  • Geneva, SWITZERLAND - 1986 World Figure Skating Championships, Men's Long Program - First an interview with Brian Boitano of the United States where he indicated that he was determined to win the Long Program...and that he did. By winning the Long Program and having Brian Orser of Canada place 2nd and Aleksandr Fadeev of the Soviet Union place 3rd, Boitaino would win the Gold Medal in a tie-breaker (he and Orser were tied in Factored Placement totals, and that tie would be broken by the higher placement in the Long Program).

So the Soviet judge gave Boitano a 5.8 for technical, and gave Fadeev a 5.9 (even though Fadeev fell twice and made three other jump mistakes)? Unbelievable.

Of all the male skaters Brian is the most perfect in his finishings. Also how does he manage (when extending his leg) yo get it and keep his foot exactly even with his hip? It looks like he has a board on it. Perfect!

Such blatant corruption should have been punished with lifetime banishment.

Brian Boitano has the perfect spread eagles, his back is straight and he does not stick his bum out like the majority of skaters do!

Fadeev was 5th in the long program, not 3rd. If Fadeev had been 3rd in the long program he would have won. Even 4th in the long program he would have tied Orser and Boitano in Factored Placements total but lost on the long program tiebreaker. Fadeev was 1st in figures and 2nd in the short, Boitano was 4th in figures and 5th in the short, Orser was 5th in figures and 1st in the short.
