I've ridden the heck out of the entire H-D touring line-up and owned just about all of them. After riding several thousands of miles on a Challenger (including just completing 10,000 miles in 14 days), I have to say it's the best motorcycle I've ever ridden. BWT, mine and the two other Challengers with me had no issues! These bikes are rock solid! Thanks Tall for a great review!

Tall, you made the best case for both American brands. The Challenger is a new bike and experiencing some issues you would expect of a new model. Not that the Milwaukee 8 has been trouble free either. In the end, for the price, you are going to get the bike that speaks to you.

Great video TT. I currently own 3 Harley's. In this case the Challenger wins. Bang for buck. More included off the showroom floor. The biggest thing for me is the improved suspension. Harley really needs to upgrade their frame and suspension on the touring models. They did a fantastic job with the softails. Take care. Stay well. Have a blessed day.

Just bought a 2020 Indian Challenger Darkhorse, LOVE IT! You're right on everything you said too, and that's the stuff that made me want this bike the best out of the box bike off the showroom floor. In a few years there will be plenty of upgrades especially in the speed dept as Indian will be getting help from S&S as well as Lloyds. Oh and I'm in Port Huron, Michigan.

I love my Indian but since I was a kid I always wanted a softail, if it was not for the terrible service from the HD dealer I would be riding a HD today. To me a motorcycle is a motorcycle they have different personalities...just depends what personality you like. If I could I would own a number of different bikes for when I feel like doing something different.

I have ridden a 2020 RG and the Challenger both in stock form and for me, the Challenger wins hands down. It is just a more complete package straight out of the box for less money then the HD. Also being from Australia we don't have to worry about all this dealership nonsense that you guys in the USA have. Any motorcycle mechanic can work on any bike down here so that doesn't factor in when picking what brand of motorcycle one rides. I am pretty sure if you guys didn't have to rely on a "dealership network" then things maybe different.
Anyway nice review Tall. Enjoyed it a lot. Cheers

Love your videos. I was sold on the Victory brand. It was new and innovative. Polaris did what they did. With that being said, I will not buy another product from them. Indian is just a brand name. There is no legacy or relatives of founding members like HD has had. Indian has been sold so many times like a cheap prostitute. At one time, they were even using Harley clone engines. My Victory is a superior bike to my HD and it looks like Indian is as well, but it will never have the loyal followers and aftermarket offerings that HD has. Everyone copies Harley.

      ruclips.net/video/BOFDCnA7zb8/видео.html
I just test rode a HD Road Glide (19) today with my wife and I'm hoping to set up a Challenger test ride next weekend if possible. The RG was nice, my current (and first owned) bike is a Vulcan S but its a little small for me and definitely too small for the both of us. Beautiful starter bike, that aside the RG is a Cadillac in comparison. It does everything besides shift smoother (lol clunk). Buying is out of the question atm but in a year or so? I have to ride the Challenger first because the Limited in that Deep Water metallic blue is perfection. If I can convince them to put the dark horse engine on that bike (not a big fan of a lot of chrome) I'll be sold in a heartbeat on looks alone.
Main point of posting that is that HD RG is much slower than 1/2 a second to that of the Challenger. O'Hara was almost 30 seconds ahead when he 'went off track' and still reeled in the Vance and Hines HD with an SnS motor as if he was only leisure riding. They both were moving some serious pork shoulder but that Challenger with a little bit of tuning was insulting everyone else on the track. All this said, I like a lot of HD's style and mainly dislike a portion of their followers. This type of competition can only bring good things to all of us as consumers and I really hope it wakes HD up.

Thanks for the update and review. I think it's a business model. Harley probably makes more gross revenue and profit from the accessory side, so one might say they purposely produce bikes that are basic/incomplete/blank slates or maybe just made in such a way that they almost require some sort of customizing. It sounds like Indian is taking a different tack, more like BMW with the Challenger. Make a bike that does most things well out of the box. I currently ride a 2009 R1200RT, but owned a couple Vulcans before and also some UJMs. I am considering a second bike and HD is on the list, but you'd think that I'd be drawn to the Indian based on these reasons I stated and for some reason I am not. It just doesn't have the provenance. The culture I don't really care about, I probably wouldn't fit in and the dealer thing is ok, but not a deal breaker, but it's not a HD. That said, if I bought a HD, I wouldn't modify it much at all. Just ergonomics. I am 6'5 too and most bikes are made for someone 5'10 and less, which makes fit a problem. Anyway, thanks for the review.

Provenance? Are you buying stock or a motorcycle? At some point you have to ask yourself what does my $30k get me? If HD sold bikes at a price as “blank slates” where you could get the bike plus do what you wanted to it for $30k and have as good of a bike as Indian puts out for $30k I would agree. They don’t! You pay $30k and STILL have to rebuild the motor and suspension just to catch up. I have owned several HD’s and have no axe to grind. They ran just fine and I had no issues with them, but Indian is giving me more these days for my coin. Don’t let a company sell you intangible crap like “heritage” for a premium. It’s a simple equation....who makes the better bike dollar to dollar?

When you buy a Harley, you are buying way more than the motorcycle itself. That being said, for my type of riding, the Challenger out of the box is a better bike. Is it that much better that I would trade in my 2020 Road Glide 107 for it? Nope. Would I consider it for my next bike? Perhaps. But the down side is not the lack of support. It is the resale/trade in value. Indians lose their value quite quickly. So if you buy one, you better be ready to keep it.
My RG is not my only bike. I ride a Concours C14 and a CBR954RR. So I already have a "Performance Bagger". Maybe I would feel different if the RG was my only bike.

The motor comparison is apples to oranges completely different the Indian motorist what they use in the Ftr it's also very similar to the V-Rod motor. The 60 degree twin in the Indian revs higher. To me the best thing about Indian is its competition to HD. HD needs to do some serious upgrades on suspension. I shouldn't have to spend 2000+ in the aftermarket for good suspension and 3000+ to get 100 hp. That said, I love my Harley's and don't see an Indian in my future, I still like air cooled, pushrod motors. I have a Sportster Roadster, FXDR, FXLRS, and a Roadking. All great bikes.

fair review . Had the opportunity to test drive HD, BMW TOUR ( wow ) and challenger . Fell in love with the power and tech of the BMW but it’s not my style and didn’t like the look. Winner was the Indian for me that beat out for overall comfort and build quality. Thanks though for your review. Very happy decision .

Yeah I'm about 2 years too late for this comment but better late than never lol! Great video BTW just like several others I've seen recently. My family and I have owned HD bikes since the 40s and still have 2 of those fossils in the garage!
Now I can't speak for all and this is just my opinion on the topic but unless an individual has abused he or she's HD since the evolution engine then idk what everyone is referring to when pertaining to reliability....?? Harley has came a long way just like many other brands have and most people don't know this but one of Harleys largest and main issue consistently was pre evolution vibration from the engine causing several issues.
So when people say well indian, Honda, etc are reliable compared to HD, I honestly don't know what they're referring too??
Also people say these Indians are a better bang for the buck..? From the price tags I've seen the past 5 years in comparison, I'm stumped on those comments as well lol!
The Indian has its own particular and specific look just like the HDs and the Indian to me looks more bubbly and abnoxious even futuristically made which is fine if that's how you roll.. I love old school and HD keeps it HD for 85% of its lineup. Resale value is substantially higher as well. However, I do think all.of these machines a way over priced for the average consumer ESP touring models. At the end of the day people have their own preferences and that's cool with me as long as you ride and enjoy the ride but at the same time, I havnt seen too many people in the world walking around with Indian, Honda or can am apparel and even tattoos lol and probably never will! Personally, I've always owned harley except for mine and my kids dirt bikes and I always will because I've had nothing but luck and great experiences with HD at home and on the road, close or away and they're are always gonna be an HD dealership close by incase you need anything at home or away so this guy will pick my HD anyday until something just ridiculously drives me away from the brand and the machine itself! Goodluck to everyone though!!

I purchased a 2020 Indian challenger I feel like the bike comes with motor as well as technology, I have it with the tour pack & having the Loyds tune added in the next couple of months and Kst handle bars I test road the road glide then I test road the challenger it wasn’t close on how much technology you got with the challenger and suspension surpassed the Harley-Davidson suspension and that windscreen going up and down Harley needs to add that for a stock bike it’s running with the Harley-Davidson Cvo’s and half the price liquid cooled you can run it in heat fast, Loyds tune vs a 10,000 131 motor Loydz Indian challenger tune $600 I will take that 10,000 and put down on a toyhauler! A cvo need to come with a 131 motor you shouldn’t have to pay a extra 10,000 on top of a 50,000 dollar bike for a 131 when the challenger runs just as fast as the cvo which is a 117 motor but the Harley-Davidson bike also cost 20,000 more thanks tall and you didn’t even ride a challenger that had loydz tune

I rode many Victory motorcycles over the years and had a Victory CrossCountry up until last year when I decided to buy a 2019 HD RGS. I love my RGS but knowing how much money I dumped into it to be a halfway decent ride makes me wish I would've waited for the challenger.

I test drove one of these on a trip after testing the road glide and the street glide in the same day. (Harley and Indian dealerships are right next to each other in Columbia, MO) Off the showroom floor, the Indian challenger was the better bike for me. I'm 6'1" and I was comfortable on the bike without mods. I had to change a few things on my 2022 Road King Special to feel comfortable. I don't know about long distance comfort on the seat, but for the 30 min I rode it, it was pretty awesome. Don't get me wrong, I love love love my RKS. But when I bought it, I didn't realize how much I would love riding and I didn't want a bike with a fixed fairing. Now I want to go longer distances, so I am looking for more of a touring bike as well. I think the only thing I would add to the Challenger would be highway pegs and a touring pack. With the Street Glide and road glide I would have to change the seat, handlebars, windshield and a few other things to make it work. Great review! thanks. :)

However I ain’t gonna lie the challenger came in a suuuuuuuper close 2nd. I just don’t like the fairing look in the front. I cannot get passed it.

The Indian is a great bike and like you said it’s not like a Street Glide. At first glance it favors a Street Glide. I wish Harley-Davidson would open the M8 engine more then what it is. Definitely upgrade the suspension and include the lock bags. Harley-Davidson is a great bike and I plan on having a 2021 Road Glide Special. As always it’s a pleasure watching your channel. Ride safe and keep the rubber side down.

Yeah the bike is okay but for me personally I will stick with my vintage because I really enjoyed riding with my windshield off. I didn't buy a motorcycle to look over a windshield or at a bunch of gauges I love having the bike naked. That being said though I have friends that have gone a few blocks and came back and said I got to put my windshield back on I can't ride without a windshield so everybody is different and nobody is right or wrong about it. I have other friends that swear up and down they will never own anything but Harley-Davidson and that is fine to guys going with your bad self no hard feelings. Meanwhile I got another buddy who just bought an 1800 cc Honda Cruiser for $3,800 and he is tickled to death. At the end of the day he will probably have more fun than any of us haha.
I have been riding for so long there is nothing new Under the Sun. time and time again I see guys by motorcycles and end up going to a stage 3 Performance Kit getting the bike all tricked out and a custom paint job and you know what's coming after that they sell it. It's like they always think the next check they write is going to make them happy.
Just go out to the garage and hit that ignition and ride man.

I’m missing about an inch off my pipes and peg studs lol. Not sure a stock glide will get me there. So it’s between Challenger decked out or a CVO with KST bars.

Tall I loved this video, sometimes I think no matter what people ride they will always say negative stuff about the other. When the challenger came out everyone just crapped on HD and was all about Indian. Now people are seeing it is give and take on each bike from every company. My question for you is would you feel more comfortable working on the HD or the Indian..ie like you are going to do an aftermarket mod yourself, which seems like a better fit. I chose my FXBB because it is simple simpler than my triumph t120. So for me I like that, sorta like how the inline 6 in XJs is so simple helps me perform more work myself .

Apples to Oranges...the bikes to be compared have to be Stock. Either both as Stock base models or both as Stock models with every factory option/upgrade applied. Those are 2 different classes with 2 different prices. By doing this: the viewer can determine "value" of the particular motorcycle in each category (acceleration, braking, handling, comfort, storage capacity, range between fill ups, user friendliness, maintenance frequency and costs) and then determine the over all value of each machine and then filter the assessment of the bikes through their own needs and riding style, to come to a conclusion of best value for themselves.

Here from Ohio. Grew up with Harleys. I own 4 currently. But I rode the new pursuit model and I have to say, even with my road glide having the 131, the stock pursuit felt faster and a ton more comfortable. Test rode it for 8 hours and decided to sell the Harleys. I've never felt so confident leaning into sharper corners on a bagger.

I like the fact that you are an HD owner and you were not trying to bash Indian just giving a fair and HONEST opinion. Too many HD owners just flame other bikes to make themselves feel good about their HD. You touched on dealerships, the other problem regarding Indian is that there is chance Polaris will do the same thing they did to Victory and suddenly stop making them.

I have a Harley road king special 114 at the moment with a stage one tune , the bike has just had its 15000 mile service & at the same time it had to have a rear head gasket because the stock gasket failed, the bike was 4 months out of warranty & Harley wanted big money to sort the problem , Harley no there’s a problem with there M8 gaskets but they won’t do anything about it , so I’m a bit disillusioned with the brand am now looking at Indian baggers as the technology seems to be better , but the only problem here in Britain is the depreciation with them & the lack of dealers , thanks for your comparison I will now test ride the challenger , I’m also 6ft 4 inch’s & you didn’t dwarf the bike which was good !!

A water cooled engine is almost always going to be able to make more power than an air cooled engine. This puts Harley in a difficult situation trying to give Harley buyers what they want (traditional air cooled engines) while having to comply with ever more restrictive EPA regulations. While Indian is American owned the feel of the motorcycle is that of underlying Japanese engineering. Not saying this is a good or bad thing; just that is the way they "feel" to me. I think tradition Harley buyers are going to be hard to win over. But clearly Indian is making headway. In the end the important thing is to ride; whatever it is you're riding.

Since the folks at Polaris are probably reviewing the comments, here is my opinion. Competition is a good thing: I have test rode all the Indian models with the exception of the Challenger and Harley models (except Trike). The Indian models look good except for the Challenger. The engine sounds awful. The front end is just ugly, rest of the bike ok. Polaris needs to stop trying to copy Harley and do their own thing with styling. The Victory line had far better styling in my opinion so see if you can bring that back into the styling of the Indian or for a certain Indian touring line. The quality of the materials used for the Indian line is not up to par at all for the price, it's just cheap materials. You do get more options from Indians on a stock bike which is a plus for sure. All the bikes from both manufactures ride differently and you need to test ride them before purchase and just go with what you like. I was looking at purchasing a Victory or Indian a few years ago, then during the process of trying to figure out which one, the announcement came of dropping the Victory line and just running with the Indian line. That was the deal breaker for me of doing business with Polaris. I have heard the gripes of Victory owners afterwards of the extreme depreciation resale value and availability of parts. That was so wrong to the customers and is the main reason I will not be buying a Polaris product of any kind. Had a friend get the short end buying a jet boat from Polaris. If you are going to make it, stay in it for the long haul. Make it better, style it better, use better materials and think about long term instead of short term quick profits to appease the shareholders.

Seat hight compared to Harleys. What kind of tires on the Indian as compared to Harley. Then compare the ride... Just a bit more info. Didnt see the vid on your harley upgrade. I just got a chance to test ride the challenger at Panama City. It was a nice riding bike. I did expect it to be faster than it was. I have an ultra limited stage 2 build. The bike I rode did alot of popping felt out of tune. I tried different modes didn't seem to matter. Also rode a roadmaster limited. It felt light compared to my ultra.i have the same bike as your dad. The audio on the Indians were not up to par with my stock boom audio. I'll give them the suspension and clutch feel over harley. But I like the m8 better. That roadmaster limited is a nice motorcycle, liked the cooled seat feature. It ran a little rough for my liking as well.they both remind me of my stock ultra.
