Cruising Across Florida on a Hatteras Motor Yacht-Part 3- Clewiston to Tampa Bay

  • After 4 days of cruising aboard a 2004 64' Hatters Motoryacht, we successfully made the trip from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico (Ft. Lauderdale to Tampa Bay), right through the state of Florida via the Okeechobee Waterway. We traversed some more locks on the Caloosahatchee River, carefully navigated through the hurricane decimated Ft. Myers region, experienced a beautiful zen-like offshore sunset experience, and pounded through some nautical weather. And of course we couldn't have had a boat trip without any issues. Happy to say it was a successful trip with priceless experiences.

      Doug, I am so happy that you enjoyed the videos, and always very much appreciate your feedback. I am glad I had the opportunity to pick up the camera and share what I saw to everyone out there. It was definitely a unique trip, and I have some great plans in store coming up.

    All of my experience on the water was in Michigan and California. But my father lived in Florida and I did visit. I do enjoy your videos.

    I watched a hurricane hit a condo complex with a marina in Florida and I was completely shocked when I watched the floating docks float right over the top of the short piers and proceeded to bash into each other destroying countless boats. I sat there thinking if they were 2 ft higher or if they strategically placed taller ones to prevent the floating docks from getting out of control not one boat would’ve been damaged. I can’t fathom why those precautions aren’t in place in a hurricane prone area. Baffles the mind

    Finished the four video series and highly recommend it (it’s not an in-depth 2 hour tutorial on an engine room) as well balanced and interesting even if boating isn’t your first priority. Thanks again, and waiting for the T-shirt in the mail! 👀 (This isn’t a “finish the series and get a T-shirt” thing? Never mind then. )

    I lived in Florida for 5 years, that was 30 years ago, enjoyed and visited the entire State except for Lake Okeechobee. Lived in West Palm, but enjoyed visiting and preferred spending time on the west coast. New subscriber after watching the 3 part video, looking forward to more. The last year I was there, we had 55 inches of rain in October, now living in Vegas receiving only 4-5 inches of rain...per year!

      Thank you Joe 🙌. Boy, a lot has changed over the last 30 years around these parts! I have to agree though, the west coast of Florida is where it’s at. I thin south Florida got something close to 55 inches a week ago! Crazy times. I hope the desert life is treating you well, aside from the lack of rain

    Great job! It’s in our bucket list. Lots good info. One of my biggest concerns is over night stays since Ian. Our boat is a 2005 Viking Princess 67, very similar to the boat being delivered.

      Thanks Carlos! Yeah getting to a marina when transiting the area just takes a longer day. But making it work is doable, just takes that extra bit of planning. Hope to see you out there sometime, thanks for watching

      Indeed it is the Gulf of Mexico, but to me it is interconnected with the world’s oceans.

    Thank you Capt., I enjoyed taking this journey with you guys via your videos. How do you know the height of the bridges? Is the clearance height posted? What's the height of this vessel and your 44' Defever?

    • @AquaCultured
      @AquaCultured  Год назад +1

      Thank you so much for coming along! Yes, there are readings at the bridges that tell you the height, which is usually listed as the lowest possible height at the current water level. For most bascule bridges, you will have a few extra feet of clearance at the center. And for planning a trip, you can look up cruising guides describe the bridges along the waterways you will be traveling. The air draft of the Hatteras is around 24’ and my DeFever is around 18’.

    A group of my friends are traveling up the Gulf side but destination is St. Pete. John’s Pass seems too far north for our entrance into Tampa Bay. Do you have a preference for which entrance into the Bay coming from south? Never been through there. Thanks

    • @AquaCultured
      @AquaCultured  Год назад +1

      Oh nice! I am actually based in St. Pete. If they are approaching from the south out in the Gulf, they can enter Tampa Bay between Egmont Key and Anna Maria. Plenty of water. They can enter on the north side of Egmont as well but you have to go out around the shoals and then you would be entering with the shipping channel. So it is definitely best to make that turn south of Egmont, and then pass between Egmont and Passage Key.
