      Correlation vs causation perhaps? Someone looking back a lot is possibly much more likely to be out of gas and thus hoping they've already made enough of an effort to win whereas someone with something left in the tank is more likely to focus on squeezing out whatever they have left.

      Yes, you do look back. You are missing information, that the other person behind you has. Thats why race cars still have mirrors and intercoms telling them whats going on.

      I love the gutsy sprint. It's the constant looking back over his shoulder worrying about the field instead of keeping his focus forward and giving every ounce of energy he had to the finish line that took away his win. I'd have much more respect for him if he made his move, gave it his all, and got passed, but never once looked back and thought maybe I'll save some extra in case someone else wants to race. He doubted himself in a race where the only one he was really competing with was in his own shoes.

      this is the prob if someone is on your heels than he's conserving energy because you have full air resistance meanwhile he has much less. Cyclist do this. So if you're going for a last minute sprint you def don't want some guy right behind you and therefore spend less energy and then go full in the last 20 seconds.

      At the moment he decided to sprint he knew he had 500m and needed to sprint it all. 500m can be tough, the dude who takes him over afterwards saw his concern on who was behind and I believe started his sprint from that.

      I remember my first state cross country, my triathlete teacher said we just went for the day off. We all laughed and said no way, were here to race. One guy said He is going to win it! Ill never forget the start when they took off not at a jog but a full run. I came last but my classmate who said he would win, dropped out. What a bunch of machines.

But for some people it can be a handicap they become aware of too late and an entry for mental issues if working in a high peer pressure and high criticism type line of work.     When my son was about 11 years old he entered a Jaycee Relay Race. He’d never ran track before and didn’t know everybody wore shorts. He came in jeans, to everyone’s amusement. He ran the last leg for his team - and came away the fastest runner of the day, and made up considerable distance to win. This video made me think of that day. How I wish I had been able to see it, instead of only hear and read about it. I was a single mom and had to work. My son was an amazing athlete. ❤️

    When I saw the title of this video I wondered what race it was because I was in the crowd that day and it was amazing. The crowd just went nuts jumping up and down and cheering. You could see him coming. It was probably my most euphoric experience as a spectator. Awesome race.

      They do. They also train to pace themselves so they have just enough energy for that final sprint without reserving too much during the rest of the race. It’s a very fine balance.

    The most impressive part was how relaxed (and a bit perplexed) Docherty was when Gemmell unexpectedly starting kicking early! He just looked across as if to say "You're kicking already...!?!? No chance you'll sustain!" and then sure enough...Docherty comes blazing through as Gemmell fades!

      don't forget the crack cocaine. i'm sure they smoked a bunch right before the race to enhance their breathing right...... maybe they just really have good stamina , try HIIT training for jogging. you will be suprised after a few months what you can do if you have the right diet
