I never think Marc is Freddie, but Gary had tricked my ears many times.
Marc sounds more like a show choir singer. He lacks Freddie's rasp and vibrato. His phrasing is different.
Marc is a very exceptional vocalist, and I'd love to have to have him in a band that did Queen... But also did Styx, Yes, triumph, journey, Kansas, and maybe Air Supply.
Gary is my EASY choice for a Queen tribute band

Gary seems more "real" since he does mostly the live versions of the vocal lines. Although he is capable of doing songs like "spread your wings" from the studio version. Marc sometimes feels almost unreal, because Mr. Mercury seldomly nailed the high notes that consistently live

I thought that Marc was the only that had that kind of gift, but listening to Gary singing was just wow, he has an uncanny resemble with Freddie's voice, specially in his mid to late 80's live performances. I noticed a change on the pitches they use in the songs, it seems Marc feels more comfortable tuning higher. Marc's approach is more like 70s romantic, so I'm agree with the one who said Marc is 70s and Gary 80s. However Marc has a strong physical resemblance, this is a fantastic comparison, it's a win/win (for US Queen's fans!)

  • @papabearM3
    @papabearM3 5 лет назад +57

Simple. It is always Marc for one simple reason. His pitch and overall technique is better, esp. vibrato. Gary is amazing for an amateur act. In the world of Freddie impersonators Gary takes the trophy. Martel is not impersonating, just a sound-a-like. But... what a pro he is!! Marc’s technique and the quality of sound and tone and pitch are astounding! And he has all sides of Freddie, the soft, the rough, the cocky, the effeminate... naturally!!! Marc definitely.

Martel not impersonating?? Search on youtube for 'The many voices of Marc Martel' !! It is (or was ) his hobby!! Just like mine. He also does a Pavarotti. He just worked out his Freddie impersonation more when he was noticed and a lot of people thought he was a Freddie sound alike.
The guy has a good voice, but any diehard Queen(like me, from 1986 on) can hear the difference in half a second. Same with Gary by the way.
Martel has improved on his Freddie sound the last couple of years, yet I still have a slight preference for Gary Mullen.

    1-
    Marc - 70s Freddie
    Gary - 80s Freddie
    2-
I do think if you really want to hear Freddie's voice, you should try to record both of them and combine the 2 tracks into an audio "morphing effect". Marc lacks that micro/tiny rapsy voice Gary uses naturally. And Gary lacks the straight "classical" vocal Marc gets so easily.
Both of them are vocal twins. They are amazing.

Gary has the Freddie "gravel/grit" in his voice that makes it so deliciously rich and full. Like the previous comments, it's studio version vs live version. However... Gary's vocals touched my heart like Freddie did.

Marc does make changes to his voice to sound more like Freddie. Wo’s voice is Gary using? 😂
"...I have always been a natural mimic. I just loved imitating the voices that I enjoyed listening to .... George Michael, Freddie Mercury, Jeff Buckley, Bono ..... I would listen closely trying to get the vocal tone just right .... and I would do that until I felt like I could do a believable impression....."----Marc Martel
Is that your natural singing voice? Or do you mimic others? QE
I’m definitely a mimic naturally but then there are definitely a few other singers I can do fairly well but even when I’m not trying to mimic Freddie Mercury, people always tell me, people at my shows or come see our band [say that] I sound like Freddie Mercury. Even when I’m trying specifically not to sound like him I still get it. [I use] mostly my normal voice but I put it on a little bit when I want to try to sound exactly like him.

If you think Marc is the better impersonator that's fine, but all of you people who are bashing Gary as a vocalist just because you prefer Marc are absurd!
Gary has a fantastic voice: It's rich, powerful, with great sustain, and an incredible vibrato. I mean just listen to 0:43 and on. He hits the vast majority of his high notes in pure chest voice and still has a fantastic range, unlike you people keep suggesting for some reason.
For example: Listen to this "The Show Must Go" on and hear im hit *all the notes* up to a C#5 in pure chest! ( Btw, Marc would be using his mixed voice for this)
    ruclips.net/video/OqHZsPYKJ7g/видео.html
That's honestly an insane vocal performance and there are so many more of him out there. So prefer Marc for Freddie all you want, but stop saying Gary is a bad vocalist, because he's absolutely really not!

I can definitely tell which one is which and - I'm not going to lie - I identify them by asking myself "who is the one I can't tell apart from the original?". And that's Gary. Marc does a splendid job, and he approaches Freddie's tone super closely albeit, as surprising as I find it myself, in a manner different from Gary's. In head voice, Marc reaches perfection. Finally, let's not forget that in the movie, there is no telling when Freddie is singing and when it's Marc.
I'll admit for the sake of honesty that I've been following Gary for years, saw him live too, at a time when he didn't seem to know he had to measure his vocal efforts in order to last in the business.
In any case, those are two splendid singers in their own right. There is no auto-tune here, just beautiful voices and an amazing amount of work, with a huge attention to details in the mannerism of their model. Kudos to both of you.

They're both great.I saw Gary Mullen when he won Starts in their eyes as Freddie, and it was awe inspiring to see. Gary is really geared toward the 'Live Freddie Performances' form the Live Magic era. Some would day that was when he was at his best, I saw Freddie sing with Queen at Knebworth in 86, and for me, what you get with Gary is as close as you'll ever get to live Freddie, whereas Marc Martel, he is pure genius. His performance encapsulates the Freddie we hear on the vinyl studio albums. Marc can deliver the ballad and bring you to tears, Gary will give you a live version that will make you think you are watching & listening to the real deal. Either way. I love them both, they're great for new Queen fans post Freddie's death, to get a sense of what we had when he was alive. Now I know Queen have been touring with Adam Lambert, I've seen him with them. I'm glad they went for a great singer and not an impersonator. Adam brings a whole new feel to the music. I love it.
