Same with my dad, we were frequent drive in movie attendees and westerns were a staple in those days as were double features. I don’t remember what the 2nd movie was but we talked him into going because of the western . He hated musicals but loved this one, as did we 4 kids & our mom. It’s still a family favourite. I have lost count of the times I have watched it.
You’re welcome, and I agree. I’m glad it wasn’t too difficult editing the scene--extending it a bit to accommodate the longer length of the song from the motion picture soundtrack album used to replace the movie’s original audio. Anyway, thank you for your comment and thank you for watching (and sorry for my slow reply).
I'm surfing through you tube and listening to Robert Goulet and now Harve Presnell sing this great song. Goulets rendition is fantastic but this rendition has no peer. As gorgeous and rich a voice as you can possibly imagine. Again I make reference to the fabulous Australian baritone Philip Quast, but how would you like to have Presnell, Gouket and Quast in the same production? Insane musical gifts.
Named my first puppy after this song it's a beautiful song he does the best job singing it Paint Your Wagon was a funny movie Lee Marvin was great in it
Two words. Majestic and magnificent! Also, in Saving Private Ryan he delivers one of the best lines in the history of cinema when he, as a general, learns that 3 brothers were killed in action but the 4th might be alive. "The boy's alive, we're going to find him, and we are going to GET HIM THE HELL OUT Of THERE!"
Until I found out otherwise--onetime thinking this was Howard Keel--the extent of my familiarity with Harve Presnell was from the movie, “Fargo” where he was bald. So, I’ll have to take your word for it about the hair color. Anyway, thanks for commenting and thank you for watching (and sorry for my slow reply).
1:38 I much prefer this version of Maria because of the extra background music: both vocal and instrumental. It adds to the richness and musicality of the song......definitely Harv's song (RIP)
My great uncle wrote this song. He wrote it a long time ago for his wife. The song was initially titled “They Call The Wind Maria”. He sent it to some company, and they told him that it was no good. But after he left, that company stole the song and changed the name from “Maria” to “Mariah”. Wikipedia says that the writers of this song were Alan J. Lerner, and Frederick Loewe. But the real writer of this song was my great uncle, Carl Kangas. RIP Uncle Carl
I was born in a windy town, at the side of an ancient river, where everybody call and pry to Maria. Maybe because o this is so precious this song for me
"Mariah throws the stars around and sends the clouds of R'lyeh..." Thank you auto-generated CC... I now know that Paint Your Wagon is part of the Cthulhu Mythos.
Perhaps he did that on location. But, it was raining, the microphone would have picked up that sound of the rain. Most likely the singing would have to be redone in a studio. When the dialogue is done this way, it's called ADR ( Automated Dialogue Replacement)
Mariah Mariah They call the wind Mariah Away out here they got a name For rain and wind and fire The rain is Tess, the fire Joe, And they call the wind Mariah Mariah blows the stars around And sends the clouds a-flyin? Mariah makes the mountains sound Like folks were up there dying Mariah Mariah They call the wind Mariah Before I knew Mariah's name And heard her wail and whinin? I had a girl and she had me And the sun was always shinin? But then one day I left my girl I left her far behind me And now I'm lost, so gone and lost Not even God can find me Mariah Mariah They call the wind Mariah Out here they got a name for rain For wind and fire only But when you're lost and all alone There ain't no word but lonely And I'm a lost and lonely man Without a star to guide me Mariah blow my love to me I need my girl beside me Mariah Mariah They call the wind Mariah Mariah Mariah! Blow my love to me
Very good job dudes and well done!! Congratulations 991.32% yo throughout the 2nd sizzling patriotic week of said jubilant July y'all. What I love about this version is Harve looks and acts like he is genuinely feeling the pain of what he is singing. Just terrific.

🙌 yes
Great😅
The voices in that chorus were a kind of supernatural force too. Powerful harmonies !
Best all male choir performance I have ever heard.😊😊
My wife said should we see this movie? I said NO WAY, it's a musical, boy was I wrong, what a great movie!
Great actors, MUSIC, just AWESOME.

Harve Presnell and this song were made for each other. Truly exhilarating. ❤️
He was in a NBC show in the 90's called The Pretender, sadly he didn't sing in it.
Magnificent voice. Harve Presnell's version of this song is my favorite.
My grandpa was an uncredited electrician for this movie for the filming in Eastern Oregon. He had great stories about the cast.
Tell one of them. I'd like to hear it :)
Share!
Yes, pleeeze!!
Thank you for including the full orchestra opening, it adds so much to this song. One of my favorite songs..

What a gorgeous voice. And he sang this with so much feeling
Just gives me chills to listen to this!
No one can match Harve Presnell!
Robert Goulet tried it. Couldn't do it. This is Presnell at his best.
Love that picture the Music the Acting great the vocal all beautiful
I remember watching this at the Drive-In with my parents 60something ... this song is def on my playlist ....
It is a great song.

IT'S IN THE PLAYLIST IN MY HEAD I find myself singing this very often so many years after I heard it in 1969.
Me too.
Harve sang the best rendition of this song.
Yes harve sang it best
I don’t believe anyone else could sing that song with more conviction. Just as no one else can sing God Bless America better than Kate Smith. Cheers!
Harve had other worldly pipes

Gorgeous man and a powerful voice.
Harve Presnell exuded more leading man energy in this one little song than Clint Eastwood did in the whole film 😂😭 stunning
I was just thinking the same thing. 😊
Well, thanks for commenting and thank you for watching (and sorry for my slow reply).
Impossible to argue
Kinda harsh, considering Harve Presnell was a well established singer. Clint Eastwood was not, and it was also early in his career
🤣🤣🤣

I’ve a friend named for this song
Listening to this epic song feels spiritual.

Absolutely wonderful!! He should have always had his hair dark.

Wonderful song. He is a great singer and this movie is fantastic. I'm 28 years old.

😮 Wow!
abraham_benson, can you prove your story?
Beautiful song! 3:37
Incredible powerful voice. Wish we had heard more of him.
I was born in a windy town, at the side of an ancient river, where everybody call and pry to Maria. Maybe because o this is so precious this song for me
Such a great movie..
This is why I was named Maryah! One of my mom’s favorite songs 😊!
To nie jest imię Marayah tylko Maria Twoje imię jest zgoła dziwne i nie podoba mi się Maria to.jest piękne imię.
I always think of my dear friend Mariah, who’s in college now, when I hear this song. She and I had the same dance class schedule for three years.
Love the way he sing it with so much passion ❤
We just don't hear these amazing voices anymore 😢
always gives me chills....
My favourite song of this film
Beautiful song and scene from the movie but wasn't Jean Seberg just so beautiful. Absolutely beautiful and gorgeous.
Wasn't she just
Amazing.
Agreed.

Thanks for the laugh!
Love Harve Presnell!
Absolutely incredible version
I work at a senior living home and I’ve been trying to find this song
Several favorites in this movie sound track
This is the song why mimi was named Mariah by her mother.. now she is a legend singer in this world..😊😊
Presnell once said they shot this song in one take.

Paint your Wagon has now been released on 4K by Kino Lorber it also includes the Blu ray( region A) 😎😎😎
Sang this as a NYSMA solo in highschool i don't sing as well as Harve, wish i did . Won a blue ribbon for it anyway!
Congratulations! I have loved this song since I saw the movie in 1969 when I was 10 years old❤
Love this song ❤
Sung very nice
Beautiful
Where is my comment?
I love this song and 😢?

Harve Presnell was a General in Saving Private Ryan.
THAT's who he was!!! Weird that I didn't pick it up even after the third viewing! Thanks!

thanks for the lyrics !
In the Infantry, we called the cold wind the Hawk.
"Mariah makes the mountains sound like folks were up there dying" Epic! What an amazing song. Why didn't Elvis or Frank Sinatra record it?
They were smart enough to know that Harve owned this song.
Robert Goulet never got that memo and butchered it. Harve did indeed own it. @@galenstone9097
Pernell Roberts sings a decent version of this song.
@@Sunshine-zm1fx There was only one Herve.

Super. Gesungen❤❤🎉🎉🎁🎁🎶🎶
Loved the movie, but lee marvin and clint eastwood in a musical.
About Lee marvin's version of Wanderin Star" from the Wiki

Little known fact; he went on to be Jerry Lundegaard's father in law.
He was also a main character in the NBC show The Pretender, which came out in the 90's.
He played Johnny Brown in Unsinkable Molly Brown with Debbie Reynolds in 1963.
A song to swoon women and empower men! Goulet's is the best but I've yet to hear a bad version!
I’m partial to Howard Keels version. But you’re correct about there not being a bad version.
A song to swoon women and empower men!
More of a Goulet fan BUT I've yet to hear a bad version!
I love shoulder but I think, in this instance, this is the best version on this song
Such a michaya
Spelled. Mariah, not Maria.
I pick up my new gaming PC tomorrow, and can finally play Red Dead Redemption 2, LOL 🤣

Is there a name for wind in a hurricane? Its worse than any Mariah.
Actually, "away out here", we don't name any of the aforementioned things. This was evident to me even at age 8.
The greatest show song!
Fargo sent me. 🫠😉
