How To Brace ANY Car For Surgery: CHOP TOPS & BODY DROPS !! Channeling A 1960 Coupe De Ville

- On this episode of Make It Kustom, I’m starting on my wife’s 1960 Cadillac Coupe de Ville project car. The plan is to drop the car 2 1/2 inches so that it will lay rocker after the hydraulic suspension is installed. A body drop involves cutting the car completely in half horizontally, so the bracing must go in all the right places to keep the car perfectly aligned during the process. This video explains step by step the process and theory behind bracing a vehicle for major automotive surgery.

Bro I'm so glad I found your channel. Great content easy going guy great camera work great tips just all around a badass. Keep them coming man
Will do! Thanks for being here welcome to the channel!
Great video! Bracing is sooo important if your cutting out any support out is car. Iv seen door openings widen out when doing rocker replacement and a pillars move making door alinement a pain. A lot of all this can be prevented but just thinking ahead and taking some time to brace things and when you think you have enough braces add one more to be safe haha
Well said Ryan! Better safe than sorry and crooked 😆
@@MakeItKustom I am new to this... what size angle iron were you using?
Glad I found this channel, wondering if you drop the body will the motor will still fit under hood, not sure how low the motor can go and still have the drive shaft fit in the backbone of the x frame
this guy ticks me off. no gloves, no welding helmet. and it’s all perfect! impressive and frustrating for my own skills!
Looks like you are using 3M welding and spark deflection paper on the glass. Very good protection- people don't realize how easily glass can be damaged by weld spatter.
Yeah it’s the best stuff I’ve ever come across. Not cheap but worth every penny
You can also damage your eyes if you are not using your welding helmet, and you don't need to ask me how i know that !
You turned up your welder, that I understand but why did you only tack without a helmet? I’ve been welding for years and if I need to do a good tack I tack about 1/2 “ long and at the intersections of the angles iron weld a lot more.
It all depends on the force is applied to the material in this case there really isn’t that much other than directly linear so smaller tax are fine
Yet another great video! I will share this with my best friend who is about to undertake basically the same job you're doing (but not channeling it ) to a first gen Dodge. He's creating a mega cab from a crew cab and an extended cab. He's a excellent welder and fabricator and is planning to brace it up similar to how your doing yours.
Right on that sounds like fun!
Love the videos! Now my go to channel for metalwork tips. What size of box section do you use for bracing? Need to brace my own project to replace the rails
I was just using 1” angle iron. 1/8” thickness
So good to see a Canadian doing things right unlike that other guy on utube
Perfect timing 👌 I have a 37 chevrolet sloper and it needs help strengthening .long ways away but this video was so helpful. 🔥 😎 👍
Awesome video man exactly what I was looking for now it’s time to brace up and start chopping on my 77 k10 first time attempting body work / rust repair
Hi, I've got a 68 cadillac convertible that I need to lift off the frame. I'm not doing any body surgery but I've been told that convertibles are tricky to remove from the frame. Would this kind of bracing be necessary?
Huge fan! I have a 68 deville convertable and my frame is toast, I have a new frame for it and will be building it up before swapping it out. I've been told that since it's a convertable I'll need to brace the car before removing it from the frame. Is this accurate? If so I imagine what you did would suffice, minus the upper pillar pieces.
Yes definitely bracing is necessary. I’m sure that I over brace in some cases but never regret it
Does tack welding with flux core require a hotter weld too as you said? Thanks.
Hello. Thanks for your videos! Can I contact you somehow? I have a few questions for you about my 59 Cadillac Coupe project, I will be glad if you can help with advice.
Yes definitely I’m pretty active messaging on Instagram
@@MakeItKustom
Sorry, but I don't use Instagram. Do you have an email to which I can send you a message?
Timely advice for the full floor replace on my 70 C10. I'd probably have been in a bad way without some cross bracing. Thank you.
Glad to be of some insight!
Do you have any pictures of your work? I’m doing a truck cab right now.
What happens if you cut the whole floor without bracing
Where can we get that fancy invisible welding helmet? :-P
They are not recommended but very inexpensive lol
@@MakeItKustom lmao the best kind
Look forward to seeing your vision/dream progress.
Thanks a lot phil me too!
Young Sir; wear a hood when tack welding if you want to see what your doing long term. Lov the vids.

Thanks. God Bless!!
You’re welcome and thank you!
This is why I love RUclips lol... How to brace a car: "this is my first time sooo🤞"🤣
For a young fella you’re pretty damn clever. Where did you get your start ?
Thanks Mike! I had some great mentors early on and was thrown in to the deep end at a couple jobs!
Nice video. I'm probably going to have to do some of this on my 1956 Buick that I'm frame swapping. Still not happy with the way it is currently sitting on the new frame.
Thanks man ! 56 Buick’s are awesome
@@MakeItKustom will be if I ever get it finished. lol
Best video and info. This ch is underrated and deserves so much more subs!
Thank you so much!
You you look awful young did you go to school for this or just learn to by yourself loving it
No school man just arch and learn and som good mentors. I went to school for welding a long time ago
Looking forward to more on the Caddy. Love these cars
Thanks so much Wade! We’re stoked for this Caddy build! My wife’s been waiting a loooooong time for this!
Years ago my buddy and I bought a 98 Buick Regal coupe something like that, and it was hit on the drivers side and looked like a Banana so we did the right thing! and bought another car and cut both of them in half and welded two sides together and made a whole new car. We did this in one week and by the time it was over we were totally burnt right out. LOL BTW Karl that is one hell of a nice Car, what you got for your wife. I've always like them, their an amazing looking car, reminds me of the 1960 Plymouth as well. It should look sweet when its done.
Yeouch! Oil the hinges lol
cool car
Thanks Craig!
Braces are structurally sound. Great job.👍🤙🏻👌😁🙏🏻
As always great video 👍
Thanks Trevor!
Awesome video!!!👊👍
Thanks Michael!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🍺🍺
Great video👍
Thanks Dan!👊👊👊
I personally do not wish to do a project like this i do wish to see this to completion because its going to be bad ass but watching how you braced this car will hopefully help me in the future thanks waiting on next video
Right on Chris thanks for watching!
Are you going to remove all the glass. If yes why havent you already remove them
No man we’re just gonna build this car so she can drive it right away with the patina and the new chassis and drivetrain. One day it’ll get full paint but at that point we are going to rotisserie and strip the car and make it a showstopper
@@MakeItKustom Sounds good. I was wondering if it was going to be in the way. Btw. The hood you straightened in the video what does it go to?
That’s for a 1940 Willys
@@MakeItKustom ok thanks
Watch your eyes !
How is one supposed to watch their own eyes? Lol just kidding
makes sense to me.
Awesome!
Good advice. I've seen a few cars become a huge mess due to lack of bracing.
Totally man, I have too! Its super important
