For as goofy as this movie is, the detail of the cure is surprisingly powerful. The fact that Mr. Freeze made a cure for his wife's illness only to find out that her condition advanced to the point that it was useless is sad enough. The idea that he constantly carries it around with him to remind himself of his failure and use it as motivation to do ANYTHING to avoid being too late for her again is heartbreaking.

It's scenes like this that make me believe this movie could have worked. If they had just turned down the silliness (and some of the neon too, it was way to bright and colorful) this could have been an amazing movie. The problem is that "Heart of Ice" and "Pretty Poison" (episodes of the animated series) which they were clearly drawing from, do not work with the tone and style of Batman 1966, which they were also drawing from. A more dark and serious version of this movie could have been amazing.

Just heard the news; RIP Joel Scuhmacher. B&R might have been a mess but it's a lovely mess at that. This scene in particular was it's main success and still one of the definitive moments in a Batman film period. He saves Mr Freeze which was a change of pace from the previous movies; but he does it save Alfred and Victor at the same time. By saving Alfred he gives Victor a reason to do good again along with the info Nora's still alive. He litterally turns Mr Freeze face. It made an impact on me as a little kid at the movies when I first watched it; made me want to strive for goodness in life and never give up on others. It's been mostly solid; there's some people that won't change for the better but if Mr Freeze could we all could. Joel directed the hell out of this scene, Arnold acted his butt off, and Elliot G scored it great. Plus it's one of the few times George felt like the Bat. Perfection in such a mess.
    Rest Easy Joel.

It's not a good movie by any means, but this scene shows the kind of potential it had if Warner Bros. allowed Schumacher to make a more serious movie. They also fast-tracked the movie, rushing production in more ways than one. It also shows that Schwarzenegger could have been a great Mr. Freeze if he played the role closer to The Terminator.
Joel Schumacher also wanted Batman Forever to be a much more serious movie than it ended up being, digging deeper into Bruce's psyche and even showing elements of a horror movie at times. There's talk that there might even be a much darker Schumacher cut out there. I'd watch it if it ever released.

indeed, it's more likely that JS Pretty much wanted to follow up Burton's legacy or at least keep with the DarkerVision of the Caped Crusader, and i hink it can partly be shown by the scenography here and there, expecially in Forever, but again WB interfered too much.
Those were the same years that Alien 3 had the same issues, with the producers getting too in the way of director and making a huge mess, i guess the lesson wasn't learned back then, but the Batman Forever and Batman & Robin actually managed to do that by how they were received by audience.

The sad thing is that if you take 3-4 scenes from this movie in isolation you can see the skeleton of a far better film. They needed to tone down the silliness (it's way too much like Batman 1966 to work with the story beats of "Heart of Ice") and tone down the neon in this movie (there's just too much and it's offputting) and I think we would still fondly remember this movie. It's a shame too, because I honestly like the casting (I think Clooney is a bit of a weak link but he's got his moments too) and going a little more serious with the villains especially (and both Arnie and Uma Thurman are solid actors, like imagine an Ivy who's a bit more serious and deadly, like a plant based Beatrix Kiddo) and the whole thing could have worked.

The line "Vengeance isn't power. Anyone can take a life, but to give life...that's true power." is a powerful line. Freeze helping Batman cure Alfred is beautiful. If the whole movie had been written like this, it would have been a great film.

Batman Forever was originally written with more introspection for Bruce in terms of his killings in '89 and Returns. In a deleted scene, Two-Face calls him a murderer just like him and it hits Bruce hard. It ties into him telling Robin not to kill. Obviously, the cut was mangled by Warners, but by the time you get to Batman & Robin, any level of nuance Schumacher wanted to add in was thrown out the window to make a toy commercial.
So to answer your question, yes, if Keaton had stuck around, he'd be closer to Clooney here.

This film has a handful of moments which are pretty good. All the scenes with Bruce and Alfred are heartfelt, a couple of scenes between Bruce and Dick, and this scene. These are sequences where the actors and the writers seemed to have given a damn. It also gave the film a tonal whiplash with everything else being so ridiculous and goofy. I actually think Clooney as Bruce was pretty much perfect, it’s just that he didn’t even try to be Batman.

Here when Batman is showing Mr. Freeze proof and explaining the situation about his wife as well as asking for his help as the doctor he used to be, I honestly find this to be rather touching and well shot. This is such a powerful scene. I think the reason why this film has such...mixed reviews is that it tried to combine two versions of Batman; the Ominous Golden Age and the ridiculous Silver Age. But sometimes two things DON'T go great together, at least when they're haphazardly thrown together. On one side, We have Mr. Freeze, the psycho with an ice gun, spouting chilling jokes like a maniac. On the other, we have Victor Fries, the man desperately trying to save his wife from a disease that has no known cure. After Batman defeats Mr. Freeze, he goes and comforts Dr. Fries, offering him a chance at redemption.
