  • Explore Hill House with us, an abandoned Victorian castle mansion of a millionaire. Follow us as we journey through its ruins and the surrounding out buildings, the story of its owner’s shocking death and its uncertain future today. This rare example of an abandoned Gilded Age American castle is not to be missed.
    This video is dedicated to the memory of Chris Bowman, who joined us as a good friend and local guide in the episode “Shudder Island.” You are sorely missed.

    I am an Urban Explorer or "urbexer", photographer and RUclips creator with an academic background and passion for history, Cultural Anthropology and English with a focus on Celtic Studies. I grew up in a creepy looking 1800s home that later became the abandoned "haunted house" of the town. In 2016 I made the decision to start photographing and capturing on video these abandoned locations that I explored until then as a hobby. My recent focus has been on once great mansions, asylums and lost places. Currently I travel across the US, UK and Ireland to allow you to experience these places through me. I hope you enjoy the journey as we shine a light upon these forgotten places.

      @@DesertifyUrbex - Definite cool to see the plans, and the old photos are awesome! Really gives a feel for the place, two libraries, four bedrooms off the second floor one. Don't know if it's the music, the architecture, the era, the ruin, the black&white photos, broken wood, or what, but I have difficulty imagining parties and laughter. It just seems so v-a-c-a-n-t. And sold to the city, sheesh. Leave it to bureaucrats to decay stuff and trash it. Curious that part of it is stone, and a lot of it is brick. Was the brick a later addition / expansion?

    • @DesertifyUrbex
      @DesertifyUrbex  5 лет назад +1

      I think the brick is sort of the fabric, where as the stone is more of an outer layer or facing. It's very true that after being built the owner hated it and sold it, so it was unloved from the start.

      It's pretty shocking how fast water water can be a building killer. I understand roof leaks started and eventually led to a complete and sudden collapse of all floors, maybe 10 or so years ago. If not maintained I have noticed that the lifespan of a house is at most 30 years if it's wooden, often much less. They vanish so quickly on us.

    We enjoyed your film as always.We appreciate you took the time to give some of the history of this incredible home. Point of interest. Water towers are exactly that,water in a tower. Still used in most of America today & the world. Water is driven by gravity. Water towers were usually built near a water source. Water was pumped by a windmill or other mechanical device to get the water into a. high tank. Water was then delivered by gravity to the home and drained by gravity to a septic tank.🖤

    Ms. Sanford, did not invent or contributed to motion pictures. In 1890 an artist, and early inventor of the motion movie camera goes to Mr. Mr. Louis Le Prince, who disappeared mysterious, on his way to present his invention. Con Man Edison took the credit for his invention. His documents and invention, also vanished. I strongly believe there was fowl play resulting in his demise. Vandalism at its best!!!! This is beyond sickening!! Your video was wonderful 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I’ve shown this video to my father who is a master Carpenter from Italy. He confirmed what I knew. Even uninhabited for over 200 years this place wouldn’t look this bad off. Unless a tornado hit it. The Materials used were top of the line, and would stand the test of time. What’s done is done, it’s just a sin that this place could still be a wonderful place to visit if not for teenagers, and people with nothing to do.

      Good catch on the snow. We often record ahead a few videos so we have a stream of content that is uninterrupted. This means we release videos that are a season or two off sometimes. The mansion has been hit hard by graffiti recently and I can never get over how easily it could be saved. I see mansions in Ireland every year being restored that are in much worse condition. I am looking forward to "travelling" with you. You do such a great job. I unsubscribed several mths ago to all videos abt viewing historical building because I hated not knowing anything about them.
      I watched a video about Cabins in Keddie Calif. The Mother & 10 year old son talked about being scared if the got caught. She tried to break into a cabin that had new appliances inside & a new Hot Water Heater on the patio. There were 4 murders in a cabin that is no longer there (torn down because of vandalism.(NOT because there were murders in it). In one cabin she stated she wished she had brought a pen to add graffiti on inside walls. The Cabins are all privately owned now. The Resort went broke so all the cabins were not being used until the bought. And many are being renovated now. There are NO Trespassing signs EVERYWHERE. When I stopped watching the video. I researched Keddie Resort then I made 4 comments about her trespassing. ect. I was so angry and her teaching her son that it is OK to trespass & break the law.

Within, its walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone. The masonry and skill of the men who did it ,give this house a fraction of a chance of savior.the masonry appears solid..this place could be stripped to the masonry,and rebuilt with modern amenity's, plumbing and electrical would be relativerly easy.you could demo this house down to not a scrap of trash or leftover pieces.bulldoze and re grade the exterior.and approach this as a new construction build.we all know the hardships and pain of a remodle or renovation.the poisonous air particles,the smells,the difficulties... You could not experience these things if done the right way.build the new exterior walls against the masonry and attach with brackets and tapcon screws.I think you could put up a vapor\weather barrier between the 2 .and better yet I reallly think that if you left a one inch gap between wood and masonry,that you could spray expanding insulation foam over brackets and all interior masonry and it would conform to the pockets in the masonry and studs and adhere the two together and make a massively strong system acting as a single unit...you could attach lstteral bracing diagonally from floor to ceiling screwed directly onto the studs underneath a 1\2inch sheetrock. I don't think that it would cost any more than a regular new home construction for that area.the mony you save on materials for a comparative brick or stone exterior,you would spoend on prepping,cleaning,and added cost of extra spray foam,as well as unseen expenses.I think they would balance out.and you would actually come out cheaper if you were to try to replicate the same stonework similar to how it is.so you would have that added value .
    On a different not its a crime for the city to demolish most or any of it....they should pay the small amount it would cost to shore it up with steel bracing,a few girders ,a little concrete.then clean it all up and remove all the danger.there's no danger from any of that masonry falling with just a few strategic braces.if they don't have budget to rebuild or restore,then stabilize it for cuter generations or prospective visionary's or donors that will.don't be so naive to think you are doing any of your citizens some favor by demolishing it for their own safety.what would the world do without such a thoughtful safety minded government demolishing historic structures,and past history.nobody would live long without their thoughtful intervention.this is exactly what government should never do.they should always on the other hand do what I previously mentioned.they have it all backwards..and whoever lives under this local governments watchful eye and jurisdictions should be taking a long thought of how to redirect it back on coarse in the direction that a correct government should be....its a problem all over america.Europe has a much better grasp on it than us an tends to do the right actions.and they have thousands of years of architectural history,and we act reckless towards our brief and almost non existent history.we should be searching for every bit we can to preserve ....at least beyond the wrecking ball...and basically shore it up or safety improvements and just leave it the hell alone....I would actually rather things to be dangerous for the few brain dead idiots ,put a large sign in front telling of dangers,and leave it the hell alone.let people choose their risk levels(to an extent,without making things dangerous for the smart people that will have to rescue them)govt. Stay involved,but never overly involved .don't let people in power who care not about history and who normally developers,businessmen,or have ties to them ,make decking ball decisions....

      Thank you. you seem very knowledgeable on construction and remodeling and have validated my theory that this is preservable and even usable in a new building. The local government keeps attempting to destroy this building, I feel possibly to hide the visible blemish of their mismanagement. They have allotted a significant amount of funds for the demolition, which to me seem more than the cost of preservation. Maybe a deal between friends? The whole thing is a shame and never would have happened in Western Europe as you say.

      @@DesertifyUrbex good point with the visible blemish.you might be right on the friends thing to.you would be surprised how many small county's just in the state of Georgia where I'm at,are doing the same thing.they just demolished 4of the best old high school gymnasiums.they had already built replacements for years ago.and the town has a terrible shortage of gyms.my sons basketball team was only allotted one hour every other week.yet they for down the most historic beautiful hardwood floors and wooden bleachers,huge high ceilings from the 30s.in their place they did nothing.no reason to do it.just a field.but the same construction company always seems to win the bid to do the overpriced unnecessary work.I'm best friends with the brother of the owner of the construction co.he spilled the beans on the huge kickbacks and timeshare in Hawaii he gives the city clerk in charge of saying and picking the contract winner.its never even the lowest bid...so its probly happening there.I've been building and remodeling houses for 35 years and I feel pretty confident about my earlier thoughts.especially about shoring it up and cleaning up and making safe for the public maybe a little bulldozer site work and grading.all could be done I'm sure ,even without knowing their demolition costs they have allotted publicity may be the thing that could save it....big publicity...

      @@ericgriffinthefirst I have hoped this mansion would be noticed more by historians, and get as you say more publicity. It's part of my reason for recording them, that and of course that they are bulldozed and the record lost. I deal with bids often in my work outside of these videos, and what you're saying sounds about right. the end winner can often be interestingly predictable...
