      @@WingWalker1 For a short period Ford had the upper hand. Chevy knew how to play NASCAR and the upper hand was soon returned to them. Several interviews with now long retired crew chiefs admit this. Also his pit crew was not quite as good on a consistant basis as the championship winning teams. That means loosing spots on cautions when you have a good car when leading or catching up. Mark lost a lot of races while in the pits.

    • @user-Dr.
      @user-Dr. 2 года назад +1

      When you say it's all changed, that's almost an understatement, if possible, I think the beginning of the end was when they allowed Toyota to buy in, knowing their powertrains were substandard, Ford had fallen behind in the engine wars, so NASCAR made the choice to make the Chevy LS package the standard engine, completely destroying the competitive spirit, at least to me and I'm a Chevy guy, kinda boring having Chevy win every race with no competition, yet other car companies taking credit, looks like the democrats are getting ready to make all auto racing illegal anyway, I've been racing my entire life, don't know what I would do if they take that away.

    I watched Mark Martin career from start to finish. One of the toughest, cleanest driver ever in the Cup series. It broke my heart when he lost his championship because a carb spacer wasn't welded to his manifold. Everyone knew he should have been the Champion that year. Earnhardt would only had 6 for not that dumb mistake from Mark's engine builder that race. He was the man and still is today.

    • @Hoghaw
      @Hoghaw 2 года назад +6

      AND….. Except for the 3 team, everyone agreed that the fact that the spacer wasn’t welded, did NOT improve the performance of the engine or the car. In fact, if it had been welded, and the seam between the two ground cleanly “probably” WOULD have improved engine performance. My opinion of course!

    Mark Martin was one of the most determined drivers. When he hurt his back two of the pit crew literally picked up Martin and threaded him through the driver window so he could race his car with a special seat. He is my hero because he could drive out front with ease if his car was prepared well. I thought he would win a championship but I guess the mileage caught up with him.

    • @Qwazier3
      @Qwazier3 2 года назад +8

      I remember seeing those races when they put him in the car. Mark should've won multiple championships but Roush didn't take getting a good speedy pit crew a priority. Gordon's crew was in the 12 seconds and pounding the competition with their help. I sat in bars watching races as the bar erupted during cautions with people screaming, pleading and begging Martin not to go into the pits because we all knew he'd lose 6 or more spots. So sad to see him be in the lead only to lose the race because he pitted.

    • @Hoghaw
      @Hoghaw 2 года назад +3

      Mark almost won the Championship the first year he drove for HMS! The following year was terrible. I wondered what happened. I knew Mark didn’t just forget how to drive over the off season. “Mr. Excitement” Jimmy Spencer spilled the beans. Jimmy Johnson’s Crew Chief Chad K. convinced Mr. Hendrick that he needed Mark’s Chassis guys particularly as well as all of the people responsible for setting up Mark’s car while in the shop. Mark got what was left over and his on-track performance suffered. The 48 team won a lot of Championships, but they got caught CHEATING a lot too! Anyway, that’s why his remaining years at HMS were only a shadow of his first season with that team. Chad K. was a dirty crew chief, in my opinion of course!

    Thanx for the memories Mark Martin, I seem to remember the "Folger's Ford".
    One race I remember more than any other, I think it was a "Busch" race or whatever they called that series back then, Martin had a lead near the end and the caution came out. Back then races ended under caution. All Martin had to do was ride around under caution for like 5 laps and he'd win the race. But no, with one lap to go, Martin pulled in the pits, and someone else came around and won the race. I'm sure Mark Martin remembers that one.
