    00:26 Backup User Folder
    00:44 Time Machine Downgrade
    01:26 Recovery Partition Downgrade
02:34 Create Bootable USB Drive with Desired macOS for Downgrade
04:23 Modify T2 Mac Security To Allow for External Disk Booting
05:10 Reboot to Bootable USB Drive
05:33 Open Disk Utility and Wipe Drive
    06:10 Install MacOS
    06:50 Copy Back User Files
OPTION 1: Time Machine Backup Downgrade
You Have a Time Machine Backup of the Previous macOS you want to go back to. Please Note: You must manually backup all new files you created on Big Sur to an external drive before proceeding with a Time Machine Restore.
How to Restore with Time Machine Backup with Previous MacOS:
    1. Reboot into Recovery by holding Command + R on Startup
    2. Choose Time Machine Backup and Select the Backup to restore from.
    OPTION 2: Recovery Partition Downgrade
Boot to Recovery Partition - Options Below:
    Command + R
Reinstall the latest macOS that was installed on your Mac (recommended).
    Option + Command + R
Upgrade to the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
    Shift + Option + Command + R
Reinstall the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.
OPTION 3: Create Bootable USB Drive with Desired macOS Downgrade
You have no Time Machine Backup. Copy User Files off to an external drive. Please Note: All Apps and Files will be wiped with this process, so make sure to backup what you can.
    1. Make note of all your Apps (Take A Pic of Apps Folder) and Copy any Serial Numbers or Required Info from within the App.
    2. Copy whole User Folder to External Drive. Some Apps can be copied this way as well, but I prefer to reinstall all apps.
    3. Download the MacOS you want to go back to.
    4. Create Bootable macOS Installer Media.
    5. Reboot into Recovery by holding Command + R on Startup
    * T2 Macs will require modifying the Security to allow booting to older macOS.
    6. Boot to External Drive - Choose Disk Utility and Wipe the Root Drive
    7. Install macOS Catalina
    8. Restore User Files and ReInstall Apps

Such a big help! I choose the first option you did, it looked slightly different. I'm using a MacBook Pro 13, not sure if that had anything to do with it but it all resulted to the same. I decided to downgrade straight back to Catalina within 30 mins of upgrading to Big Sur, which I can't stand. Now I have a problem, the "other" storage on my Mac is at 120gb which was 33gb before and after the first upgrade. Any help on how I can reduce this without wiping my entire Mac? Thanks!!

You show copying user folders on to backup drive and return, I got that part. Can you do the same with the Apps folder? After the Downgrade install can you just copy the apps folder into the new partition as well? or will it require a clean re-install of all Apps. I went back fro BigSur crap to Catalina. I do have a Previous Catalina Apps Backup, can I copy that onto the Catalina Partition Apps Folder. Great explantion by the way

excellent video thanks, i had bootable Catalina USB but it wouldn't let me pick the Macintoch HD to install on, only after creating a second APFS Volume it did, but then i ended up with Dual-boot MBP. Cool but not sure if this the amounts to extra errors on Catalina i now notice in the system.log.
After watching your tutorial i see that it is possible to wipe the HD first. Didn't work with me but might have gone about it wrong. Need to give it a 2nd try.
The encryption is on, so not sure if T2 will allow the wipe, and also not sure what happens when encryption is turned off, as in, will data/disk be available straight after i turn it of or does all the the data need to be decrypted before anything.

thank you so much for this, I just got a late 2014 MacBook pro 15 inch, I happily use it on Catalina for a while, then I decided to upgrade to Big Sur because why not, did so, I hated everything about it, mostly the UI design, but I kept using it, besides for the UI it worked fine, but then I started having all sorts of problems, too many to count here, but the major ones are:
    1. unexpected kernel panics
    2. unexpected shutdowns
    3. it getting way too hot
    4. applications crashing or freezing
    5. applications refusing to open
    6. the entire system freezing
    7. the entire system freezing and causing a kernel panic
I know for a fact it wasn't any of the software I had, as I had them before the upgrade and had them on my old 2009 MacBook (which funnily enough, is way more reliable with 10.13, an unsupported OS)
I just really hope this fixes all my problems, if not, I'll just be happy with the better looking UI.

Hey Dude, many thanks for explaining how to downgrade. I went from Mojave to Big Sur, then to Monterey and everything just slowed down, and some of my external USB drives wouldn't work, so I decided to go back to Mojave which I found to be better. I read how to downgrade on Macworld but it wasn't a success. I've also watched other youtube vids, but I just couldn't get it to work. Your explanation helped me to make the switch back. But I think I have a problem.
I originally had /Container/Mac HD..... and then another Mac volume. When I reinstalled Mojave from the USB drive I was given the option to install on MacHD or Update. I chose MacHD. Everything got installed but I got a message saying - incompatible. But it all started up Ok, and it all works. However, I can't see my Mac HD anymore, only 'Update' (Drive or volume) ? I'll call it the update drive, which has a few folders and some files that I don't recognise in it. I'm thinking maybe I should have chose to install on the Update volume ? Would that have given me back the Mac HD in its own container ?
I migrated from the Microsoft Windows environment about 4 months ago, so it's all a bit strange for me. I have a 27" iMac. As you will probably know, things are done very differently here than on Windows.
Q: Should I wipe the HD again and re installed from the USB stick ? A big thanks once again, and if you have any advice for me.

I am having problems because I can't seem to get Catalina on my usb drive. I am typing in the right commands in my terminal, but it's not working. It says it is not not a valid mount point. And I transferred the Catalina installer to my flash drive. And I also created a new volume for my Catalina installation. But it keeps saying it is not a valid mount point. And I am not sure on what to enter in the terminal after the createinstallmedia --volume. Mine looks like this: --volume /Volumes/MyVolume. But I don't know on what to put where it says Volume and MyVolume. Okay so I need help here. Also, do I need to put a single dash after create install media command? And the name of my flash drive is called just Catalina. Okay, so I need help with this. Because it's not working for me. Okay so thanks a lot.

I’m trying to time machine downgrade to Catalina but I noticed that you clicked the macOS Version 11.0 isn’t that still Big Sur? I need 10.15 for Catalina. Or are you still are you still clicking macOS Version 11.0 for a downgrade to Catalina?

I don't know why apple released this update to begin with. It clearly wasn't ready. Anyway, thank you for helping us out!

My original software was Yosemite. I tried the recovery and my hardrive wasn't shown as an option. I hate Big Sur. I want it gone.
Thank you for the video. Well done

Do any of these methods restore the EFI firmware? (I know the time machine restore does not...)

Hey Mike. No they do not wipe a Firmware Password if set or any EFI Settings. An Internet Recovery Wipe can remove the Recovery Partition, but not Firmware.

I used the create bootable version on external drive. I did slightly different though. 1. I copy/pasted the code from website link into terminal instead of dragging installer.
    2. When trying to wipe the drive (5:49) like you by entering Macintosh HD and hit erase nothing happened. Also there was a lot of shadow gray like there was still information somewhere even though my drive has been erased multiple times trying all kinds of methods. So I just picked the Macintosh hd -data (underneath container disk 1) and that seemed to erase everything leaving 971gb of free space and it created new disk. Then exited. This time I found my hard drive as an option to install Catalina on where before there were no choices of hard disks. It was just blank underneath the Catalina installer with a slight distortion like something was there but not selectable.

Please make sure either the volume or the disk itself is mounted. Select the disk then check the mount/unmount button next to erase. Mount it if it's not, it may ask for admin password if filevault is enabled. Now you can erase.
