- Steam has returned to the heart of New Zealand's Central Plateau!
As part of the Glenbrook Vintage Railway's 'Great North Island Steam Tour' with Steam Incorporated's Ja 1271 and carriages, an excursion was held from Ohakune to Taumarunui and return on the North Island Main Trunk Line, with the highlight of riding up the world famous 'Raurimu Spiral'. The sold out train took place on Saturday 22 October 2022 on a beautiful springs day, with Mount Ruapehu basking in the sunlight for all to see.
We take a comprehensive look at this steam train from many different camera angles, including the run up the Raurimu Spiral, which was the location for a special photo run for the paying passengers. Sit back and enjoy as we take you through the day with the GVR & Steam Inc.

Wonderful video my friend! Amazing steam locomotive 🤩👏👏🤩
You made great work of the weather we've been having. Some very very beautiful shots indeed!
Very vert good .
Very nice excellent Like my friend greetings
Amazing😃⤴️⤴️Very cool train and beautiful scenery😉👍️✨Thank you for sharing such an excellent video :)
Another great video, thanks for posting.
Youve taken some marvellous 'shots' there. 8:34 { storming South under SH4 was awsome}. Good to see the passengers being able to get out and see the train working in a run-by👍
Amazing work mate!
Magnificent video. The loco seemed to be performing very well. It is a long time since I travelled on the Main Trunk Line- once on the Silver Star and back on the Silver Fern (that shows how long ago), although I did not see much of the beautiful scenery on the Silver Star, it being a night sleeper.
On my most recent visit to NZ, I had hoped to video some trains on the Main Trunk Line, but did not see any at all. We even stayed overnight in Ohakune, and stopped at a café alongside the line.
Good stuff Finn, great coverage on the spiral, drone and gopro certainly add interest and a different perspective compared to just lineside shots.
That really is a good locomotive.
Chur you could make a great tourism advert out of this footage
Nice footage, good to see an authentic rake of carriages rather than some of the more colourful creations often seen behind steam specials!
Even though the carriages would have never have been that clean, or in that combination in NZR days, same with the locomotive too, she would never had operated in the North Island.
When I was a kid I used to travel on the spiral on a jigger with the linesman,no names no packdrill……aaah ,those were the days.
Fabulous Video, New Sub here! thanks for sharing
