    2 full days of attempted repairs produce little or no results. I seem to break more things than I fix! Fun with screws, bolts, pulleys, belts, pumps, and a serpentine belt tensioner.

    I just went through pretty much all of this. Bought a boat that was “mechanic owned”. Ending up having to replace pretty much everything you did in this video plus the bellows and gaskets on the manifolds.

    I am in the exact same situation. I broke same bolt. Now pump is leaking through holes that are in the assembly so I guess I will need to replace pump. I cant disassemble the tensioner etc.
    Your video made me feel that I am not alone here. thanks for posting it.

      Sorry to hear that. Misery loves company I guess. Replacing the pump itself was actually easy once I solved the sheered bolt problem...

    As a fellow boater that does his own maintenance let me share my thoughts... I too can end up breaking things while trying to complete a fix. Anyway you look at it, it probably still costs way less than a pro AND you know it's done properly (eventually). Previous boats have been Mercs but wanted to leave that engineering behind me - so far very pleased with Volvo!

    You did good, you created some headaches for yourself with, how do I say this,.... technique? You need good tools and some tricks, those silver allen keys are soft metal...you need a proper set, so they don't strip. Also, you need to spray some PFBlaster on those cruddy bolts, I 've had similar problems I use a hollow tube as a breaker bar over allen keys, socket handles etc.....but don't be so hard on yourself, the screws, pulleys were all bad already....so they were on the way out. If a bolt or screw is not giving...stop, anything smaller than 1/4 inch dia could break in half, you need to spray it down with penetrant and wait an hour and try again. The problem with boats is salt water and corrosion....when you put stuff back put some quality anti-seize on it. Good Luck on the next project.....boats, they are headaches.

    On the bright side, changing the impeller on the volvo is way easier than on a mercury. Project finished or not, you desire a cold beer after all of that.

    • @eternitysshore
      @eternitysshore  2 года назад

      I’ve heard that yes. Actually just got that last screw off today with help from boating neighbor. Tomorrow I’ll figure out how to put the belt back on without a working tensioner. Any thoughts?

    • @JG-wr1sl
      @JG-wr1sl 2 года назад +1

      @@eternitysshore I'm not a pro but I would think if you can get the proper tension on the belt, you should be able to start up and check for leaks.

    • @JG-wr1sl

    Yep - I'm in process of rebuilding my raw water pump assembly (had to go to Lowes to buy a 3/8" drive 5/16" allen bit for my socket wrench. Also broke the same metal part of the tensioner - deciding whether to oreplace it now, or figure out how to use it without being able to turn it with the socket to put the new belt on. And...I'm waiting on a new circulation pump, which was probably the original problem where water was spraying all around my engine compartment....Good times.

    How you were using the socket on the end of the alley key. Use the box side of a larger wrench to create a longer lever to loosen the bolts. Also works to use the closed end side of a wrench to the open side of another wrench to make it longer.

    • @eternitysshore
      @eternitysshore  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. I actually just did that today with a friend of mine’s help and we got it out! But didn’t use the Allen key but instead I bought a set of extended Allen bits and used a socket wrench with it plus the open end of another a socket wrench.

    Enjoyed watching your video, reminded me of my trials and errors this summer with my caterpillars overheating. Get yourself a 12-in piece of metal pipe to use for leverage for breaking difficult bolts free. Oh regarding the heat, I almost passed out one day from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, get yourself one of those turbo fans to blow on you. We use it the rest of the summer just to keep cool in the cockpit.
    Interesting you have a diesel generator, was that factory?

    • @eternitysshore
      @eternitysshore  Год назад +1

      The metal pipe is clutch thanks. I’ll definitely get that. Fan is also a purchase on our list. The reason for the diesel generator goes way back to earliest videos. Bottom line: it was part of the agreement since they advertised with a generator but it never worked so they bought a brand new one which was great. We had the option of gas or diesel and on the advice from surveyor we chose diesel.
