From what I have heard , he pretty much stayed in an argument with the writers, or the directors, the six or so years he was on the show. He felt the script was way too simple. He finally was released from his contract. That is supposed to be true. If it is, the directors, and writers probably never tried to write a script for a cowboy that sings better than they wrote back then. He sings so well, it makes me wonder if he had extensive training in that area. I'm trying to find out, just for my curiosity.
Wasn't he just gorgeous!🥰 I was 11 and nothing and no one could stop me watching Bonanza...i still remember my tantrums if i couldn't watch it..😄 sorry i was a terror..i miss those days...what a great voice he had..😘🤠
My favorite Cartright, next was Hoss.... Pernell was talented as an actor and singer, but also quite a good person as well... I miss guys like this who made good role models for young guys growing up
Watch The Way Station episode (1962) with him and Dawn Wells (Gilligans Island). She plays the young daughter of a station master and she falls hard for Adam. He, as always, is the genteel protector and resists her advances because of her tender age.... but there is an incredible, genuine chemistry between Dawn and Pernell.
Loved Pernell Roberts' acting & HIS songs . However . . . Harve Presnell's cover version in the 1969 movie " Paint Your Wagon" is unmatched . Many famous / great singers have covered this song ~ & sang it strongly ~ except everyone else sings it . . . Harve FEELS it ! This is HIS song . Harve Presnell's powerful voice invokes true emotion . . . you can see it in his eyes & in his expressions . Harve rips your heart out with this one . Paint Your Wagon ~ starring Clint Eastwood , Lee Marvin & Jean Seberg ~ is a great movie musical ! And Harve Presnell steals their thunder with this song ! PERNELL ROBERT OMG!! WHAT A MOST BEAUTIFUL COMMANDING VOICE!!! AMAZING SINGER + ACTOR. PRECIOUS LYRICS!!! I LOVED BONANZA!!!! RIP TQ FOR A LOVELY RENDITION!!!!!
I may love music, but I needed Google to let me know Pernell was a baritone. I am so used to tenors, it is a nice change to hear a deeper voice. I loved him as Adam and Trapper John, but it wasn't until I searched for the lyrics to Early One Morning that I discovered he was a singer as well. Thanks to RUclips and those who uploaded the works of this gifted man. I am glad to be old enough to know him when he was still alive.
I wish I knew some years back that he was a singer too like I am. He had a beautiful voice. It's too bad his talent wasn't recognized sooner. Now that he's gone, he will be singing with the angels.
A beautiful rendition! He really enunciated those words clearly. When I looked at his face he seems to bear a strong resemblance to the Algerian/French writer and philosopher Albert Camus. I thought he was a fine actor and did a good job on that show.
in the bonanza series he was the on that was level headed,he balanced out the silliness of the family, him singing,he is multifaceted talented,no surprise at all,rip pernell
Another "Out West" song that captures the spirit of the huge, spacious complex part of the United States. I was born and raised in Michigan (a nice state) but now Iive in South Texas. I love to visit my mother in law in New Mexico. Every country has its uniqueness, and The West is one of THE things, in my opinion, that makes my country unique.
According to the Smothers Brothers, this is a Dutch folk song. I admit it sure does fit the old west. And Pernell's version is better than any of the others.
@@janchilton Nope, it was written by Alan J. Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe for their 1951 Broadway musical, Paint Your Wagon, which is set in the California Gold Rush. Rufus Smith originally sang the song on Broadway, and Joseph Leader was the original singer in London's West. Tom and Dick fooled ya.
He kept having disagreements with the producers. He said the show was too simple, as far as the actor's lines. They never would change the lines, so he asked to be relieved and let out of his contract.
@@skipdow3 They misled him going in, said he'd have much more creative opportunity - but when the show became a hit they fearfully stuck to a formula... worst of all is they would not even let him guest on other shows. PR (RIP) did what he had to do. Just glad for the seasons he was there.
I'm in love with that handsome deep strong voice. I can't help listening and playing it on the guitar. ANd sometimes, in the silence of the wind, I assume, here he is beside me, playing the guitare with me and his voice harmonises with mine. What a great dream.
each of the Bonanza family had singing careers except for Dan blocker and made several records. Pernell Roberts does well with this song, another who does very well on this song is Harve Presnell. Both are great versions and worth listening to.
I love Pernell Roberts’ voice… and found him really attractive as an actor (with snd without hair), but I have to admit have Harve Presnell’s voice has a lot of angst and emotion in it, that’s thrilling.
PERNELL ROBERT UNA VOZ ABSOLUTAMENTE BELLISIMA PRECIOSA, MUY BARONIL, INIGUALABLE COMO CANTANTE Y ACTOR!!! BONANZA ERA MUY BUEN PROGRAMA!! EXCELENTE LIRICAS!!! GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR ESTA MUSICA BELLISIMA.
My favourite video-song-clip for Pernell Roberts. I love the way you composed the film-clips to underline the verses of the song and it`s wonderful performer! Thank you, rika!

@Tim Anders Do you mean he stood up and spoke truth to power like a man and the heroes in movies and not like the corporate ass kissers who only care only about their personal wealth first?
ADAM THE GOOD LOOKING ONE AND THEN THERE'S HOSS THE BIG GUY WITH A GREAT BIG HEART OF COURSE LITTLE JOE THE LADIES MAN THE YOUNGEST ONE SO SWEET AND ADORABLE. I LOVED THOSE GUYS PLAYING IN THAT SERIES.
Had a big crush on Adam back in the 60's but had no idea Pernell could sing. I guess I overlooked the Bonanza episodes where he did. I was lucky enough to meet him and spend the day with he and his wife back in 1979 just before he started Trapper John, MD. He had just finished shooting the Centennial mini-series. One of the highlights of my life.
Thank you posting this version; one I had never heard before. It a favorite song of mine and this completes my versions of this song. Best to you always.
Sunday nights in the 60s, Pernell Roberts was my favorite on Bonanza, but I had NO IDEA he could sing so beautifully, so deeply emotional WOW!

I agree with you; he was underated, tho very talented.
