BTR used footage of the real musicians (who produced a 14 track album as "Kessoku Band" which is essentially the OST) as reference for the animation, as well as getting sponsored by the manufacturers of real instruments which can be seen throughout the show - all in an effort to be as accurate as possible. An incredible effort by a production team that were essentially taking charge for the first time.
Yeah lotta rotoscoping in that one. There's a piano anime where they mocap'ed the piano dude and do some impossible, but accurate, camera runs across the keys. Fantastic.
@@computer_toucher sakamichi no apollon?
@@ilham7345your lie in april
Also the original author of the manga made it accurate because she loves music, and wanted all the instruments to be accurate (Granted the manga doesn't have audio, but I swear I read this somewhere). So I assume that's why the animation studio also put in all that effort to honor that.
the amount of sponsor the show get is heartwarming as they showed great support and real interest
Bocchi the rock was actually pretty good when it came to the animation of them playing
Good animation references goes a looong way. Though I'm not sure if they went as far as rotoscoping; if it was, then it was really well done integrated to the style of animation
@@thefataon They didn't technically use rotoscoping but they did in fact use live action video and motion-captured CGI as reference material for the fully hand-painted animation. They went way further than plain rotoscoping, and I'm pretty sure they did this in some other scenes as well
@@A._Meroy All the musical sequences, including the Sick Hack performance, I believe. The show was made with love.
@@A._Meroy that's sick! Am a big fan of Btr, but never got into the behind the scenes stuff. Most anime that uses motion tracking cgi really suffer from it not working well with the non cgi scenes, but Btr really integrates it super well!
@@thefataon Not only the animators got all into the music, but voice actors as well started to learn to play. :D
I perfectly remember being positively amazed by the animation in Bocchi. Not only the drums, but all of the band members.
The specific moment that really hooked me was seeing Nijika smashing her cymbals in perfect timing with the music. After that, I re-watched the scene like 4 times.
And after watching a couple of times, something became painfully obvious: even more important than the accuracy (which was spot on) was every single little bit of movement from the characters. The way Nijika's body sways with her hits, the way Hitori and Ryo rock their guitar/bass back and forward, the way Kita bounces in front of the mic (as you can see at 0:10), just their entire body language in general. It's just animation bliss
what got me was noticing that the drums were off in the music and then bocchi mentioning that nijika was slow
honestly kinda blew me away that they would tie the sound to the story and it made me feel like they were actually playing rather than just like miming to an ost
like the characters would be able to play the music too
BTW was actually the first time I saw an anime actually go through the hoops of animating both audio AND visuals of a "bad performance". Very often when you see a supposed "bad performance" in a show, its just the regular audio and scenes and the characters mentioning there were mistakes. But here they went beyond that and actually produced the music a second time with messed up notes and timing. Its amazing!
i remember that there's a clip in one of their performances where there's a break and nijika isn't playing, and you can see her leg bouncing in time with the song
@@kitsuneneko2567it's not out of character. It's just showing that
1- she can get lost in music
2- she's willing to push herself to protect the band that has her only friends
@@kitsuneneko2567 it's not "my opinion", it's literally what's happening on screen.... You can't just take a decision by the author and say "that's not in character". The scene IS defining a character. This isn't some long running show with very defined personalities, we barely know her at this point
If you pay attention to her in the final episode of Bocchi the Rock they even animated her keeping time with her foot, even though she's way in the background for only a second.
On Episode 12 of Bocchi The Rock, they actually animated the crash cymbal being stopped with her left hand.
I'm so glad this show has been getting attention, it's so freaking good
Talking about BTR if it not obvious
wasn't it top anime of the year?
@@qwaffled idk i'm just glad a show I enjoy is popular

the most overused comment ever
@@duston1649 and?
I love this
I was VERY worry when I see Nijika (the drummer from Bocchi The Rock) on the thumbnail. Good thing she passed.
That was one of a rare one where the drummer animation is all accurate _when_ it is shown on the screen. Not a lot but definitely all accurate from what I saw for all 12 episodes.
I'm generally amazed by every instrument in the BanG Dream anime, but Masuki (MASKING) drum solo in S3E1 hits different!
I'm waiting this comment! Masking is SS tier ❤
6:28
considering the actor is David Hasselhoff, and the show is called "Hoff Knows Talent," I'm pretty sure that's supposed to be David Hasselhoff
I’ve been rewatching Bocchi and it’s honestly even better than the first time I watched it
I seems to be one of those shows where the more you watch it, the more detail you see.
Hats off to the production crew fr
For Hop I think they might have motion captured just the sticks themselves. It's really smooth, unlike getting people who often occlude the tracker marks making them stiff and twitchy, the drumsticks are easier to get in constant view of the camera, and probably captured at a fairly good framerate. You'd then rig the sticks to drag the arms and body about, clean it up a bit when elbows bend the wrong way, and worry just about animating the head for the most part.
6:25 You dont know THE HOFF? Knight rider? Baywatch!? hooo boy... thats David the freaking Hasselhoff!
Just binge watched this series, I'm not a musician, tho I am an artist, but watching the animations that just didn't get it right I think I notice a pattern? Very often they seem to make the character hit way more drums and move around more than necessary for what is actually being played, and my theory is that they're trying to make the drummer seem more hype? Since a drummer playing more stuff and moving around more looks "cooler" than a drummer actually playing the rhythm in the song.
I started to notice this in the Scooby Doo one because the difference in movement from animation to actual song was so drastic.
The other way around also seems like a common thing in some of those, more complex drums being animated by something simple and repetitive even if that's not accurate, usually when it's a more background drummer.
Anyway! Super fun series to watch! I might not know anything about music and instruments but it's always so interesting and cool to watch stuff like this! Just wanted to put my thoughts out hahah
yeah it strikes me that they're trying to capture the "vibes" of the drums (especially when they're super hectic) even if it's not technically accurate
6:23 "I'm guessing this guy..."
THIS GUY?
THIS GUY IS DAVID FREAKIN HASSELHOFF!!!
🤦♂️
NEVER JUDGE A DRUMMER BY HIS IQ
For the rabbit on HOP, they could've gotten motion capture by having a real drummer playing a giant drumset.
Surprised that HOP got an S considering not only did the rabbit never hit the kick at any point (including the flyover that clearly showed him not hitting it), he was not even physically tall enough to hit it. Granted that it's movie magic and highly accurate to the sound otherwise, I would've thought that would've made it solidly A tier.
I think that was what the original comment meant when it said there was a glaring problem.
FINALLY ANOTHER EPISODE!!!
awesome video as always 🤟
Chert's drumming in Outer Wilds is animated pretty well
Yep! It's pretty sad that the DLC extra musician didn't get the same attention to detail as the original ones...
@@bacicinvatteneaca dang, i didn't pay attention to that. Such somberness tho 😥
Sup, famous comment.

By the fourth time he said, "We all know what time it is now," I got the picture and I was like, oh, I am so subscribed. He explains everything in threes and HE'S REALLY FREAKING GOOD AT IT. I just watched 4 videos and got education that expanded my brain. This is good
watching you play Master of Puppets is my favorite moment of this channel... so far ;)
you even got the St. Anger snare in honor of Lars
8:32 What do you mean? That's exactly how Ulrich always played his parts.
Yeah, anime is the only place I've seen multiple seperate instances of actually referenced playing for their musical animation.
I remember the first time I watched that Guitar Solo for "God Knows" in Haruhi Suzumiya, my mind was blown.
I believe that's an audition for k-on (more likely it was a internal pre-test for k-on)
6:23 lmao that's David Hasselhoff...
First; I wanna see ya check out interstellar 5555 and Given
Second, Some simplified animation stuffs
Rotoscoping: drawing or tracking elements over top of 2d footage (a scanner darkly is a prominent example)
Motion tracking is having a bunch of data points on an actor and capturing that data, then transferring it to a rigged asset (think like a digital puppet)
As long as your control and your rig has the same number of objects tracked/objects to apply those tracks to you can mocap anything down to very small detail. You can also scale stretch and tweak things. That's how Benedict Cumberbatch was a giant mocapped dragon
I never knew that 2 of my favorite genre's in a video would be so good
they made the animation in bochi the rock REALLY good. considering that they had to adjust to the FPS of the animation.
You should do across the spiderverse in the next episode it has a really colorful drumming sequence
Watched this video today, went to see this movie tonight, came back to suggest it. Unfortunately, I don’t know if he’ll be able to do it because there weren’t a ton of long shots her actually drumming, just a lot of quick cuts. I’ll second this rec, though.
I mean they gave her jazz grip so its probably real, too choppy to really see it tho
Ok I watched it multiple times as a drummer I hate to say this but the drumming scene in the spider man was done kinda poorly
YES PLEASE TRANSCRIBE IT I WANT TO PLAY IT SO BAD
OKAY MY TAKE IS. They animated the drums to be true to the "spirit" of what was played? instead of actually playing accurately. Since gwen was animated at a slow-enough framerate that it was out of sync with the music, it had to have meant animating her accurately wouldn't look as nice and !flashy! as how her drumming sounds. I saw that as she was going ham on the cymbals the audio was moving through the toms.
And it's not like the animators didn't know how drums operated, they knew what they were doing. To have gwen play in traditional grip, to have every other frame of the movie apart from her drumming to be handled with the utmost care over three years, and then blame the animators not knowing how to animate drums is ludicrous to me.
So I think they made her drumming LOOK more flashy and impressive so that a. it stayed true to the emotions gwen was feeling during the sequence, b. so that people who didn't play drums would understand her emotions at a quick glance, and c. animating her accurately would put her out of sync with the audio and it would be incongruent with the already established style of the film, (on variable frame rates).
"covered behind people most of the time" sounds about right!! very accurate !!
Discovered this thanks to some friends, but there’s one drumming bit in Season 1, Episode 47 of Bluey. There’s also a small bit in S1 E3, but it’s not on a drum kit
I am an animator and also a musician. I never had the opportunity to animate a drum scene and I'm not sure if that's a good thing since animating is hard work and the deadlines are not kind, hence the ones with inaccurate animation either being animated by non-musicians or no more time.
Thanks EMC
Punk-o-matic is probably my favourite flash game of all time, glad to see it featured!
seeing eric play master of puppets was quite possibly my dream come true. 😎
Once again, Nijika is the best.
bro, we love this series
Smooth musical animations always make me feel a certain way, especially rotoscoped ones.
I commented this before, but you should check out the sacred 2 song from a quest that was done by Blind Guardian. It is motion captured and done really well. Probably one of the best I've seen and the game was made in 2008. Great content as always, keep up the good work.
The "Pete the Cat" one looks like it would've been easier to animate if they had done it correctly 😅 minus the fill
extrañaba esta serie ❤

I love the old punk o matic flash games hahaha i had a lot of fun with it as a kid.
Great video 👍🔝
5:13 Yo, this reminds me a lot of the intro to "Fight Against a Somewhat Stronger Monster" from Super Mario RPG
Sees David Hasselhoff
"this guy" haha
Nijika passed the vibe check
6:11 that fill was sick!!
new emc let’s go
The B in Mighty B stands for black midi
given has a pretty good drum animation too (mainly during their song on the penultimate episode)
everything is animated perfectly always
Punk O Matic is such a throwback. I loved that game as kid.
But it has bad words
@@Zygzak-vj4ic The horror!
New to the channel so not sure if you did the song Tree Critter from the movie Hoodwinked, but it is the most accurate animation of drums I've seen. Kind of ironic that movie gets knocked for its animation.
i love this.
eric just blowing by AGT lore with missing David Hasselhoff as the OG judge
Please do somebody give me a grade from Phineas and Ferb
Here's one I haven't seen you do you yet. Episode 12 of the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi (2006) has a "live band" segment where the on screen instrument play is quite good by my uneducated eye.
I recommend the drumming from Hibike Euphonium. An anime about a concert band but at some points they play drums.
A dagger to my childhood's heart - that wasn't Punk-o-Matic 2! You should find POM2! It has like 20x the amount of drum parts.
You could try looking up Piemation and Scratch21's cover of AC/DC's "big b*lls". Riley (another rabbit) does a pretty nice job on her drumming and the song and animation are both quite good. Gotta feel for the guy in the sound booth. (A place I've been for many, many hours...:) This is a fun series, thanks for sharing! stu
Amazingg!!
Did you just call THE HOFF, that guy?
In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, after you beat the main story a band shows up in town who basically act as a jukebox of the game's music, but I noticed that (at least for the main theme) the drummer plays on beat and switches drums at seemingly appropriate times, and I wondered if you'd investigate.
please investigate this!
I’m just now noticing, but I think he always says “get ready kids… for the WAPP” 😂😂😂
somehow the "What was actually played" of that second clip just made me think of Ghetsis' theme
I think it could be interesting to look at Marcy's drumming from amphibia playing No big deal.
"i guess that's supposed to be like Simon Cowell?"
Literally David Hasselhoff
My suggestion: Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya episode 26!
The God Knows sequence.
Definitely would love to see the beginning of "Rehabklok" where Pickles is hanging for dear life onto the side of a flying drumkit, and the drumbeat is still playing.
How about the Haruhi Suzumiya songs God Knows and Lost my Music from Episode 12?
Can you do Madagascar, please? It's quite impressive. Nice video btw!
You don’t know David Hasselhoff? Thanks for making me feel old…
Can you make a video on Jackson state or hbcu Drumlines
I'm not currently planning to animate drums.but this is definitely making me care should I do that haha
HITMAN (2016) has a drum kit that is played as a possible lead to seclude a target.
you should do scenes from the anime "beck mongolian chop squad" theres definitely a LOT of scenes to pick from
IDK if you're taking request for next episode, or if there will be a next episode, buti'm surprised Josie and the Pussycats hasn't been brought up, granted it's probably terrible, I know there is the Theme Song, which was the Intro/Outro, and there is Cartoon Network Groovies Muscial Evolution, I know there was an actual band that did the music for the cartoon and their music played over some of the action scenes in the show, and I beleieve there are some scenes of the cartoon band performing in the show itself, I don't think any full songs, just like a little bit here and there, IDK.
You HAVE to do spiderman across the spiderverse
idk if hes done agent 47 from hitan yet but id love to see! both w a drumset and w his bongos would be fun :D
I'd love to see you include Animusic's Drum Machine.
He already did it. Watch episode 4!
Spiderverse had a great drum scene
I don't know if anyone already suggested this one but the 1st ep of Yuki Yuna is a hero s3 has a really well animated drumming scene right at the beggining of ep 1
You know it's gonna be bad when the drums are just the kick and two toms
Do the festival episode of the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya episode 12! The songs god knows and lost my music. And a short drum solo.
an you do Shellbeat from my singing monsters on water island?
What about that Drumming Scene at the End of Shrek!
Their’s also a Drumming Scene in Spiderman Across the SpiderVerse
Drum go boom
Eric you should do a video where you take high school field show music, rate it and make it harder and more fun to play
great idea, i have some really boring tenor music that i gotta play and would definitely appreciate it being made more interesting
Punk-o-Matic 2 has kick drum animation and some Toms as well. Check it out! There's incredible accuracy! Drummer's approval
8:45 bro got that st anger snare
I was surprised K-On!'s Ritsu was in C tier until I saw which clip you watched 😄 I'd definitely put it up for a rerun with a clip of them actually playing e.g. Fuwa Fuwa Time.
Spiderman Across the Spider verse! The intro when Gwen stacey was playing!
Hey, Idk if you've done it yet but Code Lyoko has drum animations in episode 2! I think they're pretty on point
I got another one for you: the astronaut/drummer in Dr Stone. Dudes drumming a beat long before any drums play in the soundtrack.
twas actualy very interessting
I think there was in bubblegum crisis nice drum scene
I think the not just one but *two* floor toms _behind_ the regular toms and _next to_ the bass drum along with the two snare drums and the cowbell facing directly away from the seat is actually the funniest thing I've ever seen in a Looney Tunes cartoon.
Oh, and neither of his feet are moving.
you should either do animal from the muppets or the drummer swampy from the band in phineas and ferb love handel
I am the only person watching who will say great video AFTER watching it so yeah keep it up :)
I would love for you to take a look at Girls Dead Monster scenes in the anime Angle Beats!
