any!! This is a MUST on our list since we started. We'll cover him though! Thanks for the support! :) - Lex
@@NicknLex You guys will love them, because they are their own genre. Their older stuff is more classic rock and blues, then they morphed in a jazz, fusion with some r&b, regaee and pop. Very cool band. Also they have some pretty sarcastic, funny lyrics also.
German metal band Blind Guardian does a nice cover version of The Wizard. Guardian's lead singer Hansi Kursch and Ice Earth's Jon Schaffer formed a side project known as Demon & Wizards.
Very cool, Uriah Heep. The Wizard is a good short song. Now you must try one of their epic long form songs. I recommend The Magician's Birthday. It is a magical journey. Also good are Travellling In Time and Easy Livin from the same album as The Wizard. Love your reactions!
I posted a comment suggesting this, but I see you already did it -- your mom has great taste in music. I loved this song from the first time I heard it. Just in case you were curious, the name of the band came from the character in the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield.
Great choice, my favorite by them. Another one to check out by them that probably wont be suggested by others but for me is one of their very best is 'Tears In My Eyes'. Really powerful slide guitar riff and a very different middle section. Check it out, you'll love it.
You have to listen to the entire lp, but particularly the last 2 tracks-- Paradise which segues into The Spell- together. Magnificent. Then on to the Magicians Birthday with the crazy wah wah infested lengthy solo on the title track. Fantastic.
Hey guys! First off your smiles are contagious. I am happy you decided to review Uriah Heep, apparently a lot of others are too. Nearly 13,000 views of this one with 161 fans taking the time to comment as of Feb last year. I would love to see you review other songs from this album (Demons and Wizards), the deep cuts. I'd suggest you just take your pick of songs except for "Circle of Hands" which I think the song was just a filler to complete 40 or so mins to fill the album. Also not "Rainbow Demon", not that its a lousy song but the other songs are more fun and I'd think you'd like more. Keep rock'in, and I enjoy your show.
You need to know that back then albums were a story. You had to listen to the entire album to get the story. The albums for this story are Demons & Wizards and Magicians Birthday.
I read in a Ken Hensley(Heep's keyboardist, songwriter) interview, that the squeal you hear in the background, is a tea kettle whistling, tuned to "c". All this time I thought it was a keyboard, but thought something strange about that fluctuating note, anything works when it comes to music I guess. If Tom Waits, can bang on a toilet, than Heep can use the tea kettle.
One aspect I like about this band is their harmonies. Also they used mellotrons at times. On their "Salisbury" album they made a long piece using an orchestra, I think it's better than Pink Floyd's 'Atom Heart Mother'. Favorite song: Stealin'
Demons and Wizards is an absolutely terrific album. It's my favorite Uriah Heep album. They can rock hard as well as play acoustic music. They've been through some lineup changes over the years but this is classic Uriah Heep. They are still active today and their current lineup is quite good. Living the Dream is arguably one of their best ever.
@@billg763 That's 100% true !!!
Their first 5 Albums, Sea of Light, Living the Dream and Wake the Sleeper are real top gems.
Demons and Wizards killer album.
The 70's were by far the most creative time for popular music. Even bad music from that time is way way better than almost anything today!!
The album this is off of is perfect from start to finish. The last song, Paradise The Spell is their magnum opus.
David Byron’s voice is insanely good. I love lots of singers in all genres, but he is at the top for me.
Agree! 👍
One of the best
Great Album
Ken Hensley & David Byron are sharing tales and drinking wine and feeling fine RIP !!
Now they are good friends...

....thank you for reacting to this song.......it's a classic little gem.....Cheers!
Know of Uriah Heep but can’t remember last time I heard a tune by them. Nice call. Enjoyed it
Such a classic rock sound of the 70s. Those of us who were young in that era were spoiled beyond belief.

Did you know that there is a steam kettle in the background of The Wizard. Been loving Heep since 1971. Keep rocking Mick Box.
Seen em live in '75. Excellent band. Best song by them I'd say would be "stealin ".
I was shocked because I was going to recommend this song- so great - I had this when I was 14 in 1972
This whole album is outstanding. Traveler in Time the next song on the LP is a MUST LISTEN!
