I notice that nobody is copying the "Boitano Spin", thats because it's done with a hand held high above the head. It changes the center of balance in the body and you have to be an expert athlete to master it. Go Brian!!!!

Today's male skaters are all about quad, quad quads.... no one skates with the power, grace and artistry of Brian Boitano. He will forever be my favorite skater. ♥

Amazing as always. The artist singing both songs is Boitano's longtime partner Frank D'Ambrosio. His singing is just as phenomenal as Brian's skating.

@@theresabollman8061 - I was still a teenager the first time I saw him perform that piece, when it was featured on his "Canvas of Ice" special on TV. The speed with which he entered the spread eagle, and how many times he circled that young girl, still kind of takes my breath away...

@@ajchenmph Oh it must have been amazing. Glad you got to experience it. I am always pleasantly surprised at his grace on he ice. Most of the men in Figure Skating are small and thin, and I'm sure it must be easier for them. But Brian, bordering on 6 FT and a mass of muscles has his own inner grace that never seems to fail him. His Spread Eagles are the most perfect, fast and strong that I have ever seen. I love to watch him cook and talk about home decorating. Brian can do it all. He's such a real and kind person.

Thank you for adding this beautiful video to RUclips. The artist singing is Franc D'Ambrosio who played "The Phantom" in Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatrical production of "The Phantom of the Opera" for 5 years. What a beautiful combination of Brian's artistry and Franc's voice. This is from Franc's second CD "Franc D'Ambrosio's Hollywood" Songs of the Silver Screen. A beautiful performance by Brian Boitano!

Actually, it IS Shenandoah (the first part), and the second part if from Paint Your Wagon (They Call the Wind Maria." The singer is Franc D'Ambrosio, who played the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera for years and years in San Francisco (and was also in Godfather Part III). I think this was a performance from the 1998 World Pro -- he'd have been about 34 at the time.

I remember watching this when it occurred. I've never forgotten it. Still makes me cry just a little bit. But it's "Mariah", not Maria. ;-)

The official spelling from the musical "Paint Your Wagon" uses the spelling "Maria", though it's not said it's written.
According to Wikipedia, Mariah Carey was named after the song with an alternate spelling. So while she popularized "Mariah" after becoming a celebrity, the song is intentionally "Maria" and it came first.

@jehouse Actually, the proper spelling for the song is "Maria". "Mariah" was only popularized by Mariah Carey, who was named after the song and has an altered version of the spelling. Go figure, eh?
