So when you cough out water - the most of it will go through the valve, not through the top. Many decades ago I took a scuba diving class during my brief stay at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. The first exercise was bobbing up and down facing the pool's side wearing a mask. Everyone had some degree of panic. I appreciate swimming's lack of stuff; a suit if you are dressing formally and goggles if you want to open your eyes in that dilute bleach solution. Tomorrow i will try blowing out while under to see if that makes a difference. I can't do flip turns yet but will practice, once i can learn to swim with the snorkel. I'm not going to use nose plugs because i don't want to die!!! I don't like them at all. I have cardiovascular issues, so i get out of breath easily. Nose plugs put me in shear panic mode. This is an old post, so not sure if my reply is worth anything, but I find this, as well. I expel when the snorkel starts taking on water, and sometimes that helps. After a few dozen laps, I tend to stop altogether and remove the snorkel, dunk it in water and blow the water out as forcefully as I can. That will last for another dozen laps.

I am a new swimmer and can only do the breaststroke. I bought a snorkel (TYR 2.0 Ultralite Snorkel) to help me learn the motions of freestyle (I alternate 1 breaststroke lap with one freestyle kick lap). I was unable to breathe with the snorkel. It does not have a purge valve either. I am not sure how to breathe with it. Does anyone have any suggestions, methods or instructions that might give me a better understanding on how to breathe properly with it? I find it hard to pull air in and I am not sure how to balance my breathes. I was told a snorkel with a purge valve might help, not just to expel water but to allow or the air to enter without too much pressure in the tube. Do you still breathe in from your mouth and out from your nose (unless clearing tube)?
I’m taking lessons, and my instructor recommended that I get one. She told me not to try it until she shows me how. I have my lesson today. I will come back afterwards and let you know what I find out. 🙂
It that happened to me since i get use of the water inside my nose. Just try to consentrate to breed in from the snorkel and breed out from your noze inside the water abviously, like that you will avoid to swollow alot of water.😉👍 Good Luck.
Oh really? I didn't know that.. I was joking about the Ironman comment. Swimming is probably my weakest discipline, but slowly getting better with time and practice.
I tried a snorkel for the first time in training yesterday, and after a quite panicky first 200m of a 3x400 set, I ripped it off and am here wondering whether it was me or the snorkel 😂
My lower back has been destroyed after fighting in Afghanistan and my hips so imbalanced. This swimmers snorkel has let me swim laps for endurance. When I don’t use the snorkel, my back muscles get so tight when I try to breath that my neck muscles get stiff and I have to cut the swim short. The snorkel is money.
I'm so gutted. I bought a snorkel for practicing my stroke and then I got to my local pool and I'm not allowed to use it! It's the same for the national swimming centre in Stirling too! I'm so annoyed! I'm desperate to use my new toy! :'(
@@gtn I'm not too sure of their reasons to be honest. But I have read from other people on the Internet that the life guards cannot tell if you are drowning face down in the water. Not sure if this is true though.
Same at the Rebecca Adlington pool in Mansfield. First day out and got told by lifeguard they are not allowed during public sessions, so that's me done. 😞
So long as I am usin a snorkel, my body position is ok. When I start breathing, my body position is destroyed. For me swimming with a snorkel is an end in itself, while the real difficulty is to deal with proper breathing.
I used a snorkel for the first time ever today and felt like I was drowning. I felt water going up my nose all the time. I kept taking breaths through my mouth and expelling hard through my nose but it felt really awkward. Is this sonething I need to get used to? Or am I doing something wrong?
I'm finding using a snorkel great for neck limitations that I have, but as a new at swimming laps now and trying to loose weight, I am looking for instruction on how to "breathe" correctly while swimming laps as my cardio goes up and my need for oxygen increases. I seem starved and out of breath. I have bought several snorkels now even full face ones that have valves to allow fresh air in and pushes all the cO2 air out a different way as to not be breathing CO2 back in like a straight snorkel does. I am assuming that I probably need to try and pace myself to a slower pace. Is there a video that either you know of or can make showing how to combine using a Snorkel and swimming at the correct pace to not get O2 starved?
how do you make a flip turn, when i do, the snorkel fills with water, and i know u r supposed to blow hard, but its never enough and i end up swallowing water

thank you very much@@thkatandi
I don’t know how you can use a snorkel without a nose plug, I tried once and it didn’t go well...the life guard looked over to see who was drowning😂
A nose clip does help for the tumble turns.
😂😂
same, I tried us no a snorkel once at practice, it wasn’t working, so I put it away 😂
hopefully I can get a nose clip soon
It that happened to me since i get use of the water inside my nose.
Just try to consentrate to breed in from the snorkel and breed out from your noze inside the water abviously, like that you will avoid to swollow alot of water.😉👍
Good Luck.
How do you flip turn with these?? The water dont go to the pipes?
You do power excale after a flip and water will pop out of pipe.
Exhale*
Perfecto 😍
I have trouble using it. Somehow water went inside me through nose and i start coughing badly hmm
I tried swimming with a snorkel today and I feel like I can‘t breathe and I panic. Is that normal? What can I do about it? :(
My snorkel is really loose how to i tighten it?
My local pool has just banned them. Possibly after seeing me swallow water. Wish I had seen this first! Thank you
Oh no :0
Are these Ironman legal? Will certainly eliminate my breathing issues 🙈
You won't be able to use these for a race - sorry!
😂
Not for Ironman but legal for USAT rules races.
Oh really? I didn't know that.. I was joking about the Ironman comment. Swimming is probably my weakest discipline, but slowly getting better with time and practice.
I am not yet used to the breathing thru the mouth thing, what's the technique to that?
Bilateral Breathing or Dying with a Snorkel?
@@thkatandi thru the snorkel. Kept rushing to breathe in the middle of the water
I tried a snorkel for the first time in training yesterday, and after a quite panicky first 200m of a 3x400 set, I ripped it off and am here wondering whether it was me or the snorkel 😂
Just what I needed!! I bought a snorkel today lol 😂
Perfect timing :)
What kind did you get?
Mark Yeager I got the Finis one that’s what most of our club use
My lower back has been destroyed after fighting in Afghanistan and my hips so imbalanced. This swimmers snorkel has let me swim laps for endurance. When I don’t use the snorkel, my back muscles get so tight when I try to breath that my neck muscles get stiff and I have to cut the swim short. The snorkel is money.
I'm so gutted. I bought a snorkel for practicing my stroke and then I got to my local pool and I'm not allowed to use it! It's the same for the national swimming centre in Stirling too! I'm so annoyed! I'm desperate to use my new toy! :'(
This is not good news! 😞 We would be interested to hear the reasons for this? 🤔
@@gtn I'm not too sure of their reasons to be honest. But I have read from other people on the Internet that the life guards cannot tell if you are drowning face down in the water. Not sure if this is true though.
MissLyssieBear I don't know the reason either, but shouldnt they be able to tell the difference between a swimming and a floating person?
@@johannes99h you'd think.... Lol
Same at the Rebecca Adlington pool in Mansfield. First day out and got told by lifeguard they are not allowed during public sessions, so that's me done. 😞
I can't breath without a nose clip while using snorkel. Always i swallow water.
So long as I am usin a snorkel, my body position is ok. When I start breathing, my body position is destroyed. For me swimming with a snorkel is an end in itself, while the real difficulty is to deal with proper breathing.
ORCO or ORCA ?
Your hands are crossing over your center line near your belly, pull/push straight through you’ll go faster 😜
I used a snorkel for the first time ever today and felt like I was drowning. I felt water going up my nose all the time. I kept taking breaths through my mouth and expelling hard through my nose but it felt really awkward. Is this sonething I need to get used to? Or am I doing something wrong?
My pool wont let me use one
Interesting, what is the reasoning behind this?
Apparently you're not alone.
Contact the manager, or whoever is in charge that wrote the policy. They likely banned the side snorkel, this front one has a different purpose.
I always dream about having such flexible ankles.
same omg
Bought one more than a year ago and still stays at home, never had the courage to try once 😖
Now is a good time then!
@@heatherfell_oly now it becomes an absolute must after being encouraged by no one else but our beloved Heather ✌️
Same lol
i am a professional swimmer in turkey for 10 years and yet still cant use snorkel.
Its not the video to teach how to use snorkel , its just snorkels benefits video
nice but it didn't answer the most tricky thing to manage with a snorkel: Water in the nose.
Vainzou my snorkel came with a nose clip
water in the nose is a big issue. i bought a nose clip. still not loving mine.
You either buy a nose clip or breath out through the nose.
Stop breathing in through your nose.
I forgot to mention a nose clip, a lot of people opt for these when using a snorkel.

Breathe out constantly through your nose and inhale through your mouth via the snorkel.
how do you make a flip turn, when i do, the snorkel fills with water, and i know u r supposed to blow hard, but its never enough and i end up swallowing water
You are so charming.
Thank you.
I’ve used a mask and snorkel for probably 20+ years so I’m used to breathing just through my mouth. I didn’t realize there was a lap snorkel, the design is perfect this is very exciting info.! Now I can just use goggles and this snorkel and not look so ridiculous at public pools!
