I learned more in 3 minutes here than I did in the entire 2 hour video I watched before this one. Well done.

Really helpful, thank you! There seem to be so many ways to make use of GIMP, and you have just added some more techniques to my post-processing armoury!

Another great video mate, im not doing processing at the minute, as I'm concentrating on getting better images and then stacking them, one step at a time for me, but its great to know I can refer to your videos when I'm ready.

That's excellent 👍 have you been having problems getting nice frames?

@@AstroOnBudget No, not really mate, but I am paying attention to my polar aligning, making sure the dew heaters are on, getting the scope and mount ready, and paying attention to the framing of a target.
I've made so many small mistakes so far, that slowing down, paying attention to the details is the way I've found works for me.

This is so cool. The next thing is, when do you know if you come up with a great magazine quality astrophotography image? 😎 Thanks a lot.

I use Gimp For Stretching and Post Processing My Astrophptos. Sometimes I like to Use SirL for Stretching and Remove the Green Gradient and Dynamic Background Extraction and Then some Touch up editing In gimp!

Gimp opens up all my stacked files in black and white only and I have no clue why. I get no color in nebulas or any thing. When I open a file a window pops up that says "Load FITS File. Then below it says Replacement for unidentified pixels and gives a box that says Black or White. The black is checked. Then below that the box says "Pixel value scaling and there are two boxes. One says Automatic and the other says By DATAMIN/DATAMAX. The Automatic is already checked. Then it says Image Composing with two items. One says None and the other says NAXIS=3, NAXIS=2,...,4. Below that is Help or Open or Cancel. When I click open I get a black and white photo only.

What is your stacked file? Jpeg, tiff? And also what did stack the original images in and how many please

    • @AstroOnBudget

      Hey Rob,
Stacked file is usually .tiff format. I take a lot of photos (e.g. 300 second photos x 30) and then stack them using a software called Deep Sky stacker. Hope this helps :)?

@@AstroOnBudget cheers for that I only do milky way images which i use sequator to stack, but my editing process for all sky images is done in Canon's dpp4 and saved as jpeg before stacking. That stacked image then gets my foreground images added to it back in Canon dpp4, which then also gets saved as a finished jpeg.
