The Internet Speed Price War in Nepal
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 фев 2025
- There is a war going on right now in Nepal. Not with guns and bullets,
but with speed and price. Internet Service Providers or ISP are at war
to get new customers.
How? By announcing new and bigger packages but at the same rate as previous.
But how is this possible? And is it why our internet sucks these days?

Actually what you said about 1 Mbps = $5, is the international bandwidth price. In Nepal, about 90%+ bandwidth usage is from popular sites like RUclips, Facebook, and Tiktok. These popular sites have their cache servers installed in Nepal, so when users consume content from these sites they don't use the international bandwidth. The content they request is served locally through caching from NPIX. So, the pricing description you gave there actually doesn't make any sense.
If we think about it, only a few percentages of bandwidth are from international, you may ask senior network engineers from ISP for that.
So, ISPs spend money only on the maintenance of the cache servers and on their upgrades. That is the reason why CGNET why ok with easily bringing 120 Mbps at a such low price. So, you may be thinking why other ISPs didn't do this from the start. I don't know, maybe they were enjoying profits from all of this. CG on the other hand didn't go for the profit, as they wanted to expand their userbase.

As someone with network engineering background, I can add few more points regarding IPv6 adoption, which is a hot topic in the networking world..
Nepal is ahead of many countries in terms of IPv6 adoption too. The dual stack strategy used by the ISP(Vianet, Worldlink, etc) needs to be appreciated too. Not only the current scenario, but also the future circumstances are taken under consideration.

Do you even know how much do corporate houses influences government and Political party to have monopoly in the market?
Just think,he is just an individual.how much would he get threats and insults from these corporate houses, politicians for exposing their dark sides.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@jasminshrestha6573 Where is the dark side?
I dont see it. If you're talking about how ISPs were over charging us before CG came in or how they sell 100Mbps which is equivalent to 10 MBps, then you need to do some research on your own.
Most of the stuff he stated is open information. He's just restating the facts that were already there.
So yes, I dont see the courage. But the video is very well put together.
@@the.ent7tyYeah, There aren't much of DARK SIDE to isp providers as most information are publicly available, which many peolple aren't bother to research by theme self.... but he is talking about other things likes influence as well as it's aftermath cause by corrupte politics and corporates and what not, this channel deals with. "Knowledge is power", those who posses none are just a flock of sheep but having little to none or misinformation can cause harm to one self and others. we know that Many actively capitalize on it. This man has balls to make many controversial content 😂 which I respect.
This is one of the best channel I've ever come across.
Absolutely awesome demonstration.. loving this channel each day
Wow, good going man. The way you explained I Like.. Still, I am a bit confused n it also doesn't make any sense, when it comes to 1mbps for $5 it's too much. Bcz me being a content creator I used 5 to 10gb data per day... Ke yo saxxi ho ra.. 🙄🙄
But Keep it up... I feel proud when Nepali start making computer & Tech content...
Day by day this channel is giving vibes as like of "THINK SCHOOL" , a RUclips channel from India👏 Nepal strongly needs a channel like this, giving exact facts and details.

I was in Nepal for about 5 months working from home butwal. Had 50 mbps connection but it was not reliable at all. MS teams calls kept dropping every other minute. File transfer was alao very slow when connected to office vpn in india. returned back to Pune India, my home airtel 40 mbps plan works flawlessly. Gives consistent 50mbps speed. 4k content on tv, multiple home devices connected and not a single call drop in MS teams.
Nepal needs reliable 50 mbps internet connection and not 200 or 600 mbps connection.
Your 40 MBps in India is mega byte and Nepal’s 50 Mbps is mega bit which is only 6 mega byte compared to your 40 mega byte internet
@@Jellyjamjaylor no, it is mbps in mega bits only. Every where in the world, same mbps is used as a standard unit of measurement.

Pricing war is good for consumers. Until 2010, NTC had a huge monopoly with their ADSL literally everywhere outside Kathmandu because they owned the telephone wires and controlled end-to-end ADSL market (speed, pricing, artificial shortage of ADSL connections). The price in those days was around 1600/mo for 384Kbps. After Worldlink expanded their fiber optic market outside Kathmandu, only then did NTC reduce their ADSL cost and bumped up their ADSL speed to 2Mbps. They were also forced to offer fiber. Worldlink's service sucks when things go wrong but hey, at least they stirred the market outside Kathmandu for good and gave NTC a run for their money. Even if 200Mbps is shared 1:16 today, customers pay less compared to what they had to pay in 2010 for a measly 192Kbps. They also have options to move to another competitor. All-in-all good win for the consumers.

You miss a big point here. Company like Worldlink has installed big big CDN of google, Facebook, Netflix, TikTok and pubg. So 85% of the internet traffic is consumed on local proxy server.
So now ISP can buy lesser international bandwidth from this arrangement. I would say you have covered 60% of the current market issues.
Great brother. Yo are working hard and you deserve more subscriber. One from me.

25mbps nrs 981.59 monthly ( phone plus internet package), with free NTC-NTC calls upto 200 minute in this package
Fair usage policy: 30 GB/ day ( usually doesn't matter even if daily usage exceeds 30 GB) after which speed drops down to 5 mbps....
It might sound funny, but NTC's adsl was far more reliable overall even with just 8mbps speed for 2-3 average users.....

If you compare internet through fiber all over the world as shown in the video, Nepal has cheaper internet prices as compared to other Huge countries. But still people do find it expensive here as there various background cost which people are unaware of. There are multi core fibers which cost about Rs90 per meters that are initially placed to create a fiber network. These come through various server called OLTs and has a radius span of 20km. From them they still have to pull more multi core fibers whose rate maybe less than Rs 90 per meter. Then finally when a consumer is given a fiber connection through a single core fiber which costs around Rs 12 per meter and on average if in a crowded area they usually use upto 50 meters of fiber for a single customer and while on less crowded place (as per number of buildings) 100 meters is an average. Hence the cost is high per user. Also the pole tax which has recently increased by 6 times its previous value. And comes nagarpalikas who unannounced cut those multi core fibers and hence needs to be pulled right from the start. All these hidden costs is what makes internet prices go up. Oh also forgot about TSCs which is 13% of the advertised package.
Now about internet speed and issues, the internet package for home users are usually on sharing basis and hence with increase in users there will be slow browsing issue. Also with ISPs from big to local all use router at the end of fiber to provide wireless connection, the frequency they are working on is the same. So imagine you singing a song solo on a stage in front of a crowd, your voice gets heard all over the room. Now imagine you singing one song and the entire room singing different songs at the same time. Which sound would you hear?? Noise.. So yes there is noise in Wireless connection to as they too are waves, hence cause of interference. Now, ISPs to reduce noise and interference have brought about a router that supports 5Ghz of frequency, not to be mistaken with 5G LTE network, which is a common misconception these days. So if people are well known as to how the internet works and what causes it to fluctuate they would understand that internet has its own problems and solutions too.
As always very informative video
We Appreciate Your Effort 👍👍👍
That's not all , You should also mention about the different frequency and the difference in speeds through ethernet and wifi. i mean you can be a 200mbps subscription but your 2.4ghz router will never provide that speed & not just in Nepal but in the whole world internet is measured and marketed in Mbps not MBps. High number of overlapping signal on same wifi channel, distance can disrupt the speeds by a lot. people need to understand the equipment and the technology behind it as well.
Always love watching your video, can't wait for nextt onee, your videos are so muchh educational,ur a dhruv rathee of Nepal, keep it up lot's of love and all the best forr up coming
It was a great video the quality of information and how easily digestible it was, educating Nepal one video at a time.
