MyDayOffProjects
Добавлен 30 ноя 2011
This is the stuff I do on my days off. Home maintenance, car maintenance, woodworking and building projects, green energy projects, and probably a few others.
In most videos, I will attempt to accomplish several tasks: First, I would like to give you enough information to do the project on your own; second, I will try to pass along any tips I've picked up over the years; third, I will try to explain how various things work (parts, tools, etc.); and last, I hope to make these at least somewhat entertaining.
Please enjoy the videos (and hit the "Like" button if you do). Let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to suggest topics you would like to see covered, and consider subscribing to be updated when new videos get posted.

MDOP#18: Radial Arm Saw Refurbish II
Просмотров 9 тыс.11 лет назад
In this second of three videos, we finish stripping down the radial arm saw and get it reassembled. I continue the tour of the inner workings of the saw, and along the way are some handy tricks for dealing with rust and old grease.
MDOP#17: Radial Arm Saw Refurbish I
Просмотров 28 тыс.11 лет назад
I got a cheap radial arm saw from Craig's list and set about the process of taking it apart to get it working properly. I give a brief description of the various functions available on a radial arm saw. Given that I've never owned a radial arm saw before, this was also a great opportunity for me to learn how all of the different mechanisms work. This should facilitate any necessary repairs in t...
MDOP#16: Tire Rotation
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.11 лет назад
I rotate the tires on the Prius because it's time. Why should you rotate your tires...Tune in.
MDOP#15: Prius Tire Change -- How to change a tire with those tools in your car
Просмотров 147 тыс.11 лет назад
My wife has been urging me to do this video since I started this channel. The idea is to really go through how to change a tire from start to finish in an elementary fashion so that you could refer to it (say, pulling it up on your smartphone) when you get stranded with a flat tire.
MDOP#14: Tire Pressure -- Everything you ever wanted to know (and then some) about tire pressure
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.11 лет назад
I've got low pressure in a front tire. I examine how to figure out just how many psi I need to inflate the tire. How to check a tire for leaks. I even briefly mention the ideal gas laws (for all my nerdy homies out there). Yep, we're talking Gay-Lussac.
MDOP#13: Honda Odyssey Oil Change
Просмотров 3 тыс.11 лет назад
I change the oil in the 2008 Honda Odyssey with less discussion about the various steps. Yep, only one video for this one. I will also change the air filter and, (after some failed attempts) describe how to reset the maintenance light in this vehicle.
MDOP#12 - Pear Tree IV: Splitting wood and Stump Rot.
Просмотров 71511 лет назад
The logs are cut, Now they need to be split. Watch me struggle while I split a handful of logs (I haven't done this in a while). We start the process of getting rid of the stump with some "Stump-B-Gone" type product. I even get the family involved. Also, I need to clean up, so I show you a handy way to store your extension cords.
MDOP#11 - Pear Tree III: Firewood
Просмотров 41811 лет назад
The fallen pear becomes firewood...And a unique coincidence!
MDOP#10: Pear Tree II - The ravages of fireblight
Просмотров 27411 лет назад
We get up close and personal with the fireblight. Unable to cut low enough down the trunk to eliminate the fireblight and save the lower limbs, I timber the tree. The chainsaw requires some minor repair. Also included...Free marital advice.
MDOP#9 - Pear Tree I: Pear tree meets chainsaw (chainsaw wins)
Просмотров 17611 лет назад
This is the first video in a series of four where I begin the process of tackling an ornamental pear tree infected with fireblight. I talk a little about the operation of electric chainsaws since I will need one in order to try to save our pear tree from the scourge of fireblight.
MDOP#8 - Hooks Follow Up: Finding a stud using a studfinder and how a studfinder works
Просмотров 29011 лет назад
In this follow up to the hooks video, I discuss various methods and tricks to find a stud behind drywall. We use percussion, measuring, an edge-detecting electronic stud finder. I also go over how various types of studfinders work.
MDOP#7 - Cord Reel: A quick tip for a convenient plug
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.11 лет назад
This is just a quick tip for where to easily hang a cord reel in your garage.
MDOP#6 - Sonoma Oil Change III: The new oil filter and the pour (sort-of)
Просмотров 14 тыс.11 лет назад
In this third (re-uploaded) of 3 videos, I actually finish changing the oil. I expound on the construction of oil filters and attempt to pour the oil one handed while filming (unsuccessfully).
MDOP #5 - Sonoma Oil Change II: Draining the oil and the filter wrench
Просмотров 13 тыс.11 лет назад
In this second (re-uploaded) video in the series, I drain the oil and remove the oil filter. I have some fun getting dirty, and get ready to get the new oil in.

MDOP#2 - Hooks I: Selecting the wall anchor
This video is life saver, thank you very much
I love collapsing baskets. I wish they were stronger, and that more engineering/design styles were in production, but they're gr8 even tho expensive. Besides that, thank you for showing that battery part. I might need to repack my car even tho I just changed the spare, put the torn one in the trunk where the spare was. I hope I didn't put a baggie of laundry on top of that. ('Just making sure I did right) I put a torque wrench in my repair kit. It is actually an inch pound torque wrench. It is set to 240 inch pounds, so I torqued my spare to 76 foot pounds, *I think*. ... (I just believe a torque wrench and tightening to spec is an excellent safety measure). I was trying to figure if tighter or looser is needed on the spare ...'Will have to think about that. Currently, I am sticking with 76 ft lbs as I drive about 75-80 miles into an urban area from a mountain area. In the meantime, after inflating the spare to the specified 60 psi, I cleaned off and opened my oils reservoirs for the first time. I have been above 4k ft coming from sea level for a week or two. (Oops). I might buy a new tire and practice fixing what I have. I thought my new Roadside Assistance program (not aaa) would bring me a tire to swap. They won't, so I made good of most of the points you said before I needed'em. I like your video, t is long for someone in an emergency who doesn't know what to do, but it addresses all of the points, even when not stated directly, like avoiding cross-threading by finger-tightening first, and when to and not to start both undoing or tightening bolts. Thumbs-up
What load capacity jack is enough for prius gen2 ?
QUE FUE LOQUE DIJO NO LE ENTIENDO
Dude! Set parking brake! Then... Loosen the lugs nuts (bolts) before your jack even budges the car. Not a lot. Just enough to break them free. Not is a circle. Criss cross. Up, down, left, right. Or in the way you'd draw a 5 point star. Left, right, downward left, up top, bottom right. Then lift the vehicle mayne. Loosen the the rest the way. Pop tire off, new one on, tighten fairly tight. Drop jack enough to where tire barely touches the concrete. Torq it harder. After you set it. Torq the peewaddin' out of it sun! You got this. Don't forget to check your blinker fluid and halogen fluid. It usually goes out when your tire goes completely flat. Hondas, Fords, Chevys, Cadilacs, and Toyotas are infamous for this. Don't step on Superman's cape, don't ____ in the wind, don't pull the mask off the ole lone ranger an don't mess around with _____? 🎵🎶Ah doot doot dooten doot doot en-doot-un dooo 🎶🎵 Yeah 🪖 -Murica 🇺🇸 Yee Yee 🤠
Can you drive on the free way at 65 mph with the spare?
Modern spares do pretty well up to about 60 MPH. My recollection is that is the recommended speed limit either stated on the tire or the manual. In actuality, I have driven these spare tires to 65 or 70 without any serious wobble or anything, but the handling of the car is a bit different at those speeds with the smaller wheel
Like your take 2. :)
That's a tough one. I don't think there's enough space for you to get any penetrating oil down to the threads. You need to get some leverage. A pipe wrench would likely give enough span on the jaws to grip the grooves in the gray plastic cover, but I can't guarantee the plastic will hold up to the torque. Good luck!
My tire holding nut just stuck - rusted inside. I envy how easily you just unscrewing yours with just your hand. Not sure what to use to unscrew mine to get the tire out.
Question: The console does not rotate 45 degrees to the right and left when the lock lever is pressed. ????
Check out the very end of video #18 to see where the mechanism is for the miter lock. It is fairly easy to access, and I suspect the notch for the pin may need cleaning. Good luck.
the console does not rotate 45 degrees to the right and left when the lock lever is pressed ??? thanks
There is no way to learn from this when everything is on fast forward
Thanks for helping my son change his tire!
Thanks from Austin Tx for the video.
I really appreciated your covering the use of the tools that come with the car. My daughter is currently changing her tire while parked on the side of the freeway. I was able to talk her through how to use the jack thanks to your video and the pictures it provided.
That makes me very happy. That's exactly why I made that video (I can't believe it was 9 years ago, now). Thank you for the comment. You made my day.
Great video only question is shouldn't you tighten the bolts in a star pattern when putting the spare on, I was surprised to see you tighten in a circulare patern
This reminds me to check the tire pressure in that spare, haven’t used it ever and the car is now almost fourteen years old. Thank you
That was great, thank you for posting !
Remember to Loosen you ug nuts before jacking the car up. Much easier!
You saved my day!! ❤️
I have this exact saw and I need some help. The nut and the plastic bevel gear fell off of the threaded, shaft elevating rod when I was attempting to raise the blade. Can you remember how I get that thread rod to come back down far enough so I can thread the nut back onto it. Presently, the rod it almost flush to the surface, and I cannot get the nut onto it. Thanks!
I'm so sorry, but it has just been too long since I've even looked at this saw to give you any kind of helpful answer. I remember it wasn't easy getting access to that rod, but I don't remember how I actually did it. I wish you all of the luck in the world with it.
I think you are a brilliant instructor and I'm sub'd. Needed to borrow and fetched my car's jack for a little household job, then realized I should refresh my memory of how to change a tire -- and using this equipment, since the 2007 ("Sipper") is fairly new to me. Got my tea, turned on the laptop, and luckily found your vid first. I can hardly believe how thorough and sensible your presentation is! As others have said, this is great info laid out exactly as needed to help a person in trouble. Good safety cautions, too. Dude, this will not only help me right now, but if I ever actually need to use the jack on the car ; ) Thank you so much, and the wife!
Well, I think you win the award for nicest comment. I'm not really doing videos anymore since I got too busy with all of the other life stuff, but thank you very much for you kind words.
@@ericstevens6568 You're welcome, Eric. I'm sorry to hear you have retired from helping us. But I know, life does go on. Maybe you'll get back to it in the future : ) All the best...
Just pulled my grandad's identical radial arm saw from underneath the carport the bevel was stuck I Googled found video and thank you
You spent 3/4 of this vid yakking and then we cant even see what ur doing when working...esp at fast speed!! wtf
Wow!!!! viewers and new comers to the hobby, this is very dangerous move starting the saw with junk on the table. Also at 8:36 into the video did I see that carriage move from the arm as he started the saw????? lucky the saw did not come at him, what a bloody mess. At 8:55 he said "is off a little bit", by the sound the blade made is off A LOT. He took the saw apart and didn't make any adjustments. Viewers and new comers this is not a safe way to operate a radial arm saw. 1- (this should be your first adjustment) level table to arm, 2- blade 90 degrees to table. 3- blade parallel to fence. 4- arm travel 90 degrees to fence. 5- paralleling blade to table. And without the clear bottom blade guard this is a very dangerous saw. At 11:12 did he just lowered the blade while running?, very unsafe move. I can see why people are getting badly hurt. No knowledge of how to operates it safely and no common sense. If that blade touches anything while running it will come at you. Take the video down, make a new safe one for your viewers, edit in parts of your project and walla! we may have a good video. Be safe.
nice 👍
a 2013 video viewed in 2021. I was lucky enough to have all the components of the broken handle. I'm 3d printing a new one with the spring components. Thank you for the alignment information. I will use this.
Sears Craftsman 10" Radial saw Model No 113.198110. I just got one of these gifted to me. I'll be looking through your videos with interest and hope they will help me with my refurbishing.
Como te fue en tu restauración? Pudiste girar el motor? Acabo de adquirir el mismo modelo pero los ángulos están bloqueados...
This is a very helpful video. I enjoyed this instructor. He was very thorough!!! A+ instruction!
I just got a old radial arm saw and so happy to find your video!!
You changed a wheel, not a tire :D
I heard some Prius’s don’t come with a spare tire
Although the spare is smaller than the standard tires, all Prius's should come with a spare. That is definitely something to check if you are buying a used car. You can always order a replacement spare if needed, but that should be factored into the cost of the car.
Once you release the leveler for the RIP saw you have to pull back on the level just a little more to release it out of its 90 degree position my son figured out it's not frozen I thought the same thing although we did have to get the bevel to work properly...
Thank you so much for the tutorial. Just what I was looking for. I have the exact same saw that I bought at a garage sale for $50. The parts are all gummed up and stuck and wanted to take it apart to clean them. So glad your tutorial popped up. What kind of lube did you use to grease the parts?
Just an all purpose automotive grease.
Many thanks mate.
Too much talking . Please just get to the important stuff
I just got done doing the exact same thing too the exact same saw on my RUclips channel as well..lol Good stuff
Never say never. I just bought two 7770s and eyeing a 7745 for sale. I think I'm addicted.
Thank you for creating this video. I found it super helpful. All the best for you and the people you love.
How do you remove the bevel cover in front? Having a hard time taking it off
Thanks for the video. My friend bought the same saw for $20 and the rip swivel was frozen, so this video was very useful.
I assume you'd already taken all the wheel locks off of yours?
I think the parts that are "frozen" might not actually be stuck. I think theres one latch aspect, which your releasing, but theres usually(at least on mine) like a detent pull button that releases it. so those two beveling aspects that are stuck each may have two things to be manipulated in order to move them.
You seem like a pretty nice guy to make this video for us, thanks friend, for the info and entertainment for free. have a great week
great video,,,just to make it easier to turn the strap..try using your ratchet, not sure what size the square tubing is but either 3/8 or 1/2 drive should work...
Thank you, well explained, very helpful
I followed the instructions in this video and my car fell off the jack after I taking the flat off. At that point I couldn't get the Jack back under the car because it was too low. After the fact I was told I should have engaged the emergency brake. That information would have been extremely helpful to me.
Oops, about seven minutes in engaging the emergency brake is mentioned.. still could have use that advice up front. The first few minutes of the video gave me enough info to feel like I could get started.
Thanks fore show me how to chance Tayer
No jack stand in the rear?
why is it that when men get older they start getting long winded and adding in convo that isn't needed?
