This run was completed on 10/9/2010 at 12:09AM EST.
For some reason, I finish beat 'em ups rather quick. Started on this to run it for the marathon and became a full blown project. Started to work on this on 9/12/2010.
SDA is my home. Thank you for keeping this site alive.
HUGE thanks to Humorisk. His segmented run and his "Abobo Clinch" were SUPER helpful. Humorisk, thank you again.
Another thanks to my Ustream channel lurkers and active people on there. JH10, kareshi, metalStriker, sting, Paulygon104, Something915, SRKfunkdoc, stonepawfox, Teknosys, Tiki, Zerst, Ustreamer-10715, Ustreamwe-71109 were all in my stream when the run was completed. Thanks again to kareshi and Tiki for keeping me motivated.
Now for the good/bad/tec stuff about the run. I consider each "thumb" or area to be the next part of each mission. So it will seem like there are more stages than what there really is just reading this. Also something to note, I am STARVING for experience for the entire run. So you will see many enemies be hit more than needed to be killed. This is my experience farming. If all goes well, I will get the Elbow during the final Abobo fight. It is needed for the Chins and the rest of the fights.
1-1: Everything went perfect. They don't like to stack and it is a second or second and a half of a time killer.
1-2: Could have been a bit cleaner. But getting this to go well sucks. I think I reset here more than any other place.
1-3: Here is my biggest pet peeve with this game, they RUN AWAY FROM ME. I hate this. Because of this, I lost a second or so.
1-4: I am very happy with this. everything went as planned.
1-5: And again, all went well.
2-1: This was a bit sloppy, but I was able to recover it well to not lose too much time.
2-2: No dud, I am happy. A no damage dynamite kills so many runs. I hate it.
2-3: Ok... That was clearly ugly. That was the first time that has happened too. Weird.
2-4: And Chin went well. I need him to throw a punch so i can "push" him like that. But sometimes he will throw kicks and waist time and it is a real pain because the first 2 stages are the toughest.
3-1: I really with they would not get jump kick happy on me so much... They ruin a bunch of runs because of it.
3-2: Getting the Chin on the proper side was a pain this time. But not too bad...
3-3: Sometimes, but really rare, the guy will start to move before I jump the gap, then as soon as I stand up, I get knifed. This went good though.
3-4: This part went really well too.
3-5: All that time lost, and I get all, if not more, back here on the Abobo's. So hard to get them stacked like this. I will go ahead and say I got lucky.
3-6: Stupid headbutt/shoulder attack... I would have got hit anyway. But that part went really well. Moving platforms went well too. I miss counted on the last Chin. But still had a good fight with the two.
3-7: This part if the only part of my run that is "winged." It never goes the same way twice for me, and they LOVE to be jump kick happy. I give myself a set amount of time to move on, or its a reset. I do have a general plan, but as said before, never happens.
3-8: Ugh the rocks. Sometimes you can get lucky and they wont bother you at all. First "Hulk" went perfect. second one wanted to be a bit of a but head.
3-9: This went perfect. no complaints.
4-1: SO lucky with the troll wall. Chins went perfect.
4-2: A few mistakes here, but nothing all too bad.
4-3: That first William is a pain. he can really mess a run up bad. Also note that waiting like I did with the plat form did not lose me any time. And I can get a bit more experience as well.
4-4: Could have been a bit better, but still rather well.
4-5: A few things went wrong, but still good. No spoilers here.
I also include the into song at the end here because the music in this game is AWESOME!!!!!
Overall a great run. At least that is what I think. This run can be improved, but luck is needed for it. Again, thanks too all who helped me with this run. And as always, if you wanna give this game a go, I am more than willing to help you out with it. GL ALL!!! - Игры
You just absolutely slaughtered one of the hardest games on NES. Congrats to you
Flashpoint922 the arcade version is easier
Actually there were just a couple mechanics to figure out and 90% of the game became much more manageable. Like literally walking into the bigger enemies when they get up from their first fall, and then punch-punch-kick-looping kick inside their counterattack envelope, which makes them completely submitted to a guaranteed kill. And the fact that you have to spend the first two stages exclusively punching to gain experience and new moves. The only really tricky part will forever remain the last corridor to the final arena and its darn tricky walls. This one needs sheer luck AND skills all the way.
@Tom Caine my thoughts exactly. Lktterally took me YEARS (essentially playing on summers through 2000-2002) long after the NES was gone to finally beat Jackio ONCE :-D Haven't beat every Megaman yet, I'm afraid i'll go Everdrive and Savestates before bosses for these ones though, can't afford getting toast back to a level start on every fail, been there, done that but at 34 that's enough lol ;-)
Dude, it's not that hard?? I did this on a regular basis as a kid.
Ive never seen past lvl 3
Played this game as a kid, but never beet it. Once I decided it speedrun it, it took me 1 month to produce this. It really is not that hard.
I agree, nice strats, I think it’s actually easier to speedrun than to play normal and power up.
@@BLAZENYCBLACKOPS is not easier to speedrun is just becasue you are more focus in to beat it fast instead saving your life poitns to survive. That way you tend to risk more while normal play you are more with fear about to get killed. And you feel the game a lot more hard than it is. and this is not something that just happend in videogames. In sports, playing a instrument, bussiness and almost everything in life that you have some experience about.
Wow you made that look easy! My brothers an I loved this game as kids. Mom banned us from the versus mode when she saw us throwing knives at each other ha
Joga Dom lol, good memories
My mom hated this game and got mad when my borther and me started fighting over it and wanted it gone when she learned of the numchaucks in the VS mode
Why?
The versus mode took up hours of my time as a kid.
I used to make it look this easy when I was a kid!
Good run, this game still holds up as one of the best games made for the original NES system. It's still as much fun to play now as it was when I was a kid.
Oh my god, that Chin strategy on Level 2 is awesome! Me and my brother always did the ladder trick, I thought that's what you were gunna do and I was surprised.
Great run man, I fucking love this game. More than the arcade version and Double Dragon 2.
Thank you
Props to anyone who beat this first Double Dragon! Cheers!
I used to rock this game back in my day. I should master it again.and put up my on speedrun. Great play.
This game made me prematurely bald ad a child, it was so hard 😋
When Abobo falls on the ground, he looks like he's sucking his thumb.
I thought i was the only one. He looks like a giant baby.
@@Jono1874 I mean, if you have that large of muscles and are basiclly look like the hulk, and spent so much time training to that degree of strength, but then got your butt kicked that easily by a man 1% your size, you would wanna suck your thumb too, as your entire existance would have no meaning
My brother and I said the same thing as kids😂😂😂
2019 the nostalgia is simply epic till this day! Smh wish i was a kid again.
Wow, that elbow technique on the final boss is genius! Never thought to do that! Looks like I have a new strat against the final boss now, always struggle against him due to his high health and the onslaught you have to face before him.
Growing up, I could sometimes kill the gunner, but never stood a chance against Jimmy. After I started to research the game to speedrun it, then I finally beat the game for the first time.
@@heidmand Nice. Lol yeah, I find the gunner to be much more difficult than Jimmy, since he does so much more damage to you with the gun. Jimmy is honestly kind of a breeze since he hardly does any damage to you, specially with that kick, kick, elbow strat. That makes him pretty easy. It's just a matter of getting to him tho with more than just a few bars of health left.
Awesome run! And thinking back on this game for 1987-88, it's amazing for NES... a 3D side-scroller, experience and a level-up system with new combat moves, 5+ weapons, jumping puzzles and a iconic music score. I wonder where Billy and Marion are today, almost 27 years later...
They are in a sequel that a lot of people criticized
Nuk, that spinning kick is no damn good. It's a powerful move, but the delay for contact means that you can be hit before you hit them. Interestingly, Jimmy has the same problem with his spinning kick.
At 8:15, Abobo's like "Fuck that. I ain't climbing that just to get a knife lodged into my neck and knocked back down. I'ma have a smoke and get some lunch instead! After all, I have my own 'Big Adventure' to complete still!"
I can't even get past the 2 Abobos on mission 3 :( I arrive there with 2-3 lives, and they just slaughter me everytime. Good job man
I hate them too lol. It's really the point of no passing for me, I think I beat them like twice in my fucking life lol
I hate the ones that comes out of the walls they kick my ass everytime I get to that part
Me too, it's this place I can't do :(
Bimmy Lee never looked so dangerous!
Its incredible how 21 years ago I played this game, and until now I learned that you could punch the bad guys when thrown on the ground, Just memories. 9:43
Late to the party, but, good job, dude! I beat this game once as a kid and it was an achievement that only use dorks can carry with us :D Take care.
Thank you. The party is forever ongoing. You can't be late so long as you show up. 😉
Those two giant bald guys tearing out of the cliff face scared the crap out of me as a kid
So true
Abobo has that effect on people, lol. His twins with hair in Double Dragon ll are even more frightening.
Same
Those brick walls in the beginning of mission 4... frustration beyond belief.
Yooooooo! That River City Ransom Track @9:32. Wow! Shared music indeed.
Very good accuracy. The last arena was a bit hard if we don't know the tricks (where to place). I finished this game on my 3DS with retroarch. Very good OST by the way.
Thank you
I beat all the sequels to double dragon. But I couldn't beat this one. Crazy.
I still have not beaten DDIII... I should do that at some point...
Hundreds of hours played to master a play through in under 13 minutes. Lol well done!
Iconic music!
The old double dragon and ninja gainden are the most epic games I ever played in my life and I love thrm now at 18 y old
that sound when kicking someone "bach bach bach bach!"
Awesome job. I hope youtube pays you for this.
This game is practically important
I just bought this game for $14 bucks at Walmart. Plug and play and the joy stick is way too bulky and it doesn't work but the game is golden. I love double dragon 4 life bro.
Classic games never get old
Amazing😂😂I could go through only one time in my childhood😢😢😢
Once is still an achievement. Congrats to you.
4:12 He picked the wrong time to turn around
Elbow is The second strongest attack. The strongest attack is the spinning jump kick I believe. If not then the elbow.
The mount takes too much time. I can knock down one person and start on the second allowing enemies to spawn faster. I only use it on the last guy in an area if I get bad rng so I dont have to wait for them to get up. Chin's and the last 2 bosses will push you off if you attempt to mount unless they are at low health.
You can force Chins and the final bosses back up faster by acting like you are going to kneel on them while they’re down, but quickly press Up before they have a chance to throw you. Just be careful if you ever do this in the caves though, as a hit from another Chin during this transition can force a glitch which causes you to fall off the screen to your death.
Great run! Did you play as *Bimmy* or *Jimmy* ?
Bangin soundtrack. U killed it dude.
Yes and thank you 👍
I never thought to use that strat on the final boss. U made it look easy.
@@dwaynegreene152 it is mostly proper spacing and timing the kick so that he stands up into the kick as the kick hit box kinda stays out for a while. Just keeping him from attacking is the real goal because he is so aggressive.
You make it look so easy
Practice and understanding, you can do it as well
Good time for no death warps sure it's not wr but this is amazing
I saw someone use my strats and got a better time with being a bit cleaner. I believe it is possible to still improve with the same strats. The 2 deaths warps do save a bit though.
@@heidmand Still though this is amazing
Awesome speed run! I know it's a speed run, so I can look by all the cheap kills. Great video!!!
The kick at 7:52 was epic as fuck....
Excellent run! I've never seen THAT before!!!
Great job this game is still one of the gratis games of all the
It is rather good
The OST is so god-like
Is it just me or is the original the best of the entire series? I mean the second one did not have the music, and I felt that the level design and everything is better in the original. Even super double dragon did not have the leveling up system. The only thing the sequel had that was really good was the knee
2 and 3 were good but not on the same level. Super is awesome in my eyes but still a bit lacking. I urge you to check out "double dragon neon" produced by Wayforward. It might be the best double dragon game.
Amazing run, Heidman! Great job. ;)
This video deserves more thumps up
Turbotef thanks, im impressed this is still standing as the current fastest run
9:57 I love this track:D
Awesome video, thank you. Looking for the fence trick where you beat the invisible and undying enemy repeatedly with a bat to earn points and all moves.
3:00 wtf
I laughed when I saw this .
Right lol
You can also just go back down the ladders until he despawns and you'll beat the level. His method is faster though.
@@IshikawaGoemon that one I know
At the end the bed was right there, use it Billy hahaha
Billy knows how to kick ass, but not so good with the ladies
@@heidmand exactly
Takes me an hour to beat the forest level alone lol
Back in the day... It was an obnoxiously long level
Fantastico here. Did you know that there is a glitch in this game. Unlimited free men. one guy holds the green guy by the elevator while the other guy keeps whipping him. timer stands still. high score forever.
Sick speedrun
Wow! Haven't watched the gameplay yet but I do know I suck at itXD
Good job:)
Yes, he makes 2 guest appearances in this game. Back to back.
Thank you.
Awesome, how you took out Chin in Mission 2. I did the ladder trick to bypass him.
4:22 that's that Tune.
Very nice! Is there a trick to make you grab the enemies? It just seems to happen randomly when I play. Is there a trick to that?
4th heart gives both the hair pull and mount. When you hit an enemy you can get 2 different stun animations. One is short (single kick) and the other is noticeably longer (2 kicks). Walk towards the enemy durring the long stun animation and you will pull the hair. Knees to the head deal kick damage and the throw does 2 kicks worth of damage. Mount punches deal kick damage.
better than the arcade to me
Most definitely
Shit. You beat Machine Gun Tommy's ass. To this day, he's annoying as shit even though I've beaten the game.
He is rather rough because of his infinite gun combo.
David Heidman Jr lol. I know. You apparently need the right distance to get away with beating the crap outta him
you should've had your spin kick by the 3rd mission bro...good run!
Marcus I usually have my spin kick halfway through level two with no cheat.
8:12 "Oh fuck that, I ain't going up there"
9:44 River City Ransom final boss music? Or did that game copy this game?
AND I THOUGHT I WAS BEAST AT THIS SHIT. SO MANY YEARS OF AND STILL DON'T COMPARE TO THIS.
Sick run! I am beginning the process of learning this game. My best so far is 12:52. Where can I find Humorisk's segmented run and his "Abobo Clinch"? Any other resources would be great? I should ask about the grab technique. Does using a directional after a kick cause the grab? I see that it occurs on its own at times. What are the dynamics here? Thanks.
+DonkeyKongGenius forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/double_dragon_times.html
-This is where me and Humorisk were working and posting our updates.
-About the grab: The grab happens when you uses a left/right input then the enemy is in a "stunned" state, usually caused with kicks. The randomness you are taking about is the timing of your kicks vs the stun time per first and second kick. The animation time of your kick is equal to the first kick stun animation time frame. The second stun time is much longer making it much easier to get. Your kick hurt box stays out as long as you are in the kick animation, so if you can get the enemy to walk into your kick animation while it is still lingering out, your animation ends and still have time to get the grab.
-Feel free to ask about anything else, I am more than willing to help.
+David Heidman Jr Thanks for the offer for help, I appreciate it. At this point I am only looking for a pb and will only grind out WR attempts if I am good enough. So with the kick and grab, are you saying that if I kick before they are within range but then move into my kick while it is still out then this will increase my chances of grabbing them. I noticed on the last part of mission 3 you are kicking Linda when they are further away and then again for the grab. I have yet to get the timing down for this. It seems that in this case you are kicking while they are already at the edge of your kicks ready to get hit. I have noticed, like in the case of Willy that if I space out where I stand before I kick it will automatically go into the grab, which is nice.
+DonkeyKongGenius It will increase you chances of grabbing on the first kick. second kick you will always grap.
+David Heidman Jr Increased to 12:36.85
I wonder if the first level of this game its the same as the first leven in Double Dragon 3.
Probably the same location since each game starts right outside their dojo, just imagined differently
best game i played when i was a kid!!
I would never have had enough money to do that on the arcade (which must of been more difficult) 😬
Arcade port is a different beast
@@heidmand I tried hard & gave up my chance of a Porsche 911 to complete it, I failed but I'm happy with the bus .. yeah 😬👍
You forgot to mention that you used a turbo control.
Lol, my arm is my turbo
@@heidmand your arm or your finger? lol
@@VinnyManny i actually use my tricep and forearm to mash, my hand and fingers dont do any work.
couldnt beat this before... when i saw some runs and it becomes easy... thanks for all the help... wow... i use emulator... 😂
@heidmand Ya, I liked the way you finished off the machine gun guy, just perfect timing and distance control. Hes the only hard part along with the pillars that comes out at the beggining of mission 4, otherwise this game isnt so hard like many ppl thought.
Awesome vid!
Ya, most were. But the Chin kill at the end of stage 2 may be cheep, but stylish I think.
I always wondered if it was on two-player who would be the final boss?
If Jimmy's the final boss, than who would be the final boss on 2 player mode?
Both 1p and 2p play Billy, so regardless the final boss will be Bimmy... I mean Jimmy
I died at the Mission 2 boss xD
WOW! That was nuts!
One way you could have sped this up a bit, farm out enough points to get the back elbow, it one-shots most foes and three-shots abobos. It doesn't even take very long to get enough points for it, otherwise solid run.
Devil Eye I found that farming points for the elbow early takes longer tgsn what I did. I chose to farm a bit on almost every enemy a small amount (I do more damage than necessary to finish off an enemy) and get the elbow right at the final gauntlet. In this run I was a bit lower on points and got it a bit later than planned. If a new point route is created I don't mind testing them out.
To farm out elbows, you have to punch every enemy don't use kicks that much
The game is fairly easy. The wall on stage 4 is make or break for me. I cruise through the first 3 levels, sometimes the wall ruins me. Not getting the spin kick is key as well. Why does the game give you a move that literally everyone ducks under?
Had to make the game hard is some way. But yes the game is rather easy once you understand the mechanics
I'm only watching the end of level2, but all I have to say to myself is - 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏻🤦♀️
11:45 one of the best songs from this game, one with some of the best music on the NES
Oh and great run
Thank you.
Elegant! (even with the few mistakes) :D
Thank you
it was very hard for me when i was a child.
Damn I always got stuck at mission 3 lol
dawn it i was desperate on seeing his spinning kick i never seen it before on the first one
3:03 lol!
Lol! Does he kills everyone with Judas Effect??))
Thank you
well played.
What is the most damaging attack, the elbow? And, just wondering why you didn't sit on the fallen to punch them more often?
work, work, work... (markarth guard of skyim)
wow this guy did the same moves i did, kick kick elbow! best 3 hit combo lol
11:56 fucking delicious!!
Double Dragon 2 is the best one
No I think they go on this order the best one is the original. The second best one I would say is Battletoads in double Dragon and I really like the second one as well
best of BEST PLAYER !!!
Holy shit
3:00 wtf?
Maybe he was fighting Michael Jackson there doing the moonwalk
very nice run :)
I couldn't beat lvl 3
WOW. that was really impressive. you didn't even complete the levels hearts in the game. it must've taken you months or maybe YEARS to actually perfect this game as I have never mastered this game even after 15 so years.
2:45 lol
Loony toons Abominable Snowman " which way did he go George, which way did he go?"
