  • After a month of steam train journeys throughout the Upper North Island with the Glenbrook Vintage Railway & Steam Incorporated, it was time for Ja 1271 and its consist of 6 preserved A class cars to return home to Steam Inc's base at Paekakariki, north of Wellington, NZ.
To do this, the GVR organised the 'Great North Island Steam Tour' which travelled down the North Island Main Trunk Line over a few days, as well as some side travels to Tokoroa & Whanganui. TNZ Studios was apart of the Team for the majority of the tour, and we present to you a video presentation of the train's journey south.
The tour started at the old Auckland Railway Station, now known as 'The Strand', and spent it's first day on a leisurely run to Hamilton, before making the big journey from there to Ohakune - including a run up the mighty Raurimu Spiral in the wet! The train then travelled in beautiful conditions from Ohakune to Palmerston North where the tour would continue from there.
We see the steam train with many different angles from lineside, in the cab, from the air and more, including the run up the Spiral! It has been some years since a steam train ran on the route from Te Kuiti to National Park, the last being in May 2017 with Ja 1275 and the Tangiwai Memorial train. Enjoy this in-depth look at the train's run down the spectacular North Island Main Trunk Line!

Beautiful video and to my (somewhat untrained) eyes beautifully fired and operated; Ja 1271 is a star.

Water should only be below half a glass as above water is liftes and then destroys the lubrication of the valves and cylinders , see the steam aeouhd the pistons , I used to fire for N Z R ,

White exhaust , too much water in the boiler

White exhaust doesn’t necessarily mean high water. None of these shots with white exhaust looks anything like priming.

White exhaust is more often caused by a cool ambient temperature, which looks to be the story here. Judging by it’s performance the engine looked to be well driven and fired.

It was superheating pretty nicely and the water was half to three quarters in the glass so there was no issue of having to much water
