Art background here as well, i see level gradients in the shadows you're talking about but it didnt occur to me beforehand to apply it to makeup. When i paint i used to just wing it go either a level down or up by adding black or white with my pre-mixed flesh tone that i decided on *then* i would harmonise the colours around it, but it makes sense that you would need to figure out your contour shades after you figure out your foundation colour because you damn well need to know if your simulated shadows are ashy or not. You're a genius at figuring this out, lol.
Have you done something on lighting for good makeup application yet? I dont really have a reliable natural light source right now so i'm thinking of getting an adjustable temperature ring light. Perhaps you could give us some tips on setting up the right environment for practicing application at home. Actually i haven't gotten through all of your stuff so i should dig around a little bit more after this. 😆🥰

Of course natural sunlight is useful because it will highlight any mistakes you’re making so you can then fix them, but I try to do my makeup in lighting similar to the lighting at my destination. Like the gross overhead lighting at work vs a low lit restaurant or bar vs bright sunlight at a game. Also if you know you’re gonna be taking pics with flash it can be useful to sit close to a bright lamp to do makeup

I really have trouble seeing undertones in general unless they’re pretty obvious, like I have no idea what my tone is. But when you held that palette up next to your face suddenly I could SEEEEE how green your skin is. It was almost to the point where I wondered if the white balance on your camera had shifted on its own. I think it’s the opposite side of the color wheel that made it more noticeable to me and now I’m wanting to grab some muted oranges and greens and purples to see if more blue or pink or green jumps out to me in my own skin tone.
I also get what you mean about undertones and overtones - I think. I don’t know what my skin’s undertone is exactly, but my face has a lot of redness in the skin “overtone” I guess you would call it, that has made it really hard for me to find a shade match that makes me look connected to my neck. I’m thinking I need to pick up color correctors and just play around and see if I can figure out what additions will make my foundations a better match.

This video is old now but I just had to say YES about the undertones overtones things- I have noticed the same thing but haven’t heard anyone else say it before. I think it’s easy to recognize on people who are super ruddy- they have very obvious red overtones, and when they wear clothes that match their red overtone the look like a lobster. But usually they have a blue undertone, so when they wear the right shade of blue it totally calms the redness of their complexion. I’m the same exact color as you Alex- everything that matches you matches me. Same hair and eye color too. My undertone is very green, with more yellow than blue in it. So I describe myself as a warm olive undertone. And yes, it’s extremely difficult to find foundation and contour shades but I love that you do the work for me lol. Thanks so much!

This makes perfect sense...it sounds exactly how most artists work to portray skin in art. I remember my artist friend who works primarily with oil paints speaking about this a lot, the idea of there being three primary shades to human skin, yellow, red, and blue, and the way you play with them creates the different tones and hues of skin shades. This is such a great video topic, thank you!!!

..certainly a knack for capturing our attention-- stunning look more often than not, but in recent vids, we are seeing more of a breakdown of the fundamentals (and how AA is coceptualizing).
This is interesting and it adds dimensionality to how we relate with a given look in terms of beauty, fashion, or whatever.
..Thanking people for being who they are and doing what they do so nicely. Truly a natural beauty..

As a painter, it totally makes sense! Human skin is very layered. Personally, i'm mixed and have the same issue you do in that my undertones are like, olive/greenish but my overtones are much more neutral, even going into cool. In my case, being anemic af doesn't help LOL. What I do it use a fairly neutral contour for my undertones and use a warmer one over the top (sometimes even a bronzy blush) and that seems to work.

I have pink and gray undertone with a greener shadow overtone so it's really hard to find both foundation and contour. Neutral is where I tend to stay as it's a bit of everything. This was very informative. Thank you

I bet this is the best "how to pick contour shade" video! I've seen tons of makeup videos but never came across this type of content all are just like - pick something that's cool toned! But i had to learn this through trial and error and rather preferred to use bronzer than contour on my insanely warm skin bcz of the trouble of getting a contour that's warm enough for me...
You deserve soooo much appreciation! You're just lovely - in every way possible.. 💝

How you explain undertones actually makes a lot of sense to me! I've been having this issue because I definitely have a cool undertone however I have a more yellow overtone so neutral/warm tones tend to look a little more flattering on me in my opinion. And for some reasons cool tones do not pull cool on me. Especially lip colors. Also cool tones I feel wash me out so... I don't know. It's killing me trying to figure out what is actually more flattering or natural looking. Ugh. Your videos are always so helpful though so thank you!

Can you do a video on lighting setup / type of lights you use to see your complexion the most accurately? Because I could see really clearly when you mentioned the shade difference between your neck and the foundation, and I know that I wouldn't be able to see that difference on myself until my face is captured on camera or something LOL. I feel like my eyes are deceiving me all the damn time but it might be my lighting ugh. I'm super warm olive it's annoying and I feel you girl. Thanks for the quality content always !

Dude, you’re the best. I literally had no clue why all blushes turned hella pink on me, what multicolor veins meant, why concealer made me go sickly and why that fenty amber made me look like I’d taken the brunt of a mean right hook. Then I found your channel. Figured out I had PALE olive skin and it all clicked. You’re a beacon in the darkness of makeup realness for olives! Thank you!!!

    • @sqoishicasette
      @sqoishicasette 3 года назад +9

The easiest to figure out the blush color is to try and pinch the lightest area of ur body with the softest skin ... See what color or redness u get, that is usually what would be the type of color you would get if you were naturally blushing... I know its weird but it was very hard for me to find my perfect blush color and I suddenly discovered this ... Tried on a couple of ny friends ... Tends to work
So if you get more warm peachy or warm red use a warm blush.. If it looks more pale pink use a blush like that

Totally agree with the undertone and overtone thing. Every time they would match me at any makeup counter, it’s always wrong because they base it off my undertone and the rule of thumb is the color of our veins but my veins match neutral. However, I am more warm or warmer shades blend better with my skin.

To be honest, I do not give a damn about contouring (it's a bit too much for me), I just came to watch this video because I love so much how you talk about these things. Omg! Thank you for this! I'm literally always saying how green my neck looks... It's soooo hard for me to match my foundation because my neck and my face aren't the shade shade at all... But I swear that first shade looks fucking AHH-MAZING! I hate how contour shades always either give me a 5 o'clock shadow (think if zombies had 5 o'clock shadows... That's exactly what it looks like... Dead 🙄) or look red af... And not like the new bronzer/blush trend either. So I'm so happy to see someone else with this stuggle that can help break it down.
