Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten (February 28, 1960 - August 14, 1980), known professionally as Dorothy Stratten, was a Canadian Playboy Playmate and actress. Stratten was the Playboy Playmate of the Month for August 1979 and Playmate of the Year in 1980 and appeared in three comedy films and in at least two episodes of shows broadcast on American network television. She was murdered at the age of 20 by her estranged husband and manager Paul Snider, who committed suicide on the same day.
Stratten's death inspired two motion pictures, the 1981 TV movie Death of a Centerfold and the 1983 theatrical release Star 80, as well as the book The Killing of the Unicorn and the songs "Californication" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "The Best Was Yet to Come" by Bryan Adams, and "Cover Girl" by Prism.
On August 13, 1980 - the second anniversary of Stratten's first arrival in Los Angeles -Snider bought a used 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun from a private seller he found in a local classified ad. Later that evening in a conversation with friends, Snider described how he had purchased a gun that day and finished his story by cryptically declaring that he was "going to take up hunting." Snider casually brought up the subject of Playmates who had unexpectedly died; in particular, he spoke of Claudia Jennings, an actress and former Playmate of the Year who had been killed in a car accident the year before. Snider made several morbid remarks to his companions related to the problems at Playboy magazine caused by Jennings' death, including a comment about how the editors would pull nude photos of a dead Playmate from the next issue if there was time.
Stratten arrived for her meeting with Snider at his rented West Los Angeles house at approximately noon on Thursday, August 14. She had spent the morning conferring with her business manager, and one of the topics the pair discussed was the amount of the property settlement Stratten would offer her estranged husband that afternoon. The police later found $1,100 in cash among Stratten's belongings in the house, which she had apparently brought for Snider as a down payment. Towards the end of her morning meeting, Stratten's business manager made a fateful observation: that his young client could avoid spending any more time with Snider by handing off the remaining separation and divorce negotiations to her lawyer. Stratten replied that the process would go easier if she dealt with Snider personally, explaining that he was being nice about everything and finally adding, "I'd like to remain his friend."
Snider's two roommates had left in the morning, so the couple were alone when Stratten stepped into the house that she had shared with her husband until just a few months earlier. By all appearances, Stratten had spent some time in the living room, where her purse was found lying open, before she and Snider went into his bedroom.
By 8:00 that evening, both of the roommates had returned to the house. They saw Stratten's car parked out front and noted that Snider's bedroom door was closed. Assuming that the couple had reconciled and wanted their privacy, the roommates spent the next several hours watching television in the living room.
Alerted by Snider's private detective, the roommates entered the bedroom shortly after 11:00 P.M. and discovered the bodies of Stratten and Snider. Each had been killed by a single blast from Snider's shotgun. Both bodies were nude. According to the police timeline, Snider had shot Stratten that afternoon within an hour of her arrival at the house, then committed suicide approximately one hour after the murder.
Some time after midnight in the early morning of August 15, the private detective telephoned the Playboy Mansion and told Hefner that Stratten had been murdered. Hefner then called Bogdanovich. After collapsing at the news, Bogdanovich was sedated. Stratten's mother was told of her daughter's death at her Vancouver-area home later that morning by an officer of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Stratten's body was cremated and the remains interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park cemetery in Los Angeles. The epitaph on Stratten's grave marker includes a passage, chosen by Bogdanovich, from Chapter 34 of the Ernest Hemingway novel A Farewell to Arms. Three years after the murder, the author's granddaughter, Mariel Hemingway, played Stratten in Star 80, the Bob Fosse biopic about the doomed Playmate and her husband.

Very sad . I remember when this happened. Dorothy was offered security to protect her from Paul but she refused thinking he wasn’t dangerous. She wanted to keep it friendly and on good terms not realizing how deranged he really was .
The most dangerous time for an abused spouse or partner is when they decide to leave. This story is a reminder of what all of us are told; it must be a clean break & you never go back. Rest in peace Dorothy Stratton, you were young & beautiful..... No match for the evil that awaited you. Fly high Angel.

She and her pimp used one another and when it came time for her to trade up because she saw a better deal in Hollywood she was removed by him. She played a dangerous game and lost. It's sad, but she knew what she was doing.

This was so sad that this beautiful young girl lost her life at the hands of a monster. She came so far from home to be killed. I think her death caused the public to be so outraged that more people started to take more notice what was happening to young women at the time. It's eerie to me how Fosse filmed the murder scene from Star 80 in the same room where it happened.
Back in the mid nineties I came across some old Playboys that a friend had given me. One of them was the issue that was basically a tribute issue to Dorothy. I read her story and fell in love with her and was saddened like many by her ending. She had a angelic presence that was one of a kind. A real sweetheart spirit. I think she was destined for so many things...I'm actually kinda blown away they filmed "Star 80" at the actual murder house.

I have bought several of them, including the Playmate of the Year 1980 issue naming Dorothy Stratten playmate of the year and the one with Darva Conger on the cover which was the 20th anniversary of Stratten's death, inside....this issue pays tribute to Dorothy, featuring some of the photos from the 'Famous Blondes' pictorial that Dorothy was working on at the time of her death 😢

Did you know that the director Peter Bogdonovich that Dorothy fell in love with married her younger sister Louise Stratten 8 years after Dorothy’s murder? Louise was also 20 years old. They divorced in 2001. I think he was so in love with Dorothy that marrying her younger sister was the closest thing to the real thing for Peter. Very sad.
Allegedly, Nellie (Dorothy and Louise's mother) lived in L.A. with them at one point.

I went to that house in 2017 and it didn't look good at all. There was a different owner there at the time. It was not painted green and looked unkept.
Gave me chills knowing what happened there and all of that. I got bad vibes all around it. I have heard that Dorothy's mother has never been to her grave to see it, but
her younger sister did and that she ended up marrying Peter Bogdanovich at some point. I don't think the marriage lasted long.

She was so brave and beautiful, she tried so hard to get that monster out of her life but she couldn't escape his obsessive anger at her walking away from him. Such a sad ending to a promising young life.

Peter Bogdonovich passed away earlier this year and my first thought was “he’s with Dorothy again.” Hard to believe she was only 20 years old.

Peter married Dorothy’s little sister Louise in I believe 1988. Louise was 20 years old when they married. Kinda strange.

There is an article in People magazine about Peter Bogdanovich and his reaction to her death. It is heartbreaking. He ended up marrying Dorothy's sister. And Hefner was never the same. Not really. The movie Star '80 is well done but very upsetting to watch.

I use to service this home when I worked for a pest control company that I won't name. I did feel something strange each time I was there which I believe was every 2 months. I also service currently the home across the street form the Nicole Simpson Ron Goldman murder house on Bundy. Crazy
When I was driving for Lyft I used to drive in the same neighborhood where she was murdered. It always gave me the creeps. I used to purposely avoid trying to go in front of that house. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and there’s a lot of places like that here in Southern California that just give me the creeps.

@@janadeubner9883 Well, one of the scariest places for me was the old jail in Lincoln Heights in North East L.A. I grew in Lincoln Heights on Ave 26. As a kid me and some friends had always heard rumors about the old Jail being super haunted and noises being heard there when no one was inside. It’s also kinda of a historical place here in L.A. because its been used by so many production company’s to film movies there. One of the most well known that was filmed there was the original A Nightmare on Elm Street. All the scary scenes at the end of the movie where Nancy battles Freddy in her dream and she pulls him out were all filmed in the basement of the old jail. No kidding. That scary ass looking basement with the scary ass big red furnace in what looks like a fake movie set were all actually real. Me and some friends broke in there one day late in the afternoon and went down to the basement to see it for ourselves. And let me tell you…the hair on the back of my head stood straight up the whole time I was in that damn building. It was super scary. I think you can even look up documentaries about it on RUclips. American History X was filmed there also. Al Capone was a guest there when it was still a jail. And, all the real life events of the sleepy lagoon murders portrayed in Edward James Olmos play and movie Zoot Suite all took place inside that jail. We used to ride our bikes by that building all the time and it always gave us a feeling that we were being watched. It’s definitely one of the most haunted places in L.A.

I saw a documentary about Dorothy Stratten a few years ago. I remember thinking "WOW! Such a natural beauty!" Paul Snyder reminds me of James Woods character "Lester" from Casino! A leech and a lowlife! Such a tragedy and loss of an innocent soul.

As a cab driver in LA in the 80s-90s, I had occasion to bring passengers to the Playboy Mansion from time to time. It was well known in the taxi business to NEVER get out of the car for any reason. They had large dogs roaming freely who would attack without hesitation. There was always someone in front of the house to open car doors. Luggage in the trunk? You'd have to hand over your keys for them to remove it. It was Hugh Hefner's way.

Loved Dorothy Stratton. Boy, you were lucky that the new owners of the murder house were friendly. My friend and I went by a couple years ago and the owner came outside with his dog trying to scare us off. I said why do you live in a famous house if you don’t want people to come by. He didn’t have an answer. I mean I’m sure people stop by night and day, but if you move into an infamous house that is going to happen, whether you like it or not. And when you whip by the Playboy rock, you are so right we were out there taking pictures and leaning against the rock and we got yelled at at. Thanks again for another great video.

The Playboy Mansion has been completely remodeled by the new owner that you can't even tell its was there. They filled in the grotto, torn down the tennis courts, the fountain is gone, you name it, they did it. If you look on Google Earth, you can see all the work they're doing.

I remember seeing a movie about what happened to her, and you pegged Snider right, he was a dirtbag. He used Dorothy to try and make a buck. She was his meal ticket and he considered her his personal property and flipped when she wanted to leave him. He was a sick individual. It’s so sad she lost her life at his hands. She had such a bright, prosperous future, and Bogdanovich was so in love with her. It broke him in a way. Bless her soul. Thank you for covering this Scott with much respect.
