    Ted Turner is the guitarist who played the quiet solo during the first passage, and Andy Powell is the guitarist who does the fast solo in the second passage. During a sound check with Richie Blackmore (when Wishbone Ash opened for Deep Purple) Powell and Blackmore jammed and as a result, Blackmore recommended them to his producer & record label and the rest as they say is history. Well, they did have superstar status.....in the '70's. By the time 'Live Dates' came out they were one of the biggest bands in the rock world. I saw them headline at Reading festival in '74 and the crowd was probably 6 figures. The Album Wishbone 4 dented their progress somewhat,although it is one of my favourites but they went on to be big throughout the 70's and '80's pretty much. I've seen them 40 or 50 times, last time earlier this year. Andy Powell is the only remaining original member but they still record original music and although Andy's voice was never as good as Martin Turner's the band still put on a great show, musically technically brilliant.

    A great band, though this track wasn't the one to show off the duel lead of Andy Powell and Ted Turner that you mentioned. If anything it was the bass which took that sparring role, with some insane runs by Martin Turner. His bright upfront bass sound reminds me most of Pete Townsend, the bass really becoming as much a lead instrument as the other guitars. As for that chilled first section, the lead guitar sounded to me to be influenced by and more reminiscent of Peter Green's bluesy sound (Peter was the lead guitarist and singer of the original 1967 to 1970 line up of Fleetwood Mac), so smooth and melodic, check out 'Albatross', 'Black magic woman', 'Man of the world', or 'Oh well'. A band to check out that were influenced by Wishbone Ash are Thin Lizzy.

      In spite of the hype Andy Powell got as the 'faster' lead guitarist in the group (and yes, he was/is an excellent guitarist), I still say Martin Turner was the "hero" of the band, with his up front contributions on the Bass AND his lead vocals. If he was just a 'normal' bass player at that time, Wishbone Ash would not have been as impressive to me as they were. I'm hoping that *Handy* from their debut album will be one of the next Wishbone Ash songs Nick&Lex review, as it shows off Martin's special talents in an extremely satisfying way...and then maybe *Phoenix.*

    At last!! I have been hoping you would do some Wishbone Ash, as "Argus" is my favourite album and has been since it came out in 1972. There is not a bad track on it, you really can't go wrong with any future picks. The other tracks on the album probably show off the dual lead guitar elements better. Thanks for this, very happy tonight!

    And I second everyone's sentiment that "Ashes are Burning" by Renaissance is a must reaction knowing your musical tastes. And also "Remember the Future" by Nektar. They would make a great double bill with Wishbone Ash!

    I was given a DVD about the recording of the Argus album. According to that guitarist Andy Powell had recorded two different solos for the track Throw Down The Sword & couldn't decide which one to use. He was listening back to the track with one solo on the left channel & one on the right (simultaneously). Someone suggested having it like that on the album,so that's what happened.

    • @sanddab
      @sanddab 2 года назад +1

      The story goes that the guy who designed the album cover for Argus was in the studio that day, and he suggested they use both solos, one on top of the other. This is in Powell’s autobiography “Eyes Wide Open”.

    1972! Amazing what great music was produced back then. I do not remember this. Love the sparse guitar at the beginning (yes, Floyd like) and then the vocals reminded me of Yes (Roundabout). The beautiful bass line that the solos played over is wonderful. Has a nice 'prog' feel to it with the break. Very tasteful.

    With Jimi, Zep, Yes, King Crimson, Floyd, The Who, The Allman Brothers, Clapton (Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos), Tull, Airplane, Quicksilver, The Dead, Deep Purple, etc. taking up so much musical energy of the time, it was easy to miss some. I know the name Wishbone Ash, but to my knowledge I’ve never heard any of his music…..thinking he was blues perhaps. This is a total shock! Prog Rock! Strikes me like a mixture of harmonies of a Moody Blues with instrumentation of Rush. Fabulous bass and guitar. Thanks to you and whoever made the suggestion for the introduction!

I always come here because I love the NicknLex reactions but I think it needs to be pointed out how great you and your subscribers are and the amount of music knowledge you both have.

    Great reaction. So glad you liked this. Boy are you facing another rabbit hole you are gonna just love !!! - The very 1st song I ever heard was on an album "Wishbone Four" called "Everybody Needs A Friend" the guitar solo made me cry. It's sooo beautiful and so are the lyrics. That was my intro to this group. In the same comments below, I mentioned the album "There's The Rub" - There is another track - called "F.U.B.B" & it's an instrumental. Two guitars playing the same notes with one an octave lower .... slowly building & building up until ---- It's a dual with each trying to out do the other. Brilliant track....Amazing album.

    Yeah, such a great song and such a distinctive sound. What made Wishbone Ash so distinctive, was the blues based duelling guitars, which were sometimes working together and sometimes working apart. But it's always edgy, and often melodic. Great tone on the guitars as well.

    You guys are my favorite reactors, by far. You two are so lucky to have found each other, and it is such a joy watching you discover the music that I listened to as a kid coming of age in the golden years of hard rock and prog rock. My first concert experience was Genesis with PG on the Lamb tour, so the bar was set pretty high from the start. Never got to see Wishbone Ash live, but Argus has always been one of my go to albums. New England and Front Page News are also great. I had New England in my car CD player for about a year and never got tired of it. I’ve been following you guys for most of the year, but wasn’t sure if you’ve discovered Be Bop Deluxe, early Kayak or PFM yet. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! Thanks again for taking me along for the ride and sharing your positive vibes. There really is an endless supply of exceptional music from this period.

    Besides all the mega groups of the 70's there were many groups that kind of flew under the radar. Wishbone Ash is one of those groups that did amazing material but never caught on. This time saw the birth of what is now called Prog Rock. Think Genesis, Yes, etc. Music was undergoing such an explosion at that time. I was living in LA from 72 to 2000 and there was so much music to listen to at the time that going to the record store and trying to choose was a challenge. But having to much choice is a good thing. And no Cream was the one band Page didn't play in although he ran in the same circles as Clapton.

I’ve heard a lot of their material, but from more of a party situation than actually sitting down and listening with album in hand. You’ve inspired me to jump back down the Wishbone Ash rabbit hole. I just started listening to a band called Crack The Sky last night at my buddied recommendation ….same story with them… I heard much of their material in a party situation… they have a killer bassist as well. Thanks again for all you do for us!
