I really appreciated your covering the use of the tools that come with the car. My daughter is currently changing her tire while parked on the side of the freeway. I was able to talk her through how to use the jack thanks to your video and the pictures it provided.
Thanks for the video! It was complete and helpful with good safety reminders. My favorite part is all your wife's stuff in the cargo area - made me feel like the video was for everyday folks like me!
thank you so much, I was in the middle of a Complete breakdown, and I didn't know what to do because it's the first time my tire popped ever. and my dad was 100 miles away and I didn't know what else to do, and you helped me fix my tire, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart
+Masked Marauder I'm glad I could help out. That is exactly why I started this channel. You may have inspired me to get some more videos up soon (But I no longer have a Day Off, so it may be a while).
Masked Marauder you should practice these things before its an emergency what if your phone didnt work? remember this for when you teach your children to drive they shouldnt leave the driveway alone for the first time until they have changed a tire, check tire pressure, pump gas, check oil and radiator fluid remember what I just said for all things in your life practice before its an emergency
I'm 20 years old and I don't plan to have children, but I'll definitely try to get as many people I know to learn how to change their tires. Thanks, +Morty Sanchez
Thank you for this video! My wife and I got a flat tire tonight on our Prius. Couldn't find the car manual, so your tip about taking the lug nuts off first and then about where to place the jack were majorly helpful. Thank you again!
Good one. Now I just need to have a flat. Good thing are cars are similar! I particularly liked the part where you discover what's under the trunk tray.
I think you are a brilliant instructor and I'm sub'd. Needed to borrow and fetched my car's jack for a little household job, then realized I should refresh my memory of how to change a tire -- and using this equipment, since the 2007 ("Sipper") is fairly new to me. Got my tea, turned on the laptop, and luckily found your vid first. I can hardly believe how thorough and sensible your presentation is! As others have said, this is great info laid out exactly as needed to help a person in trouble. Good safety cautions, too. Dude, this will not only help me right now, but if I ever actually need to use the jack on the car ; ) Thank you so much, and the wife!
Well, I think you win the award for nicest comment. I'm not really doing videos anymore since I got too busy with all of the other life stuff, but thank you very much for you kind words.
@@ericstevens6568 You're welcome, Eric. I'm sorry to hear you have retired from helping us. But I know, life does go on. Maybe you'll get back to it in the future : ) All the best...
My tire holding nut just stuck - rusted inside. I envy how easily you just unscrewing yours with just your hand. Not sure what to use to unscrew mine to get the tire out.
Good job! I had to teach my son's Weebelow den how to change a tire and how to replace a bulb. Lots of parents came to me later to tell me that they didn't know a lot of what I was teaching. Always a good thing for new drivers to know.
I love collapsing baskets. I wish they were stronger, and that more engineering/design styles were in production, but they're gr8 even tho expensive. Besides that, thank you for showing that battery part. I might need to repack my car even tho I just changed the spare, put the torn one in the trunk where the spare was. I hope I didn't put a baggie of laundry on top of that. ('Just making sure I did right) I put a torque wrench in my repair kit. It is actually an inch pound torque wrench. It is set to 240 inch pounds, so I torqued my spare to 76 foot pounds, *I think*. ... (I just believe a torque wrench and tightening to spec is an excellent safety measure). I was trying to figure if tighter or looser is needed on the spare ...'Will have to think about that. Currently, I am sticking with 76 ft lbs as I drive about 75-80 miles into an urban area from a mountain area. In the meantime, after inflating the spare to the specified 60 psi, I cleaned off and opened my oils reservoirs for the first time. I have been above 4k ft coming from sea level for a week or two. (Oops). I might buy a new tire and practice fixing what I have. I thought my new Roadside Assistance program (not aaa) would bring me a tire to swap. They won't, so I made good of most of the points you said before I needed'em. I like your video, t is long for someone in an emergency who doesn't know what to do, but it addresses all of the points, even when not stated directly, like avoiding cross-threading by finger-tightening first, and when to and not to start both undoing or tightening bolts. Thumbs-up
Great video only question is shouldn't you tighten the bolts in a star pattern when putting the spare on, I was surprised to see you tighten in a circulare patern
That's a tough one. I don't think there's enough space for you to get any penetrating oil down to the threads. You need to get some leverage. A pipe wrench would likely give enough span on the jaws to grip the grooves in the gray plastic cover, but I can't guarantee the plastic will hold up to the torque. Good luck!
Dude! Set parking brake! Then... Loosen the lugs nuts (bolts) before your jack even budges the car. Not a lot. Just enough to break them free. Not is a circle. Criss cross. Up, down, left, right. Or in the way you'd draw a 5 point star. Left, right, downward left, up top, bottom right. Then lift the vehicle mayne. Loosen the the rest the way. Pop tire off, new one on, tighten fairly tight. Drop jack enough to where tire barely touches the concrete. Torq it harder. After you set it. Torq the peewaddin' out of it sun! You got this. Don't forget to check your blinker fluid and halogen fluid. It usually goes out when your tire goes completely flat. Hondas, Fords, Chevys, Cadilacs, and Toyotas are infamous for this. Don't step on Superman's cape, don't ____ in the wind, don't pull the mask off the ole lone ranger an don't mess around with _____? 🎵🎶Ah doot doot dooten doot doot en-doot-un dooo 🎶🎵 Yeah 🪖 -Murica 🇺🇸 Yee Yee 🤠
That is probably the most foolproof way to ensure that the lug nuts are properly aligned with respect to the through holes on the tire. You get the same effect by putting the lug nuts on "semi-tight" before the final torque is applied. Thanks for the comment, and thanks for watching.
Thank you for the video! We'll see how it goes. Going out to check my right, back tire. Would anyone here have any clue what's wrong if the disc brakes gets really, really hot and starts making irregular noises when driving? Kinda squeeking. Suggestions? Thanks from Sweden!
Swe Kiwi Brakes will get hot when driving. The brakes work by turning the kinetic energy of the car into friction (heat) in order to slow the car down. That's why the pads are made with materials that don't change in character when they heat up. The squeaking noise is typically an indicator that the pads are wearing down and need changing. Brake pad manufacturers put a material in the depths of the pad that will make a high pitched squeal when rubbing on the rotor (the metal disc) letting you know its time to change the pads. Alternatively, if the brakes are getting hot and squeaking without applying the brake pedal, you could have a warped rotor (you might also feel a "shimmy" in the wheel with that), or a defect in the rotor or pad. Worth getting checked out if you're not sure. Failed brakes will really ruin your day! Hope that helps.
Although the spare is smaller than the standard tires, all Prius's should come with a spare. That is definitely something to check if you are buying a used car. You can always order a replacement spare if needed, but that should be factored into the cost of the car.
Victoria Keeys I'm afraid I've not seen the type of lug nut you're describing. If you could somehow post a photo of it, I would certainly by glad to give my two cents.
Thanks for watching. The spare tire is designed to go on whichever tire went flat, either front or back. It is only temporary, though. It is true that you could probably more safely leave the spare tire on the rear for longer than the front (less weight, less wear from the drive train and steering). To get the spare tire on the rear if your front tire is flat would be really difficult. One would need to jack the rear of the car, put the spare on the rear, then jack the front, change the rear for the flat. Trust me, just put the spare on the front and fix the flat as soon as possible.
Gotta wake up tomorrow morning at 8 to change the front driver side tire….It's totally flat….The only difference with this video and my situation is that the car is parked on a hill…..lets see how this goes….great video though….
Sorry, that's a little beyond my scope of knowledge. If you are getting an error message on the dashboard display that says something about parking on level ground and putting the car in park, this has actually got something to do with the auxiliary battery (the one that starts the car) being low. Simple things first, I would try jump starting the car.
Currently they are Michelin all-weather radials, but I do not really have a particular brand loyalty here. I will typically buy tires at either Les Schwab or at Costco, whichever is cheaper.
Although I have lived in the snow, and even driven this car in snow, I have never used snow tires. I've found the all-weather radials to have sufficient tread to get around. Especially with smaller cars that have smaller wheel wells, snow tires do not add that much in the way of traction, and you really need to change them out in the summer so that you don't wear down the tread excessively. Too much work for me.
I followed the instructions in this video and my car fell off the jack after I taking the flat off. At that point I couldn't get the Jack back under the car because it was too low. After the fact I was told I should have engaged the emergency brake. That information would have been extremely helpful to me.
Oops, about seven minutes in engaging the emergency brake is mentioned.. still could have use that advice up front. The first few minutes of the video gave me enough info to feel like I could get started.
Scott James So sorry this video wasn’t what you were looking for. The beauty of RUclips is that it gives people a chance to help each other from a distance. I wonder, would you tell someone that their attempt to help you in person was “worthless”? Hope you find the help you need.
Modern spares do pretty well up to about 60 MPH. My recollection is that is the recommended speed limit either stated on the tire or the manual. In actuality, I have driven these spare tires to 65 or 70 without any serious wobble or anything, but the handling of the car is a bit different at those speeds with the smaller wheel
