I came here because I was curious. I don't even swim. This video is very clear; no useless music, no noise, just your voice. Great! We don't need anything more! Explanations = very clear, no rush. Thanks very much. Merci beaucoup !
Today I got my snorkel, then I went to the pool, excited. Then I got water in my nose and found it harder than I expected. Thank you for your video, I'll try to adapt to it in a few weeks.
I bought a nose plug when I got my snorkel (the same as the one in the video). It worked really well! I'm just a swimmer that likes to breathe constantly and not hold my breath. I thought it was super easy and super effective! As for expelling CO2, this is done either by the nose or the mouth (we never do it at the same time). The body would compensate for increasing CO2 by increasing the rate of breathing (CO2 is the main driver of respiration rate).
yesterday i used my snorkel for the first time. it’s hard to describe how badly my body tried to refuse taking a deep breath in! definitely something i need to get used to
The first 2 times I tried using a snorkel was before seeing your video. And of course I bought the wrong kind (I do get water in the snorkel that I can’t purge while swimming). I also found I could only use the snorkel if I plugged my nose. I’m a nose breather; my body wants to bring in air through my nose. I just can’t get use to having that water go up my nose. Since I’m 70 and only want to learn to swim, I’m going to allow myself to plug up my nose :)
Thanks! For many years I have been using the original Finis snorkel and original hand paddles (we are getting older together). I do use a nose clamp. My biggest problems is water in the tube, especially if I look down. Most times a quick exhale will clear the tube. The nose clamp gives me a strong mouth exhale to clear the tube. You did not mention breath control. Part of my breathing cycle includes a strong exhale to keep the tube clear. I imagine that I must look like and sound like a whale. New to me: Finis Stability Center-Mount Swimmer's Speed Snorkel
Thank you! Thank you!! THANK YOU!!! I have one and never use it because 'it's not as easy as it looks'. Time to un-drawer it, get use to it (mostly the water in the nose), and put it to good use!
Two extra tips. (I swim continuously with Finis snorkel a lot to keep a balanced stroke, plus drills.) You should routinely exhale through your nose and inhale through the snorkel. It’s good practice anyway to do some exhaling through your nose at the start of a regular stroke. Flip turns: Right before you start the turn, inhale sharply for extra air, and then the exhale through the tube throughout the turn. This keeps the tube clear and you don’t have to go to force air out at the end of the turn. Just take your next breath through the tube as you surface. It’s fairly natural and not too different than a regular flip turn. Be sure your head and snorkel facing down the lane as you start to push off.
Just started using a snorkel and from listening to the breathing description I thought I was doing it wrong. I've been breathing out of my nose all the time. Glad your comment put me at easy :)
If you are doing streamlined kick with a snorkel it's better to dump the board - that position with a board can put quite a lot of unnecessary stress on the shoulders, especially when combined with a sub-optimal body position. 80% of swimmers experience shoulder pain, no need to make the issue worse. A fair few coaches are increasingly removing the kickboard from all training for this reason (and others).
Tarren from philippines here I got the Nabaji Snorkel its cheap but very usefull I tried it this morning your right. Do not use nose clip. 1st the water came inside mynose I find it hard but I get used to it.
I have a question, does using the snorkel in swimming improve our breathing ? Or is there any drill which we can try with snorkel to improve our breathing techniques ?
I'm 67 and swim about 5 times a week. I love my snorkel! I'm not interested in speed and with a snorkel, I can swim so much longer because I don't have to turn my head to breath. I like to breathe in through the snorkel mouthpiece and out through my nose. If I want to swim really quietly, with no exhale bubbles, I breath in and out through the snorkel. Swimming becomes meditative.
With a snorkel I can swim freestyle a lot longer without having to rest or change to backstroke. I’m just using it most of the time for freestyle. I’m 73 and just swimming for health. Not sure that purge valve makes very much difference.
second week of learning to swim and first day using a snorkel. everyone at pool was laughing at me, thinking it as a useless tool. by the end of a 45 min session, i was able to clear 12.5m with a snorkel a couple of times without getting in any water through my nose, which i could easily do it multiple times without a snorkel. and the most amazing part, i was able to mimic 3 or 4 close to perfect strokes out of 100s.
Hello Taren, have you tried the new FINIS Stability snorkel? It looks far more comfortable without the head brace. I'm very curious about how it compares to the original version.
Taren the first time I played around with the snorkel water shot up my nose 😂😂😂! So I went and bought me a nose clip. Based on your video, you explained it is better to learn to keep some constant pressure in your nose and blow out every once in awhile. Are there any kind of techniques to practice breathing with the snorkel without a nose clip?
Thanks for this. I've been using my snorkel and watched a bunch of videos but no one seems to address flip turns with snorkel... do you have suggestions?
hahahahha did the same mistake, thinking u should breathe in through mouth out through nose, almost drink the pool. Yes, this is going to take some practice.
This might be very individual but I found it interesting that you only blow out your nose once or twice per lap. I try for almost every exhalation to be out of my nose except when I am purging like after a flip turn.
are you saying the inhale and the exhale should both be through the snorkel? I started using one back in December, but I inhale with the snorkel and exhale out my nose on every breath? Is that not right? thanks! Jen
I have a burning question after following you for some time now. Do you keep your swimming gear at the pool? Your mesh bag doesn't seem secured in those bins and I don't think you would use a community snorkel so I have always wondered what was up there.
Is there any advice I can get on what the proper breathing technique would be with a snorkel? I just ordered the Finis with purge after being disappointed with the TYR 2.0 Ultralite Snorkel. I am not sure if I understand the proper way to breathe with it is. I was unable to pull enough air to fill my lungs and felt dizzied by the lack of oxygen I was getting. I just learned how to do the breaststroke within the last year and am attempting to learn the freestyle technique. I was hoping the snorkel could take the breathing equation out till I could get used to the technique.
I have both finis snorkel (the one with the big bow haven't got the valve but that's really not a problem, it thinner (less air, so difficult to swim very fast) and yes you take more water in it but is you keep your head 'correct' you down't have this problem (correct is not down the pool but looking more foreworth) but I like the normal one better to
Can someone tell me weather the centre snorkel training can increase endurance if I swim lots /high volume with it ?? As in, would I increase lung endurance from using the centre snorkel ??
You would increase lung endurance. As he says it in the video the snorkel restricts the airflow a bit and the effort to breath through it should strengthen the lungs
I use both and switch them up. When you breathe in and out of your mouthpiece, there's no exhale bubbles, so I find that it's a quieter swim. When you inhale through the snorkel and out your nose, it's a bit noisier because of the exhale bubbles from your nose.
same!! Going to try to clear nose once every 25 yards only.. I was breathing in through snorkel and out through nose and made me sneeze the whole rest of the day
Ugh, you never actually put it on or showed us how to begin! Love your videos but this one really frustrated me - step 1 put the mouthpiece in your mouth, step 2 put your head in the water???? how do i actually use it?

I just tried to use mine and failed! Glad I found this!!

Definitely going to take time to learn.
Sucking up pool water in my nose is no fun and hurts like the dick'ins
I've been swimming with a snorkel for almost a year.
I inhale through the snorkel and exhale through my nose.
I've never exhaled through the snorkel.
Exhale through the tube throughout the turn? What about water that would shoot up your nose?

Well explained , all points were told thanks Dude 👌🏿

Just wanted to say thanks, you’ve really helped me make some great training equipment choices 👍

Great, great, and great to the point video.
Finally, i arrived here after watching 10 plus
second week of learning to swim and first day using a snorkel.

And also as u explain so well, would u plz tell us how to get use to breathing with snorkel with more details , when to breath in and out ?
Very timely Taren. Had a few near drowning experiences today with the snorkel. Lifeguards were looking nervous :))
Do not drown!
Thank you for reinforcing the snorkel use and the tips of best use.
Thanks for your info.
Fabulously interesting and fun. Thank you!!!

I have the same quetion too

Yep I do this too; Carl Millholland's comment above mentions this too so I think we're good :)
same but then after swim I was sneezing and all congested!
This is a really good video, thank you it has helped me lots.
A tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies lately.
@Miles Colten yup, have been watching on flixzone for since december myself :D
Great!! Thanks very much.
Why isn't anyone mentioning the harm of using nose clip with frontal snorkel and choking due to the combination?
Excelent video. Clear info. Thanks.
I have a burning question after following you for some time now. Do you keep your swimming gear at the pool? Your mesh bag doesn't seem secured in those bins and I don't think you would use a community snorkel so I have always wondered what was up there.
Great video and amazing thorough explanation. Thanks!
Can I use a snorkel to work on my endurance?
Does the centre snorkel increase lung capacity/fitness??
Is there any advice I can get on what the proper breathing technique would be with a snorkel?

I love your vids Taren. I am shooting for my first Olympic triathlon in June. I need to get started on a training program. Do you have any?
Thanks
Yes, absolutely. Go to teamtrainiac.com, that's my training platform. First two weeks are free!
Tried using it today..
I think I inhaled half of the pool up my nose.
I have both finis snorkel (the one with the big bow haven't got the valve but that's really not a problem, it thinner (less air, so difficult to swim very fast) and yes you take more water in it but is you keep your head 'correct' you down't have this problem (correct is not down the pool but looking more foreworth) but I like the normal one better to
PS Taren down't you have the 'stop' fore your snorkel to train more fitness?
And littel 'hack' I do ducketape round het snorkel so it doesn't move when you do flipturn
Great Advice.
Subscribed!
Very good explanation on t)3 subject
Thank you.
How to put the snokel?
full face snorkel or this?
Nose plugs are basically only for backstroke dolphin kick so if you are a comp swimmer you probably should use a nose plug
Super!
Thank you
the point about the carbon dioxide you mentioned? This is “my winning” point for using the Ameo....
It’s called a purge valve
wow really helpful
Ok, hold on............is it breathing in and out through the snorkel ??? or in through snorkel and out through nose????
I use both and switch them up. When you breathe in and out of your mouthpiece, there's no exhale bubbles, so I find that it's a quieter swim. When you inhale through the snorkel and out your nose, it's a bit noisier because of the exhale bubbles from your nose.
Damn, i bought the diving snorkel for the swimming lesson :((((
The water gets in my nose when I breath in 😂. I think it's easier with the regular breathing pattern.
Hmmm - maybe I need to be clearing my nose as I find I sneeze a lot after swims with the snorkel.
same!! Going to try to clear nose once every 25 yards only.. I was breathing in through snorkel and out through nose and made me sneeze the whole rest of the day
Susan Wiggins Same, I tend to really breathe in my nose and my mouth, so I suspect it’ll just take practice
You talked your way to the whole video and not showed how to use it in water👎
Thanks Mate!
Ugh, you never actually put it on or showed us how to begin! Love your videos but this one really frustrated me - step 1 put the mouthpiece in your mouth, step 2 put your head in the water???? how do i actually use it?
Get a grip, dude. Its easy
Just bought one of these, and almost swallowed the whole pool water
More like $29 and lots of recent reviews of product breaking
20 bucks my ass! its 60 CAD!
Was that a Vietnamese D -- O?
