MAJOR HURRICANE IAN! Things are not looking good and I am in the path! What now!?

- Major Hurricane Ian is a serious threat to my boat and home. Hurricane Ian is strengthening to a catastrophic Category 4 storm headed for the west coast of Florida. I am in the Tampa Bay area which has not experienced a direct impact by a major hurricane in a century. Ian is threatening to break that streak. This could bring record breaking storm surge to a very vulnerable region. After tremendous uncertainty in the forecast track, and serious consideration to the potential consequences, I have decided to keep my DeFever 44 Trawler in her home port in St. Petersburg, FL and do my best to prepare her for the worst case scenario. This is an incredibly stressful situation. I really hope we are spared again in the Tampa Bay area and my vessel is allowed to remain afloat. Wish me and all that are in the path of Ian luck, we will need it.
Wow! Glad you made it. Thank God.
Thank you!
I hope you made it through the hurricane safely and your boat is safe.
Thank you Stephen, made it through safe and sound thankfully! We got really lucky up in the Tampa Bay Area
@@AquaCultured I'm so glad to hear that, needless to say, I was concerned.
I hope you’re alright Capt Butch, that was big.
Thank you, the boat and I made it through fine. Can’t say how lucky we were up here enough. It is gut wrenching to see the aftermath just 70-90 miles south
Good luck. Stay safe.
Made it through safe and sound thank you!
Oh damn man. I hope you and the boat stay safe.
Much appreciated!
Prayers
Good luck bud. I’ve lived through many of them including Charlie, Katrina and Rita to name a few. Never on a boat but I know you will all stick together and make it through. We will be praying for your safety and minimal damage to your property.
Stephen, really appreciate that. We are definitely a community that will get through it together! Many of us in the marina have weathered many a storm aboard and are ready to endure again
Fingers crossed. Stay safe.
Made it through safe and sound! Thank you
@@AquaCultured Glad to hear it!
nowing the presure you are under all i can say is good luck you have done all you can do
Definitely one of the most stressful and exhausting experiences. Really appreciate that Grant
Best of luck! I’m on the other side of Florida but still in the predicted path. However, we won’t see the potential winds you guys could get. The only other positive is, I don’t have a boat at the moment. Hope you and your boat fare well!
Thanks Mark! This storms a biggin, I’m sure you will get some nice breeze and rain over there.
Blessings to you all. Band of Brothers and Sisters.
💪💪💪
Praying it goes south of us, stay safe
For me I am relieved it is looking to go south of my area, but I hate to say that since it is going to be terrible for my southerly neighbors
Stay safe, Dude!! 😮
Thanks Paul!!
Very good report, I live
Great report from a knowledgeable person. Love to listen to you on any subject. I will always follow you. Good luck and stay safe.
@@johnbuschman8815 I appreciate you very much!! Thank you!!!! Made it through so I can continue what I have been doing!
Also in the Tampa area, 🙏 you, and all our neighbors to the South. Just found your channel, looking to some day retire onto a boat. Would love to pick your brain sometime. Stay safe🙏
Hey there neighbor, hope you faired okay, all is good here. So glad you stumbled upon the channel, would be happy to lend you some of the knowledge I have
@@AquaCultured Glad to hear! Look forward to it!
Hunker down! Prayers up that you and your beautiful boat will be spared the wrath of Mother Nature.
Really appreciate that! Hunker activated
Best of luck to you and your friends! I don't know if it will do you any good, but if I were going to have my boat prepped for heavy weather you'd be my first choice to make it happen.
Really appreciate that John! I am fortunate to of gained the experience over the years to be able to confidently prepare my vessel. It paid off, with a lot of luck as well of course
Oooooooh Miiiiiiiiii 🌀 Best of luck (and skill) for all ya'll down in Fla! ⚓
Thanks so much, the luck is always welcomed
@@AquaCultured Always! Looks like ya'll might luck up!
Sadly there is no fail safe option to turn to. For most of the reasons you have discussed.
I think your choices and actions are the very best for the situation at the time.
All the best for you and your boating community.
You hit the nail on the head! My decision and preparation thankfully ended up being the right one. I feel so bad for everyone south of here
Sorry to hear your there. We live on a catamaran but in Chesapeake during hurricane . Good luck but think I would of headed west🙏
Yeah its always a very tough call on what to do with these storms. It’s a gamble either way you go, or don’t go. Hope you have an enjoyable rest of the season up there
Thinking of u as the storm makes landfall.
Thank you, it was an ordeal but all is good here
Take care.. Looks like you have done everything you can 😎😎😎🚢🚢🚢👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thank you! The preparation was successful, all is good with the boat
Be Safe!! Winter home in Englewood, I think that is ground zero!!
Thanks Herb! Yeah it’s looking like it is zeroing in on that area. I hope your winter home fares well so that you can enjoy this season
@@AquaCultured I think its gonna go the path of charley. When that happened we were spared with little damage only being 20 miles from Punta Gorda. Stay safe.
Good luck! Our 43’ Defever rode out 2021 hurricane ida in Lafitte la. but when the storm surge receded she ended up laying over on her port side. We rescued her after the storm and she’s up and running. 💙 they’re amazing boats! Sending prayers of safety to you and all the Folks in Florida and hope that the boats stay afloat!
Thanks so much Donna! They are remarkable and resilient vessels! That is so great to hear that you were able to save her and keep the ol’ gal chugging! DeFever Strong!
I'm with Blair below, why not make run for it. Oh, you answered it as I finished video. OK , good luck...👍🤞
Appreciated Troy!
Isn’t more important that the top of the piers are taller than the projected storm surge?
any new vids for update?
I will post a follow up video as soon as I can!
Can't you just motor west? Maybe head over to Destin for a nice little trip and skip the whole thing???
With the track that was projected just days ago, it was a real possibility that the storm could have trekked to the panhandle. It would have been about a 280 mile cruise as well with not great conditions. That would take around 40 hrs, and if a mechanical issue occurred, it could be bad news. But man would it be great to be there now! It is never an easy decision on what to do when these beasts come wobbling toward you
Odds are you lost your boat and maybe your life ! Hope you make it through the storm ! You should have left !
Very glad I didn’t leave, made it through safe and sound staying put.
@@AquaCultured what was it like with the sea surge.
@@DS-yn4vg we had the reverse storm surge where I am. The water was blown out of Tampa Bay which was pretty wild. Some boats had cleats ripped out of decks. Luckily I was around to adjust lines on my boat to handle the drop in water level. My boat dropped down around 5-6 feet
How did u make out?
The boat and I made it through with no damage thankfully. We got extremely lucky, and fortunately I made the right call to stay put.
I am in St.Pete. If you get in a jam and need some help hit me up.
Really appreciate that Rob. Hope you didn’t sustain any damage on your property or belongings
@@AquaCultured some branches down, etc. but otherwise looking good. How did boat and yacht basin do? Haven't driven down there yet this morning.
@@robcatterton8244 the boat did great, worst thing was a rain water leak in to the main cabin, but not a big deal. The water level drop was unreal, I did have to adjust lines a couple of times to deal with that. Some boats sustained some damage like cleats ripped out of decks, broken lines, damage from rubbing against docks, etc. But haven’t seen anything too terrible yet
HAARP
👀 whoever runs that system must like Tampa Bay
