Sometimes the changed his return destination so I drive his cars back to wherever he wanted, even to his home in Wales. I remember this gym he had in his house. I met his wife too. He told me I could run up the mileage on his cars so they weren’t parked up for weeks. He had a Carrera 4 which I used a lot. I got on really well with him. I really liked him.

    I grew up riding dirt bikes on these very tracks in St Gwynno's forestry as a local. The only thing that can make you appreciate this video more is going there for yourself and seeing how tight and technical but unbelievably fast these tracks are. Most of it remains unchanged to this day. Watching this video now, it's hard to believe that such driving is possible on these tracks, but only McCrae knew how to do it with no compromise.

He was going to either set a ridiculous time and come out on top or go down in flames, but that was Colin. Pedal to metal, all the time. And of course there's the calm and steady pace notes of Nicky Grist.

      As a virtual rally driver I'm always impressed by F1. Sure I can get through a stage with a decent time, but being able to do that consistently with a crowded track? That's another beast altogether. :)

    • @zwjna
      @zwjna Год назад +1

      @@nightowlrally Sure I can get through an F1 lap with a decent time, too. But F1 is about consistency lap after lap - okay, sure. But so is the WRC - it's a speed competition! It's completely useless to be fast in one stage alone if we are going to underperform and post mere "decent" times for the rest of the rally. At which case, we are lacking skills. Consistency is a byproduct of proper skills. If we lack skills, then our good laps are mostly a byproduct of luck. Exactly the same goes for rally stages - specially real rallying, with just one try available and no restart button nor flashbacks; with more difficult physics than those of Dirt Rally and WRC games; around massively hostile roads, etc.

      Here's Johnny you can’t compare the two because they both come with their own difficulties. F1 comes with more endurance, more g force and more car management. Rally on the other hand comes with driving in brutal terrain, super narrow corses, and almost driving blind but thanks to the co driver they have a bit more understanding. They both are difficult.

      @@gollese mate rallying and F1 are worlds apart. Both have lost alittle bit of magic in the last few years. He's doing 130mph down a B road with a totally chill co-driver. RIP big guy, the king of rally, who died far too early. This video shows the coordination between car, driver and clipboard where they are all acting as one. Colin can shoot down a road that'd have the seat sucked into my rectum due to the pucker factor, and yet so humble that he'd sign a ring-binder of cars and drivers that I kept as well as answering questions he must have heard before. A decade later he was dead. As a newly-qualified pilot that year I can understand fully what killed him and the others. If only a mountain lee had thrown the Twin Squirrel clear, he would have made it. Same with David Leslie of Touring Car fame, another humble guy with a lot of enthusiasm and time for his fans. An everyday plane or helicopter that's suddenly hitting the ground. It's a terrible irony that someone so quick and fast with a car would die in an aircraft crash. David Leslie and Colin McRae would keep a car under control but died when an aircraft slammed into the ground within a year of each other. We won't see drivers like this again. RIP Colin and David. I ve learnt driving like that in DR 2.0 . This kind of driving constantly playing with the weight of the car to set it for corners is actually doable in this rally game

    Unbelievable skill. He really was that good. There is no F1 onboard that impressive that is for sure!

    Every time he snapped the car around I thought he was going to lose it, but this is McRae, so he didn't of course! Senna would be happy with such performance. Fun fact, he also wanted to do rally, but I guess f1 was fine enough for him. Still I would have liked to see him and McRae duke it out.
