I bought a generic USB-C dock and later a Jsaux 2.0 dock and neither of them worked with my 4k TV (sync/screen tearing on older Samsung). The SteamDeck Dock worked immediately and with a good refresh rate. The SD Dock also gets fimeware upgrades directly through the Steam Deck. Pretty neat! But yes expensive. The extra charger is worth it though, Jsaux borrows the original charger to operate.

It dynamically adapts the refresh rate of the monitor to the FPS of the game on the fly, reesulting in much smoother motion and fixes screen tearing without the additional inputlag of V-Sync.
Let me google that screen for you... "The C1 is a better gaming TV, with four HDMI 2.1 ports, support for variable refresh rate technology (VRR), and a 120Hz refresh rate."
VRR is effectively the same as FreeSync, FreeSync is just AMDs marketing term for it and on PC it was available first via DisplayPort.
VESA calls it VRR or VRF or VFR for HDMI ports on TVs and i think it is officially supported from HDMI 2.1 forward but best to look it up specifically to make sure.
Nvidia calls it G-Sync and has some proprietary modules in certain PC displays (like mine) but by now also allows FreeSync Monitors to work on Nvidia Cards. .... just not the other way around (which means i actually need to get a new Display if i want to use FreeSync ... well, with the next upgrade)
The Steam Deck Dock only has HDMI 2.0 ... i don't know if that will work for your screen.
But there is always a chance they add it later via Firmware Update, so make sure to keep an eye on those patchnotes.

Emulation. If there’s games from your childhood or you just want to try something retro that isn’t a priority for game devs to republish, that’s your only option (in most people’s practical terms). Sky’s of Arcadia for instance. I literally can’t buy it on for modern hardware. I own it but don’t want to have to play it on a Dreamcast, and all that entails.

When my Deck Dock arrived a week ago and I was setting it up with my 4k TV, I was shocked that the system gave me the option to crank it that far. I figured performance would be terrible so I set the system resolution to 1080p and all my games to the Native resolution setting to match. It's been a pleasant experience over all; I'm far enough away from the screen to not notice the lack of fidelity for the most part. I like it. Was expecting more from it… but it’s a PC interacting with a USB-C docking station. What more could it do? However, I’ve never had an issue with a Switch dock packed in my bag, sure the footprint is larger, but it’s still light enough to move around. It behaves with its Dock the same way an iPad (or any USB-C tablet) does while plugged into a dock. It offers a small chip to bump up the resolution and power going to the Tegra SoC. Where the Valve APU from AMD doesn’t change its behaviors at all, whether it’s plugged in or not… which is how a PC behaves. It’s apples to oranges in this case. Would you compare your iPad to your PC?
It’s really the brilliant side of Valve’s marketing on the Deck: call it a PC and not a console, then we don’t have to be stuck or chained. Also, anyone who’s worked on ANY computer knows this, change anything on the inside, the manufacturer will defacto blame your change. If my late 2018 Mac mini decides to go awry, I’m gonna have to pull out the 32GB Crucial RAM and put Apple’s back into it for coverage. I’m sure if I change out my 2230 drive in my Deck, then something goes wrong, Valve will tell me I broke it.
Whereas my console fails, that’s a manufacturer issue within their warranty.
Please note, I mean anything within the manufacturer’s warranty and not beyond.
Love the video. Still some of the best produced content comes from you as always

I completely agree with your conclusions. The Steam Deck Dock is the perfect extension to the flexibility that the functionality of the Deck provides.
However, Valve's openness in allowing the Deck to use any generic USB-C dock, let's people who don't want to shell out the $90 for the Dock+Charger also benefit from the work they've put into the docked experience.
I grabbed a JSaux dock like a week before the SDD dropped, but I don't feel like I'm missing out or getting a compromised knock-off experience. It perfectly fits my Deck with the Killswitch case, and playing Death Stranding at an upscaled 4K30 looked incredible, and was a lot easier to set up than getting my PC to run on the TV.

There's another use case for this dock: to use the steam deck as a computer. The steam deck is, no joke, more powerful than many people's computer and for the price is a great one. Having the dock on the desk connected to all monitors, ethernet and peripherals, makes you able to just arrive on your desk, plug a single cable and have your computer ready. Valve is sadly letting the desktop mode get behind in terms of updates, KDE desktop is already very outdated, but it's still a great computer for many. It's even awesome as a second computer in pair with your main one at your desk in many situations.
