Converting a Marching Snare into a SNOM For

- This was a fun one! TJ had this old Pearl marching snare that he wanted to use on his drum set. So I converted it into a "snom" (snare/tom) I cut new bearing edges, rewrapped it, gave the hardware a good cleaning, and replaced some missing parts and added floor tom legs to it.

What was that new wrap called? It looks a lot like the wrap on my ltd edition pearl kit and I've always wanted to add another tom to it. The wrap on mine is called rainbow micro flake
Nice video
And beard
Hello @rdavidr,
May I know the background music thats playing while your unboxing the Snare?
How much would you charge to convert a marching snare into a snom?
I know im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a trick to get back into an Instagram account??
I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
Wow, with the bit of reverb that thing sounds HUGE.
Didn't expect to see you here!
It is huge
What are you doing here
Hi Colin! Really didn't expect to see you here. It's cool that we have more than one similar intrest 😁
It’s yuge
6:18 It looks like you're deep frying the tension rods lol
Do you mean to tell me you like yours uncooked?
@@TealTactics adds flavor
Lmaoooo I just got to that part. Now I'm hungry all of a sudden
Don’t EVER change the oil… they’ll sound wayyyy better.
@rdavidr what are you using to clean the tension rods and lugs/hardware?
Even though the original wrap was sick looking. The new one is awesome!
How are u here also
Are u a man of culture
1:06
"Dude there's no way we're gonna rewrap this thing"
um then you just... rewrap it? aight
It was because the wrap wasn’t in the best shape
i love pearl drums but i've never seen this before would kill to own one nice job Dave.
Pearl drums are my Favorite
Former managing editor of Drum! (#RIP). Big fan, and I say that as a guy who's been lucky enough to have a drink with Johnny Craviotto. Had I run into you about twenty years back, would have definitely pounded the table to get you involved. Keep up the outstanding work.
What does craviotto mean
@@STSGuitar16 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craviotto_drums
What're you up to these days?
You make these projects look so effortless
I wonder what would Dave look like without his huge beard.
honestly same
You should do a video on re-wrapping drums. A guide on how to do it, tips for the best way, companies you recommend buying wraps... The videos you have in which you rewrap drums, you just kind of mention it in passing.
i thought he has before ?
@@mist1066 Not really. At least nothing as in-depth
I've been watching him for years, and he's given quite a few really good tips on this
Steven Armstrong I agree, but like I said, nothing all that comprehensive.
Jerrid Foiles i think its pretty straight forward lol
4:20 just found my answer from the cheap snare upgrade video. What a great channel!!!!
So... I've butchered a drum or two in my day and I have to say what you make look so easy is in fact just the opposite. Wow! your attention to detail and the problem solving ability is appreciated by anyone who has every tried this sort of thing. You should be very proud. Thank you for sharing.
Sincerely,
Gabriel
Oh MAN. I had an old marching snare shell that I wanted to do this exact thing with. I then had kids and realized I’d never have time to work on it, so I got rid of the shell. I super regret doing that now after seeing/hearing this!
It took me way longer than I want to admit to realize that the sound I was hearing was the snare and not a sample. Wow. What a sound
Yeah, it sounds almost like an old Linndrum, incredible stuff.
Nice job! And wow that thing sounds great with the compression and reverb he put on it. That's one of the best sounding low-tuned snares I've heard.
" He is awesome drummer and KILLER human being." Oh no
¡I noticed too! 😅
I said the same thing to myself. I couldn't help but take it it literally
“He’s a killer human being”
Phrasing
I once had a Pearl 'Export' snare drum in the late 80's with the same throw-off system, and I remember it being rather terrible, so it doesn't surprise me this one did get replaced :-)
None of those lugs were broken?
I have a BLX kit, and literally half the lugs have broken fastening points, and they are the exact same style of lug.
Damn what was left from the center of the wrap could be used on a piccalo snare
David what is name of that wrap - looks amazing. Thanks!
Everything this dude touches turns to gold LOL. I would have never thought of doing this with a marching band snare. And that new finished is awesome. It's been a long time since I've seen black glitter. My kit is a PDP custom maple 7 piece with 14 + 16 inch floor Tom's. I don't use the 14 I think it's too small for a floor. But you gave me an idea to possibly convert it to a deep snare drum. Would like to try that someday.
Always good to watch these videos of yours information plus too cool thanks
That black finish is rediculous! Love it
Great job!
Wondering if u can do a video on how to cut your own bearing edges as shown in this video (different angles, etc) Thx
I've never seen a video of a Bass drum with snare wires on. maybe do that next?? Call it a Snass Drum
It sounds better than a LinnDrum SD tuned down! Nice job
nah
Posting on a Friday? Not a Saturday?
You got a very keen sense of the obvious aey?
TJ Hartmann sure like 10000 hertz. Painful.
Happy saturday everyone.
I was sad to see the old wrap go, but that new wrap is sexy as heck
Really digging the music and the editing of this video to it. Really fits and is well done. On top of that, just a cool project. Love it!
Bro I’ve been waiting for h to make a snom for ever finally!
The fattest snare I've heard
Hola como se llama ese plástico para forrar.
The old wrap was so pretty !
As a marching snare drummer I cry and cheer. 🙈
Got me motivated! I’m going out looking for a marching band snare.
I'm looking to start building some snare drums...what basic tools would you recommend?
ALWAYS ENTERTAINING. Thank You R David R.
for all of the INSPIRATIONAL Vids.
(btw: that bearing edge is phenomenal) nice touches.
Maybe you can make a subkick for your next video (that little tom/mic in front of some drums)
Sir David: idk if you are an great inspiration or a terrible influence. Either way I have TWO FREAKIN MARCHING SNARE DRUMS on the way to my house so.... I guess well see what happens.
Seriously I'm entirely inspired.
That is a killer fat snare, gee whizz, it's like how i make all my drum machine snare sounds, all phat as hell but with plenty bite. Good work.
What bearing edge should I do on a ‘60s Ludwig 15” marching snare with re-rings?
Hi
I love your channel and your ideas. I have a 1995 DW maple drums And I am tired with the color but I love the drums sound. Where do you found the drums wrap?
Please let me know.
Thank you
Im just hyped about new content of david like imma freak out when a new build comes out
What a wicked kit at the end, with those mean snares, and the might rototoms! Nice dark cymbal choices too. Nice conversion!
Olá nobre ! Belíssimo o seu trabalho. Feliz Ano Novo. Saúde, Luz e Música para você. Saudações.
I liked the "happy music" that's in most of the video's in the background way better
love that. I want to hear it tuned up!
Anyone know where I could get a drum wrap like this? I have a marching snare like this one which I would love to mod. Please, please, please lmk! 😁
Hey, what's the name of the self-adhesive film? Where did you buy it?
you are the best
It’s much better to get wooden dowel and plug the holes with wood vs epoxy filler.
Snagged a 14 in wide 10 in tall gretsch marching snare to use as a floor snom since I'm capped out on space in my room. Sounds legit like a floor tom. And only payed 30 for it cause the snare coils were messed up so the seller thought it was ruined.
Seems the size of the drum was never mentioned ... if I missed it, my bad ... but, I did watch this video and scrubbed through this twice.
A very nice job on the drum . I like your videos, but your buddy for whom you made the drum needs to stay with a Shriner's parade band.
That wrap looks exactly like the DW design series silver marine drum set wrap 🤔
I've done several of these with virgin Ludwig toms.
And now I just got a Keller classic Mahogany 14x14 to use with 12 coliseum lugs. Now to wait for DFD to get some twelve lugs hoops in.
Hello where can I get 12 hole rims? Snare I found in great shape except rims.
The lack of boom bap beats in this restoration.....is concerning Dave. :P
The heamtite-glitter black is so much more tasteful than the bucket of smashed-up clamshells....
Are you looking for Ludwig Standard snare with the same wrap as your set or a Ludwig Standard snare in silver?
Glue always! No double sided tape unless you plan on changing the wrap in the future.
Nice work!!
What frequence do you use in your ultrasonic machine?
great woro david. you should start your own drum company. im serious. happy drumming.
I don't like those cymbals at all. What processing was used on that snare drum?
Awesome...what strainer wires? How many strands? Thanks...!
Hello! What's the name of that material that you use to wrap and where can I buy it?
Great video btw
keep making all these videos!!, i really enjoy your work
I buy a refurbish old drum kits and ALWAYS take off the wrap, sand them down and stain them in a natural wood color. Almost every time, the volume and resonance increase by 10-15% once freed of the mass of wrap and glue. Sanding down the bearing edge to a sharper 45 degrees also helps considerably. It seems the reason drum companies insist on wrapping everything is to hide the quality of the crappy veneers they choose, even on top of the line gear. If you want maximum volume and resonance, buy natural, unwrapped wood kits.
Hey man I have a snare drum I want you to re-wrap but I don't know about the shipping meaning how to ship it
@rdavidr what is the backing track at 5:50 I can't find it anywhere even with Shazam?
@rdavidr Wrap Is Gorgeous 🤘🏼 🚀
I just realized that you no longer use your old beats that was in your vids from the longest time.
3:18 timing
Seeing a marching snare in your workshop after all these years just looks wrong
Saludos, donde se puede comprar ese tipo de envolturas, para mis tambores. Gracias
Anybody else noticed that one of the floor tom mounts facing the other way or just me?😂
that how pearl does it. Figured id make them "right"
@@rdavidr I see, keep it genuine lol
have you tried DIYing a "roto-tom". I'd be interested in that
Dave,I have a yamaha that needs to be done like this. Can I hire you for the job?
Any reason to install that leg bracket facing the opposite way as the others?
Great work again, but man the backing music sucks balls.
rdavidr video on a Friday night? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Yeah really
Do you remember that little drum kit I will buy that your you if sell it for 20 dollars
I highly prefer rdavidr's usual background music to the one in this video.
What is that first song tj was playing? Couldnt find it on his channel
Strange that a Pearl drum, most likely made in either Japan or China has such an odd piece of hardware. The screw size (#10 x 26tpi) is a rather obscure and rarely found British threading that was used on some older motorcycles in the 40s and 50s. Odd that it found it's way onto a drum. 7:38
The original leg mounts I was going to use were from some other random kit, they werent pearl
Good job and very nice Wrap! Is it Delmar Galaxy Sparkle? I don't really understand why you didn't entirely glue the wrap onto the shell ... Even if there are a lot of lugs and stuff attached to the shell there might be the risk of the wrap dampening shell resonance when it's not completey connected to the shell ... maybe. Cheers
Ah, just watched til the end. Looks more like a Black Glitter or Black Sparkle Wrap now, nice anyway! ;-)
This hurts as a marching percussionist. It looks great tho 👍
@rdavidr what is the color of that new wrap called, and where can I get it?
What’s the music from 1:51 to 4:22? I really love the tune
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING WORK BROTHER......I've been wanting a marching drum snare for awhile now but just can't seem to find the right one for me......I LOVE the floor Tom leg idea....that is absolutely BRILLIANT...I'm stealing that and WILL incorporate that into mine when I get it. Thank you for showing that.
You did a hell of a nice job on this. You are definitely a master of your craft oh, I'm sure one of many....Hahaha
Great episode, beautiful build, I'm sure he was stoked when he saw it.....I'm going right now to find out for myself.
Take care,
~Jonny5🥁
So, let’s make that royal blue foil wrap!
Are you sending any drum just drums please let me know
You got that tension rod cleaner thing at the end, congrats david!
That is one sexy-ass looking and sounding drum!
I have the exact same marching snare in black, could I pay you to convert it into a snom??
hit me up on ig @davidraouf
It sounds like an electronic drum
Where do you buy the wraps for your drums?
