I have a bunch of nieces and nephews and what I have noticed is that pretty much all of them have a switch and every birthday party or get together the kids do use theirs and will use the kick stand and individual controllers. Most of the kids are around 10-14 years old, and I've noticed that even when they aren't using it for two players they will sometimes put the switches on the stand and play with with one controller sideways or with the adapter, I'm guessing their hands get tired from holding the switch. Honestly I have a big problem holding the switch for extended periods too, and I'm about to buy the 3rd party joycons. Anyhow I can see why Nintendo went that route and while it is gimmicky for adults, for the kids it is a nice feature.

They cater to different consumers, I imagine there isn’t going to be much overlap between the two consoles imo. The Steam Deck to me caters mostly to people who are already into pc gaming and have a steam library already.

    • @Whitedudeabove
      @Whitedudeabove 2 года назад +17

True. But I also feel like there will be an overlap. Not only does the Steam Deck have almost Switch's entire non-exclusive library. But it's also possible to get a hold of the exclusive ones too. And better yet, the Deck will play the vast majority of them better than the Switch. Even some of the exclusive ones.
Now while Switch has a very casual playerbase. And those casual players probably don't feel like going through the hassle of making it work on the Deck. I still wouldn't dismiss the amount of non-casual players who use the Switch that will jump ship to the Deck. Considering before the Deck, Switch was the only major portable console.

Honestly, while I did love the switch at first, less and less Nintendo games seem Interesting to me. When I travel I only use the switch on flights, and unfortunately get bored of it in an hour. There are so many games on my pc that would be so sweet to play portably on good performance and resolution. I use a case for my switch all the time anyways so that’s basically the same experience portably and imo bulk is a small price to pay, for multiple games Ik I’ll invest in and actually play during those flights, road trips, waiting times etc…

People with good gaming PCs are kind of a minority so that whole casual playerbase is untapped potential. With the Steam Deck being so cheap and having access to most of the Steam Library including juggernauts like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and God of War, the casuals who have never touched Steam will now be buying a ton of Steam games and Gabe will make a bunch of $$$ to make up for selling Steam Deck at a loss.
You could even use the Steam Deck as a mini-PC and emulate a ton of stuff making it an insane deal. And swapping out the 64gb drive for a larger SSD is a cheap and easy process.

I feel if you are going to use the switch on the go, buy the OLED for the bigger handheld screen and the better kickstand. • @dragonfang8670
    @dragonfang8670 Год назад +4

As someone who works in IT, I've ditched PC gaming due to the annoying complexity that it has. It's not as simple as popping a CD/cartridge into the console and boom, plug and play. Older games sometimes have compatibility issues and I'm not going to talk about how much more comfortable consoles are, let alone the tinkering one has to do when games are poorly optimized. This leads me to the issue I have with the Deck and the reason why I'd never buy one - when you buy a game on the Switch, you know it will work. You know the devs will put the time and effort to make a nice port. Case and point is The Witcher 3 - the game does not look amazing - but it's the full version and it plays really well. On the Deck, it's a different story. Are we expecting that devs will put in the extra time to make the game run smooth on the Deck or will users have to adapt to the graphical settings/stutter games might suffer?
Regarding the battery life - I had no idea the Deck only lasted about an hour if playing big triple A games. When work requires, I have to fly to other countries and most flights take over 4 hours. The Switch comfortably lasts the entire flight. Furthermore, if I'm home, I can spend the whole morning in the sun lounger without having to even worry about charging the console. That's a VERY big plus.
Regarding the Deck being able to emulate games - that's fun and all but... why would someone emulate the Nintendo Switch's games (besides the single-player games)? For example, in Pokémon you don't have access to the most recent updates, can't complete raids with anyone, and can't battle anyone online. What's the point of playing an emulated version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons if you don't have access to community creations, if you can't visit other people's islands? The same goes for Mario Kart, Mario Party, Smash Bros, Splatoon. The console and most of it's first party games are literally designed to be enjoyed by multiple people at once, that's why the kick-stand exists.
The Deck will come and go and the Switch will still be the best portable choice.

@@pixelmentia Thank you for your input. Most of my friends and colleagues who worked in IT also ditched PC gaming once they started working. When i went to my military training when i was switching jobs we got breaks nonstop in between chapters. We'd whip out Mario kart and with 2 systems wed split screen with 4 people. Also if you have kids they straight up dont care about the size. Theyll use it on the go. Overall id still take the deck. Cant wait to get mine. I love gaming on my onexplayer

Some reference for comparing battery life:
    Steam Deck: 5310 mAh battery
Switch & Switch OLED: 4310 mAh
    Swich Lite: 3570 mAh
So Steam Deck actually has 23% more battery charge than the Switch/OLED.
I have a really new Switch OLED, Nintendo gives 4.5-9 hrs of battery life.
My experience from playing a more demanding game like Breath it's probably average 5 hrs realistically.
If you had a battery in a steam deck that could play Elden Ring for 5 hours, your hands would probably would get too tired from holding the brick in your hands first.
Just plug in a ~30$ higher capacity power bank to 6x your battery life on either console.

I bought a switch to play games on the go. I bought a switch Oled. When I go to buy games, seeing some games going for $60 when it has been out for years, is crazy to me. And I'm surprised there isn't more people talking about the price of Nintendo games. That alone put me off. I just spent $350 on a console with games that's been out for years and they don't go down in price at all?! Having a ps5, it just makes me want to spend $60 on there instead of a 5 year old Nintendo game. I'm shocked they can get away with it. So a steam deck just sounds way better. Especially with steam sales. I've been very tempted to return the switch because of how expensive the games are.

For 5 years, I owned a Nintendo switch. It was really fun, I had fun with my friends. In 2021 I just stopped. The games felt old and for little kids. I wasn't interested in a small indie game or new final fantasy, or a mid AAA game that was terribly overpriced and not ported well. Plus everything in the switch looked bad. It wasn't till late 2022. I found out about the steam deck. I was curious and found out it could run games at a solid speed and actually had a huge library of fun games I liked like black ops, Elden ring, 2k, War thunder, etc etc. I immediately bought one and sold my switch. I gotta admit it was really expensive and knowing storage would be a problem was a downer. But once it arrived I was blown away. Doom eternal at 60 frames at high graphics? Linux? Roblox? Xbox? I became obsessed with it until I found out 2 things. 1: the dock sucks, and 2: Extremely unstable. The dock is way overpriced. Plus I have a 4k TV and seeing how bad it looked scaled at 1280x800 killed me inside. I then tried to upscale the resolution to 4k, but then cringed in 5fps and freezing every 5 seconds. I went down to 1920x1080 to find stable 30 fps. I found gamescope which massive improved my frames to stable 60 in almost every game. Next, the steam deck is really unstable. It crashes frequently, corrupted files, black screen, slow menu. It drove me insane. I had to watch some videos to fix it.
In conclusion, Steam deck was much better for me because I could play any game (even my old nintendo games) and actually have good performance unless on a TV. But since the steam deck is so open built, your gonna run into alot of problems but I say it's worth your money.

For me battery life dictates 80% of my decision in owning a portable handheld. No matter how good it is if its gonna nail me behind a power outlet most of the time then I might as well just play on my PC. I own a switch and the real OG portable PC handhelds( GPD win 1,2 & 3) and I still opt for the switch as my go to platform because having the OLED version could give me 4h30m battery life at the very minimum while on my GPD Win 3 the very minimum it could give is around 2hrs.
And no, I got a steamdeck before. AFAIK I am one of the earliest owners and the very minimum playtime I had with it is 1hr23m with the same everything on my GPD Win 3. So I sold it. 😅
And my go yo portable console to this date is still my ps vita because it can give me a very minimum of 5h30m to this date.

Great video- thank you! I have a Switch, it’s my first Nintendo console since NES, and I LOVE it. I also have an Xbox Series X (and One X). Between those two consoles/ecosystems, I think it takes care of anything I would want to play outside of a few PlayStation games that interest me (I had a PS4 and sold it actually). However, just about everyone has a cell phone. If you’re going to cloud stream Xbox games, you could just use the Xbox app and multiple options for controls, such as the Razer Kishi. So, if I were to have a Steamdeck, I think it could fill some of the PlayStation gap, but only when those games are made available on PC. Unfortunately, since it’s not a closed ecosystem, there’s no guarantee that the PC games in the store will work or are optimized. That’s where, although enticing, the Steamdeck falls apart for me. I think it’s a badass console though. The controls look fantastic and I love the ergonomic grip on the back. In fact, I had to buy a third party case to get that similar grip on my Switch!
I don’t think either one is better. Knowing what I know about games on Switch, Astral Chain is not a game I would be willing to sacrifice. It’s a top-5 game for me all time, and it’s only on Switch. The same goes of course for Zelda BOTW. Bayonetta 3 is on the way, Mario Odyssey was fantastic, etc. However, if I hadn’t known anything about those games, have zero consoles in my possession and I’m starting from square one with a handheld device, I would buy the Steamdeck. If it were an option in 2017 and I had nothing else, I would look at the controls and graphics and my decision would be made right away. On the flip side, if you have an impressive home console like PS4, PS5, Xbox One S/X or Xbox Series S/X, those will play most of those Steamdeck games better, and then having a Switch for handheld is an excellent complement.
It’s also worth mentioning, if you have a home console, you can stream games to your cell phone, meaning you can have a handheld device for those games too. You can’t take that cloud streaming experience outside of your home and expect it to work, however. Many public Wi-Fi connections are severely limited and mobile streaming will be spotty. In that way, the Steamdeck would be a better experience for sure.

Everyone keeps tring to compare Nintendo products to other companies without realizing Nintendo is first and foremost a toy company. They make products that are fun and thats it.

It's the lack of transferable cloud saves, plus having a Wii U and therefore having played a lot of games I want already on it (MK8, SM3DW, Bayonetta), that has led me to probably being the last person to not have a Switch. I can't believe they still don't have a quick way to transfer saves. I assume if your Switch breaks your saves are tied to your account now, though..?

Guess I'll get the next Nintendo console I stead and see if they get it right then, or just buy a Switch then. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This has been my experiences with the Steam Deck,so far:
Hardware wise I've changed one thing, I bought the 512GB Steam Deck, but I upgraded the storage to a Micron M.2 2230 2TBs of storage and I have a 1TB Sandisk Extreme Pro micro sd card.
I haven't had a problem with any games,I can also create custom button layouts, for all of my controllers/the system will detect, which controller I have plugged in and what game I am loading,so I can use a/any controller, for any game I want.
I have done a lot to my Steam Deck though/ I formated the device though/started from scratch, I cloned the drives, to start with and created some custom drive clones, which I started by running them in emulators, before I installed them back on the Steam Deck, to figure out what I wanted to keep and what I wanted to get rid of and then after everything worked in emulators/emulation, I then tested and optimized everything on the actual Steam Deck.
An optimized/reconfigured version of Steam Decks OS runs on top/in all of this/I kept some of the GUI/Graphical User Interface, but I also added a lot in, where I thought the original Steam Deck's OS was lacking things, but I started with Arch/Manjaro Linux and Windows though, its not dual boot though, they run simultaneously,in real time/its kind of hard to explain, but they kind of run in a sleep mode and when a certain thing/task needs to be done, that portion of the OS wakes up,its more efficient than just running Windows/its better on performance/battery life and processing power and it allows me to be able to run what ever I need or want to, I'll go into some of the tools that I use, to make this happen, but A LOT of this is my own code/IFTTT, on top of these tools, I also have to deal with permissions and root, while keeping security in check, meaning I still maintain a secure system and the reason I've done it this way, is for performance.
So,like I've already said, a custom version of Steam Deck's OS runs on top of all of this, kind of like when you have Ubuntu installed and you want cinnamon's desktop/GUI environment, so you type in a terminal on Ubuntu, sudo apt install cinnamon or on Arch/Manjaro,its sudo pacman -S cinnamon gnome-terminal,but you also need lightdm/icon themes and what not too, but you get what I'm saying, my custom version of Steam Deck OS runs ontop of all of this/I have Windows on mine, plus full arch/Manjaro Linux, with some add ons, for support for debian based Linux and support for software, I use a combination of A LOT of things, with some built in IFTTT/If This Than That, example,IF its raining, don't turn on the sprinklers, with that simple mind set, you can accomplish A LOT.
These are some of the tools/software I've used,I've also used some of my own custom code, also I don't pay for any of this, I've just added this, into my own custom code and removed what I didn't like, So what I use is, Steam/Steam Play, obviously, but I also use Wine,CrossOver,GameHub, LutrisGaming,PlayOnLinux,Browsers,Terminals, but I don't use all of any of this/I have mainly just used what I wanted out of the code and ripped out what I didn't want, its kind of an OS at this point/its built into the core of the device,I only update the parts I want as well, meaning if I don't like something in an update, I won't update that portion of the update,I don't know if I've violated any user licenses, but the device just works now, no matter what I'm trying to do,meaning I can work from the device, the only thing it doesn't do well, while maintaining performance, but I wouldn't want it to do this anyway, because it would use up A LOT of its resources/power, it can't emulate multiple OSs at the same time, while doing a lot of tasks,I reserve these tasks for my laptops one has an I9, 3080 and my other laptop has a Xeon W-11950H VPro processor and an Nvidia RTX A5000 Max-Q 16GB, they both also have 128GB of RAM and three 2TB SSDs and a 7200RPM 6TB hardrive,so 12TBs of storage, they both also have Linux Manjaro AND Windows on it.
It hasWIFI 6 AND 4G LTE built in as well.
The reason I need this much power, is to test my code, in multiple emulators, simultaneously, also gaming.
This is what else I've done to my Steam Deck and how I use it, at times, I plug it into a monitor/I can use peripherals/keyboards,a mouse, any controller/Xbox 360,Xbox One,PS4,PS5,thats mainly what I've tried/added drivers for/custom mapping and so on for, so far, but I've also added support for,Codecs,Image Viewers,Image Processors,Image Compression,Editors,FontEditors, anyway you get the idea, I've added support for basically everything and customized everything, the device no longer has limits, from a software aspect/perspective,the device also knows what its being plugged into, meaning, IF I plug it into a TV/Monitor/a specific monitor/TV, it knows what I want the environment to look like/it has a custom desktop/UI/User Interface/GUI/Graphical User Interface, depending on,what im plugged to/what I have plugged in/when it sees a certain display,it configures the system a certain way,if I plug in another peripheral, it knows/sees that and may change the GUI configuration/even functionality, based on what it knows, I'm trying to do, more If This Than That,it also has voice control too/I can say, open this specific program/Software/APP/it has Android support as well/like I said, ANYTHING I want to run on it, can be ran, it also knows, if a legacy piece of software is trying to be ran, so it can emulate that environment or use a form of compatability mode, so it can run the code/software,either by recreating it all together/emulating it or using legacy software to run the software or a combination of both. Anyway I'm really liking the device so far, by doing things this way though,I won't know when developers add support for certain things/for me basically after the first month, everything just worked, it took me ABOUT a month, to get everything working perfectly/flawlessly, every single time,at this point I would trust the OS to run a server,it has, If This Than Thats, for every scenario, A LOT of my IFTTT is backed up,so anytime I get a new system, I put them on my new system, I have SOME custom ones, but I have some in a universal folder/these IFTTTs work on any system, also I'm not talking about IFTTT,I'm just talking about the mentality/action,meaning the code could be in C/C++,Assembly,Python,Java Script HTML/CSS,PHP and so on,when I'm talking about IFTTT,I'm just talking about the mentality, its what allows me to work only 4 hours a day, seven days a week.
Anyway so far this has been a really good system, but I honestly can't tell people that, because I'm not running the software it was shipped with/I've customized basically everything about the Steam Deck.

I guess I'm still the only person that doesn't use the cloud LOL. I have servers/a good many, but, I own the hardware/servers/I don't pay a subscription,I use the cloud/Internet,for my servers, but I don't rely on other peoples servers/internet, when it comes to back ups.
Also all of that is set to save to my servers, also my VMs/Virtual Machines/emulators,either run locally or in the cloud, but from my own servers, also when it comes to the Switch specifically, all you have to do is drag and drop files, but I have all that automated too/backed up, to my own servers and I can connect to them/push data to the console, anyway all of this can be automated, no big deal, I do the same thing with Steam too,I had an issue with Assassins Creed Black Flag one time, with my save file, so I'm never using anyone elses servers, anymore EVER,that was annoying, especially after playing the game for like 20 hours.
Anyway automating all of this stuff your self isn't hard to do.

"not super easy to change them (joysticks)".. "you MIGHT be able to open it up and change them".. "youre stuck with the bad joysticks if they break"...
Valve literally designed and built the steamdeck to be 100% fully user replaceable. In ability and in parts.. Valve teamed with Ifixit and released standalone joysticks (and many other parts) so anyone who had any issue whatsoever could buy the part and with a few screws and following official guides you could replace the joysticks (or screen, or frame, or ssd, or wifi card, or speakers, or battery......)
so where are you getting "might" and "maybe" with fixability of the steamdeck? it was literally designed to be able to be fixed in the future.. This is the FIRST console in the history of gaming who's company made it so you can fix your hardware with no bullshit attached to it..
"The switch has modularity.. you can buy new joycons or third party grips"
The steamdeck is literally a full x86 PC............. Which means you can buy any anything and plug it in or bluetooth it on.. including any controller from the millions of products that exist... wether it be usb or even stock controllers from legacy gaming consoles (with adapters to convert their proprietary plugs to usb).. there are a couple grips for the switch.. cool... There are literally millions of products that are compatible with pc..

The key difference in this comparison is that many of us already have an extensive library of triple-A games on Steam, and with the Steam Deck, we can enjoy replaying them and also take advantage of the numerous game sales on the platform. On the contrary, Nintendo Switch games tend to be quite expensive, and even older Nintendo games rarely go on sale. In my opinion, it's a no-brainer that the Steam Deck comes out on top in this battle.

Great video! I just wanted to share my experience with the Deck's battery life, as it varies quite a bit from yours.
I tend to play older AAA games and indies, so for me I usually get around 4 hours minimum, and 7-8 hours maximum. For example, playing Fallout New Vegas will get me 4 hours, while playing something like Stardew Valley will get me around 7.
Even with more intense AAA games, like The Witcher 3, I find myself getting about 3 to 3 and a half hours after tinkering with it. The only games that fall into the 2 hours or less range in my experience are newer AAA games like GoW and Spider-man.
Again tho, great video! I'll definitely be checking out the channel.
Edit: Also, to answer your question, I used the Switch's kickstand back in high school to play Mario Kart with a friend during breaks. Not the best experience, but better than nothing.

I’ve used the kickstand once for Mario Kart with friends on a car ride from NYC to Philly and then again to play some Street Fighter at a bar (I used the 8-BitDo 6-button pads for that). It’s a cool idea that would have been a lot neater back in middle school but maybe not the best for adult gamers.

Plus I'm in my car 8+ hours a day, Driving from site to site. I have some downtime at times and being able to continue a game where I left off at home in my car... Priceless! To me, it's a no brainer having the deck.

For me personally, I don't really see the point in buying a steam deck if I already own a Switch Oled. The only games I want to play handheld and on the go are games like the mario franchise, pokemon or zelda. Everything else I can just play on my Xbox series X or Ps5. In saying that though I have a switch Oled and have never played it in hand held and have never used the joy con's... mine went straight to the dock and I had two switch pro controllers ready to go
