STORY
Explore the abandoned palace of the once prominent Cabral family, deep in the heart of Portugal. Built-in the early 1800s, this grand home was a symbol of the family's immense wealth and influence earned through government and inherited old money.
As the late 19th century rolled around, the Cabrals turned their focus towards the production and sale of wine. At its peak, the palace was home to a large number of family members, but as the younger generation began to live independently, the size of the household and the importance of the family dwindled.
Join us as we uncover the history of the Cabral family's rise to power and their ultimate decline. Discover how this grand family, who once lived in luxury, fell into obscurity and oblivion after four decades of abandonment.

I wish someone would save these antiques…even if they were stolen instead of destroyed…the history and craftsmanship is beyond what people make nowadays. It truly hurts my heart that they will one day be a part of the decay.😟

I think its a duty to save all that is old and in danger of decay : otherwise it will get lost, knowledge, design, books.....its needs to be saved badly ! Give it to a museum or sell to some rich guy who wants it - as long as it doesnt get lost in time , with time
One thing that truly baffles me is why all the art and antiques and so many things from the many places you've been are just left behind! Being very curious and with a child like enthusiasm I am in awe but also so perplexed as to why things are just left. Wouldn't museums and antique collectors want to purchase some of these amazing and no longer available pieces
Its obvious that antiques collectors would be interested in buying them, but the home owner obviously arent interested in selling them. And I totally understand why, this items are one of a kind... Who in their right mind would want to sell such treasures?😅

Watching these videos, I’m intrigued but it reminds me all the things we buy while on earth doesn’t matter when we leave this earth… probably in this instance They didn’t want to depart or sell items.
The mirror in the room with the 🦇 flying around was absolutely beautiful. I'm not going to lie, it probably under mysterious circumstances, wind up in the trunk of my car 🤣

I don't understand how a family could not try and preserve at the very least, the paintings of the family members, or have an estate or auction sale, or let someone else go in years ago and preserve this old beauty. Thank God, you have done that with your videos
I CANNOT conceive family members not wanting to preserve this home and it's treasures. Maybe because the family is rich and I'm poor? What a waste of beautiful things. I don't understand it.

Probably had no concept of how hard it is to actually get money.
Lack of money and time is the only two reasons I can think of. It's very sad but not everyone cares...
@@tammywilhidewilhide2832 A house that old would need new wiring, plumbing and lead paint removal. It generally costs 30% more to rebuild a house than it would cost to tear it down and build a new one. That's because of the amount of time it would take to open the walls to run the pipes and wires. Bathrooms and the kitchen would need to be gutted and appliances installed. Floors, walls and ceiling would need to be stripped and painted.
Caladryl is for poison oak or poison ivy. It’s anti itch stuff. Here in the U.S. it is also called Calamine Lotion. I grew up on a 4000 acre ranch about 30 miles North of Santa Barbara where lots of poison oak grew. I often had to use calamine lotion as a kid, because we hiked a lot.
I think it's a con. Never did anything to help. I used to put layer on layer of calamine lotion on - and curse it. Itch never seemed to reduce at all.
I'd scratch until it bled and then put metho on. Rather it STUNG than itched!
Yes we use it for mosquito bites and insect bites or even viral rash like chicken pox/ shingles or measels, every house has calamine lotion in Australia.
It's used also for hives and chicken pox sores to relieve the itch. Im in Australia .

Its just so unbelievable that this house is certainly filed with precious & expensive antique furniture and its just sitting there! and in great condition too...why wouldn't they sell it before moving on? why is the town allowing it all to go to waste? wow
That bench is called a cane back settee. I'd say, $2,500-3,000 USD. It looks like it's excellent condition. Can you imagine if it was cleaned up!

I admire what you do when exploring old building and items in those people who left them there. You know your stuff . You have respect for the items. Just be careful when exploring. Since the house is Not really stable. Floors may give way. Ceiling may drop. Etc.

An absolutely wonderful Portuguese palace! There isn't one single item that someone could not be fascinated by! Exquisite wooden carved furniture, precious ceilings and altar!

Love the fact, the history of the families are included in the visits to these wonderful properties.
This is so sad! That altar should be in a museum. Such ornate, beautifully crafted woodwork and so many paintings left to rot. It's just heartbreaking. All these old homes just abandoned. I can't imagine being so rich you can just discard things of such value while huge populations of the world suffer from hunger and poverty.. It's like the rich would rather their possessions die with them instead of leaving them to strangers that might benefit from their sale. It's maddening and senseless.

I noticed in the first bathroom you went into, the room with the tub; the ceiling had fallen, yet there was nothing on the floor.
And the kitchen wood cook stove was hooked up to a hot water heating system. The stove heated the water. Beautiful craftsmanship on everything. This is such a shame that unwanted homes of this magnitude are not salvaged by the locals to benefit them. 💔

Thank you Lesley and Danny for sharing this unusual castle with all of us. The ceilings are so vast, the carvings on the furniture so unique, particularly the beds with the grape vines. The family seems very interesting. The wine press room was beautifully made, reminded me of a monastery with the huge casks/barrels, so very different.

Very funny that I also grew up with a neighboring rancher named Joey Cabral. He was a good friend of the family and an excellent horseman. People often brought their horses to Joey to train. These were cattle ranches so they were trained for that.
This was absolutely amazing!!! I can’t even express how much I love the furniture and ceilings, etc . They don’t make furniture and homes and appliances like they use to….everything was built to last!!! Thank u so much for taking us on this explore. It was beautiful. Can’t believe how tidy this place remains after so much time. Beds are still made, no graffiti, not many personal items left behind (books, etc) so beautiful!

What a beautiful & grand old house!! I love how you guys appreciate the architecture, the attention to detail in the wood carvings of the furniture, the ceilings in stained glass. I was a little disappointed that you guys didn't open all the doors upstairs and look in those trunks! I know it was hot but my curiosity would have gotten the best of me. I would have had to have looked in every room and all the trunks! Also that armoire that opened itself I would have had to open the door all the way and look in!

My jaw dropped seeing the cabinets, chairs, tables, vanities, and the design of the carving. Houses & Castles built in the 1800s to 1900s are 100% durable real wood. Great job guys! Be safe.

Mut agree that the furniture is so exquisite and uniquely done! The dining rooms chairs were out of this world, and just seeing all of this needing to just be left behind to be ruined and destroyed with time, pains anyone who loves antiques. Could be a delight to the soul of a family deserving of receiving them s thy would have respect for them So sad the government does not make sure that furniture is taken for the good of others, before it is too late Thank you Lesley and Danny for this tour of the mansion of a Royal Cabral family. It certainly was aa lovely home and am sure all those who got to live her even if They were working in the home physically each day, were blessed by this opportunity, Not everyone would be lucky enough to have the rights to a house like this one!
Some years back I came across a beautiful abandoned mansion in Northern Portugal. The mansion looked to be from the 1800s. My father was with me and started speaking with the local who looked after the property. Turns out, that mansion belonged to a Portuguese family who made their fortune in Brasil, moved back to Portugal and had that mansion built as their home.

I just love you all from The Bros of Decay, you are respectful of everything. I like that you added the servants quarters because they were very important to keeping the homes in order and should not be ignored. You all are so respectful to all of the homes, you have brought life back to happiness from the sadness. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!!! 😊

The open carved pillars on the altar are especially magnificent as is the rest of it! The carved capitals of the headboards and matching dressers, armoires are also fantastic!!., in the early drone video the roof looked like it was still in very good shape so I was surprised to see so much of the ceiling plaster had fallen, exposing the lath above! thanks for the peek into this palace.
I love the respect and awe you have for the house and items. I saw another one of this house and unfortunately since it was night I don't think your attic tour showed the amazing books and sheet music they found in the larger attic space.
It's so sad to see, not only the decay of the house, but the loss of the irreplaceable artwork and furniture.

That was Fun. The house would make a classic Hollywood haunted house movie- the doors creaking, cobwebs, old mirrors, carved faces everywhere, thick dust, bats-classic!
It’s so sad to see such beautiful furniture rotting with nobody to love and care for it. Shame.
That's a beautiful and well preserved house. It appears that someone is looking after it to some extent because plaster that has fallen from the ceiling is not on the floor or furniture so someone must have cleaned up.
What a magnificent home this must have been in it’s day. Even after all these years you can still easily imagine what it looked like.

The loveseat/bench’s woven holes is called caning. Dining tables have leaves that extend to allow for extra seating. The altar carving is reminiscent of carvings done by a German, Lieman Rieminschneider. (I am guessing at the spelling.). The armoires in servants’ quarters were often built with four flat sides and a top, for easy transport, then the sides were fastened together with hook and eye latches.
Well done! I am amazed the furniture pieces have not be auctioned off to antiques dealers.

Deram o nome Brasil. E ainda hoje temos várias famílias Cabral por aqui. Cabral é um sobrenome quase comum para nós. Moro em uma cidade que ainda tem muito desta cultura portuguesa. Os azulejos, e móveis esculpidos deste mesmo modo, todos vindos de Portugal. Até as pedras nas calçadas e ruas. Temos um amor incrível por tudo isto. Faz parte de nossas reminiscências. Está no nosso sangue. Uma mistura de brasilidade, índios nativos e portugueses. É muita riqueza cultural. Meu sobrenome tbm remete a esta ancestralidade portuguesa os Ferro Lima. Assim como muitos outros que se encontram aqui, todos descendentes dos portugueses. E Cabral é um nome muito especial para nós. Ótima exploração. Valeu!! Muito grata. 🙏🏻❤🇧🇷

I am your new fan Leslie. Your a great story teller of those who abandoned their homes in with European mansions and homes, which were built last compared to the USA, although. I like how to tie in the history of families in Europe who are now gone.
